20 Most Essential Matches (1982-2001)
World's Worst Man replied to KTID's topic in General Wrestling
The Steamboat-Savage match is now regarded by many as being overrated. People generally still think it's an excellent match, but the idea that it was some incredible MOTDC (or even MOTYC) seems to be shared by few and far between these days. -
20 Most Essential Matches (1982-2001)
World's Worst Man replied to KTID's topic in General Wrestling
It should go without saying that "best matches" lists are all opinion, as you can't factually prove that one is better than the other. So there's no point in debating "right and wrong", but people can certainly argue the merits of the matches. -
Is Kawada/Misawa still the standard?
World's Worst Man replied to JustJoe2k5's topic in General Wrestling
Otani vs. Samurai is a good choice. As are the two great Otani vs. Liger matches (3/17/96, 2/9/97). Liger vs. Samurai's TOSJ '92 finals, the best of the Sano-Liger series, Benoit-Sasuke J-Cup '94 final, Benooit-Guerrero BOSJ '96 semis, Benoit-Otani WCW CW title and Otani vs. Dragon from the J-Crown tournament would probably be the next tier. -
Is Kawada/Misawa still the standard?

I think it's becoming less recommended by people "in the know" as a starting point for newcomers to Japanese wrestling. That's mostly because the match is really their 3rd or 4th major singles match, and there's a lot of history in the match that a newcomer wouldn't get. I'd assume it's still highly regarded in a match quality sense, as I haven't read any convincing arguments that would make me question whether it really was one of the best matches ever. As for other matches that might be better, for a while I've thought the 6/9/95 tag match was better. That might be it though. As for lately, nothing has really come close since 1997. -
I'll say 1993, for Japan at least. AJW and AJPW in '93 were probably two of the best years a wrestling promotion's ever had. AJW was producing shows that occasionally had 2 or more MOTYCs on them. And this is coming from someone who doesn't throw around "MOTYCs" and snowflakes like crazy. AJPW was producing excellent matches almost weekly. Maybe not as much super high-end stuff as 94-95, but beyond that, there was a ton of good stuff in 1993. New Japan didn't have a super great year, but it was solid, as was usually the case with them. Typical high-end work from Liger, Samurai, Benoit, etc. As for 1997, that was probably the last great years New Japan and All Japan had. Things started really declining in 1998 (and in All Japan's case, one could see signs of decline even in 1997). It was probably the last year that the WWF/WWE was generally any good for match quality too, and the last year I believe they produced a solid MOTYC (Hart vs. Austin).

Typical good, but not great, New Japan match. I personally don't see a whole lot to get worked up about, as New Japan usually produces a great many matches in this range in a given year (their problem is that very, very little exceeds that). Aside from that, from the little I saw of Bernard in AJPW, it did appear he improved. I think a lot of that comes down to just not being in WWE anymore. I've seen it many times, a guy will leave WWE for Japan, or ROH, and all of the sudden their ring work improves leaps and bounds. Those enviroments are just more condusive to good in-ring wrestling, so it's somewhat natural for a guy to look better there. The only guys you probably wouldn't see that automatic improvement with, are a) guys so bad that they have no hope of ever improving (Singh), b) guys who've been with WWE for so long, that they'd wrestle that shitty style no matter where they went (Undertaker, Trips probably) or c) younger guys who've been specifically groomed by WWE (so someone like Orton I guess). As for the match itself, I found the pacing to be a little suspect early on, and the whole story surrounding Bernard's arm was completely overblown considering how much damage it had actually taken. I'd say Bernard is definitely not even close to being good, (then, I also don't throw around "good" a whole lot) but he's certainly servicable. Against someone of equal skill, they'd keep things passable, against someone better he can be dragged along to a good match, while still looking decent along the way (ie. not being completely carried). Calling him terrible at this point would be quite far from the truth I feel.

It means the new "ECW" will more or less be the same in the ring as the standard WWE product, just with more trashcans and road signs.
-
The main event was Nobuhiko Takada defeating Keiji Muto, with Antonio Inoki vs. Vader on the undercard. The 1995 January dome show ME was Shinya Hashimoto vs. Kensuke Sasaki, not Tenryu vs. Muto. Hashimoto beat Nobuhiko Takada in the main event to win the IWGP Title.

This new "ECW" sounds better every day. For the sake of bigger shows, they won't be able to outshine or out stunt the later matches. WWE style ECW! Awesome! "Well, you can't do this and this. Oh, and this is out. Certainly can't do that." The expense of adding another day of taping would make the venture a major money loser. WWE spends $500,000 per day of taping, and they wouldn't want to recreate the production values of ECW as they would be deemed not good enough. I love this one. "We're not going to present ECW the proper way, we're going to present it OUR~! way. And since OUR~! way is too expensive, we can't give ECW its own night of tapings."

Wrestling Events I've Attended - Part III
World's Worst Man commented on DrVenkman PhD's blog entry in DrVenkman's Blog
I went to my first indy show in 1999. I don't remember much about it. The only thing about the mid-card I can remember was some wrestler with a postal worker gimmick. Main event was Abdullah the Butcher vs. Terry Funk. Yea. The crowd chanted ECW when something HARDCORE happened, which I found odd. Kanyon was also there as a guest for some reason. Ok. -
I've always thought this as well. I'd say it's all about the pacing. And speaking of which, Hunter X Hunter is great. The manga has terrible art (at least, the very few issues I've seen), and the anime was never even given an ending. But it's a hell of a fun show nonetheless.
-
I was hoping he'd dump all over the wannabe-ECW fans who go to WWE shows and chant "ECW" all the time. I guess that would have been hitting a little too close to home.

Did people actually think this was a shoot?

If you liked it, try and see Kumo no Moku, Yakusoku no Basho aka Beyond the Clouds (or something like that). It was made by the same guy, and is another nice, one-off OAV/movie.

Dragonball, because the pacing of the anime was awful, while the manga flowed better. All things being equal, I like anime over manga, because anime is the better medium for getting across characters, comedy and drama. But in some cases, the anime version isn't done very well, usually because the story is bastardized for the worse. Time and money restraints are probably the biggest reason why. Then again, I don't really read manga, so I don't care how much of an anime is changed from its manga, as long as the anime is still good.

I say go for Microwave Cookery. -
Don't worry, it's obviously still 2002 where all Danielson did was psychology-rich, mat-based wrestling that only workrate fans really dug.

*waves to Cowboy Bebop* The only knock I can see against Eva is the terrible ending (and really, even the movie ending wasn't that good). Whereas the pimped to high heavens Cowboy Bebop had almost no plot development, yet doesn't seem to catch any flak for it. To me, that's being overrated So you figure using a generic sci-fi anime template with unlikeable characters to start, imposing 500 megatons of existentialist claptrap into it over the course of its run, and padding out most of the later portions with recycled animation (or no animation), and spewing boring dialogues over it, capping it out with a terrible ending really deserves the years of cover features and praise referring to it as the greatest anime tv series ever? If they were unlikeable, I'd imagine the creators did their job. Unless it was their intention that some of the characters were supposed to be likeable and sympathetic, but I don't think it was. It's also incredibly subjective whether one actually finds the characters unlikeable, which means an argument would just boil to "So and so is unlikeable" "Not to me they weren't.". And, well, Gainax, what can you say. The last few things you mentioned, word for word, apply to another colossal screwup involving them, KKNJ. But yea, those shortcomings are quite evident. But the lack of a basic ingredient in Cowboy Bebop is quite evident too, which is another show that gets absolutely pimped to the moon, many times by people who also dump all over something like NGE for being overrated. I wasn't accusing you of that, I just brought up Bebop because I happen to think it's quite a bit more overrated than NGE.

MGS3 takes place some 30 years before MGS2, in the 60's during the peak of the cold war. So you don't really have to play MGS2 first. I say MGS2 has better gameplay, so you should play that one anyway, while MGS3 has a better story.

Ao no Honoo aka "The Blue Light". Pretty good crime/drama flick. Probably give it a 7.5/10.
