I think Brodeur should rank highly among all-time goalies, but I don't think Wins is a good individual stat at least all by itself. The quality of the team apart from the goalie and even different era's (more games played, more opportunities to win games with the addition of OT and now Shootouts) are outside factors that have a big affect. Ed Belfour has more wins in his career than Terry Sawchuk but you will never convince me that Belfour is better than Sawchuk, as great as the Eagle was; likewise I will always see Patrick Roy and the much-hated Dominik Hasek as being better than Brodeur. There's no denying that Brodeur is and has been a crucial component of the New Jersey Devils, but the trap system and their solid defensive work is a good help for a goaltender, generally shots and quality scoring chances against are lower than what the average team faces. I don't want to take anything away from his peripheral stats over the years, but the fact is he has never lead the league in save percentage, coming close in just one season: 1996-97 at .927, 2nd to Hasek's .930. Every other year he has good SVPCT's (relative to the era, like Roy led the NHL in years when scoring was much higher) but nothing that bowls me over. I think if he is the greatest goalie of all time, he ought to have great SVPCT's just like Hasek, considering the type of team in front of him, and he ought to have been voted the Vezina more often than he has. He is definitely in the stratosphere of the top all-time goalies but no way do I see him as being above them all.

You mean to Sean Avery? Hart: Crosby over Luongo and LeCav Norris: Lidstrom in a walk. Vezina: Luongo over Brodeur and Lundqvist. Angle, I've been trying to convince Baron of that all season. If the Norris were based on proficient powerplay quarterbacking, then Bryan McCabe would have w....nope, I can't even finish that statement. McCabe just barely missed out on finishing within the top three in votes for the Norris back in 2004, believe it or not. Actually now that I remember, he was even named to the year-end Second All-Star Team. Still, there's no way Souray will get near the Norris trophy. "The only Norris I know is Chuck", as he once said. Leafs took the Thrashers to overtime and lost, much to the chagrin of Tampa and Carolina, teams that are both in the race for a playoff spot and the South East Division lead. Leafs just had to take a penalty in OT albeit it was kind of a stupid call to make after letting a lot of worse infractions go all game long. Antropov got called for a weak hook on Kovalchuk, who had a breakaway.

Thanks Buffalo (*cough*) for putting a little dent in Brodeur's GAA and SVPCT. I want Luongo to win the Vezina this year, partly because I'm so sick of the "greatest goalie ever" hype Brodeur gets (fuck no he isn't). I hope New Jersey gets lit up for the rest of the season. They've pretty similar numbers: Brodeur has a record of 44-23-7, 2.24 GAA, .921 SVPCT, and 12 SO's in 74 GP. Luongo has played in 71 games, a 44-20-6 record, 2.26 GAA, .922 SVPCT, and 5 SO's.

I couldn't care less about the change. Did anybody mention on here that it was the Red Wings who suggested the format change? Interesting because they'd have benefitted if the draft format was like this in the last several seasons, considering they've finished high in the standings (in 1st the last two years) but have been eliminated early in the playoffs. The Islanders/Fishsticks and 'Canes both lost tonight, the Eastern Conference playoff race is pretty tight right now. I didn't realize that even the Bruins and Panthers still have a shot at making the postseason. Montreal has fallen back to Earth in a bad way and I've been razzing a few Hab fans that I know about it because I'm an asshole like that (but they taunt me about the Leafs all the time and obviously the Buds are no sure bet to get in either so I could wind up with egg on my face). Huet being out may hurt but then again he put up a record of 3-9 in his last 12 games so I'm not so sure that even he could carry them into the playoffs for sure now. About Janssen and Kaberle, that "hit" if you can call it that (I call it an assault) was as dirty as they come and it was so infuriating to me just how little justice has been served on that at least thus far. Nobody even saw the cheapshot when it happened, not even the two Devils fans in the Continental Airlines Arena or whatever they call it. I wanted all the NJ players dead in a pool of their blood after I saw that and I still want retribution, too bad these aren't the Leafs of 3-4 years ago that wouldn't take this shit lying down. A National Post article today said that a unnamed source claimed that Kaberle would be out for the season and possibly most of the year. Kaberle refuted that assertion, as he hopes to start working out with the team soon after taking an MRI test scheduled within the next few days. Also, he had this to say about Janssen:

The NHL GM's concluded their three-day meetings in Florida today, deciding not to change the way points are awarded in the standings. They voted against the idea of 3 points for a win in regulation, 2 for an OT or SO win, and one for an OT or So loss. Why can't they just scrap the OT loss that most fans seems to hate? See Lou Lam's quote in the article below about the playoff race and parity. It helps keep losing teams in the playoff race. I don't like the 3-pts for a win idea though, I'm with the GMs who simply want to scrap the loser point. And I guess you wouldn't need a point system then actually.

I think you guys were right about Hal Gill after all. With the way he's been playing, you could just paint him orange and have a life-like 6ft'7 pilon. Pittsburgh really exposed him last night, he ended up a -4 on the night.

Yeah, I laughed too - at the Sens fans, especially after Sundin scored on Emery and gave him an earful (Emery knocked Mats' helmet off earlier), and then scored again in the shootout. Seriously though, it was a good two periods for the Leafs last night, especially the 2nd.

"MAY DAY! MAY DAY! MAY DAY!" X3000 Anyway, Antrosuck had a two goal night and the 2nd one was pretty sweet. Was behind the goal and had a Carolina player coming at him so he banked the puck off the boards behind him and it came back to his other side and then he came out and placed the puck in between Ward and the goalpost.

Antropov is NOT useless, aside from being injured all the time. Hal Gill plays well sometimes but can't fight and I've been noticing little things about him that get on my nerves lately, like his maddening tendency to go over to his defense partner's side of the ice and let an opponent on his side into the clear and he just doesn't have the speed to get back into position in time.

You saw Gill have his worst performance of the season. Otherwise, I don't think he's that bad, on some nights he's actually been the Leafs best defenceman after Kaberle... yes I really do mean it. He isn't leading the team in plus/minus for nothing. I don't know firsthand how bad he was in Boston, but perhaps he's turned over a new Leaf?

I agree. Allowing 30+ shots per game is rarely a good thing, but the Habs don't seem to allow a big pile of shots that have a high probability of going in, no matter who the goalie is. Not to take anything away from Huet at all, he is showing that last season wasn't a fluke but the shots-on-goal doesn't always tell the story about offensive-defensive play.

It's funny that you guys had to mention Hal Gill out of nowhere. The guy has been terrible tonight for the Leafs, it's too bad he isn't playing for Florida because he could've had a three point night, scoring one (kicked in) and "assisting" on two for the Panthers. Good ol' Maple Leafs... they win 9-2 one night, then the next night they're losing 7-2.

Steve Sullivan returned from his groin injury to play against Ottawa tonight, and scored the last three goals in a decisive 6-0 victory by Nashville over the Senators. In a stunning turn of events, it was Emery who got pulled midway through the 2nd after allowing all six goals on just 14 shots. Gerber stopped all 19 shots against in 28 minutes played!

It's funny to think the Blackhawks were drawing 20 000+ a game just 10 years ago. Is it just me or are both the Islanders/Devils worthless franchises? The Devils have trouble drawing fans even after they win Cups, and the Islanders don't seem to have much of a fanbase either.
  23. Mole, are you on drugs again? Nope. And Leena does that stupid little thing with her face. I can't show people because her MySpacec is gone so I don't have the link to the 10345943049933049309 pictures on PhotoBucket. Were the shadows all wrong too?

Poor Luongo. The Canucks have a shot at squeaking into the playoffs, but it's more likely that they won't, IMO, and for one more year I'll have to defend Luongo against some idiots who say Luongo sucks because they can't grasp that it isn't Luongo's fault his teams don't make the playoffs. Although he doesn't seem to be playing that great this season, unless the Canucks are giving up an even higher percentage of high quality shots than the Panthers did.
