We very much have an option on the way we perceive and enjoy the product, some people are just too stubborn to realize it. Yes, you can enjoy the product when you turn your brain off and become a zombie. Which is why I don't like anti-smarks; they promote stupidity and ignorance.

Question though, why doesn't UFC have a rule where the title can't change hands on a doctor stoppage? It would make more sense, like in wrestling with a DQ. It doesn't seem right that the champion should lose his title when something like that goes down. It should go down as a loss but he should keep the title until a rematch. Personally, I don't think this should have been a title fight anyways. Vitor beat Marvin Eastman - a top 20 light-heavyweight at best; that doesn't call for a title match. This was set up because of a previous match they had and that's it, so it should have been non-title. That's what PRIDE does and it works for them. Then, if you have an upset, you can have the rematch where the champion has to prove his worth. I agree with the sentiment that titles shouldn't change hand son things like "that", however, that leaves it up to the judges' descretion, so where do you draw the line? If a fighter gets bloodied up because the opponent was simply beating the shit out of him, then shouldn't the title change hands? Another question, they were stressing how they were going to fight a rematch at the next possible conveniance. Is it possible for them to add it to UFC 47: It's On? They've already booked all the matches.

I wouldn't mind doing a DVDVR100 style review, where you have a top 20 matches you need to see with different people looking at various "great" matches.

Thanks Dave. I really enjoyed your columns before and coming from you, this means alot. It wasn't really much of the exciting column, I hope to improve on that for the future. I'd love to do another joint-column/preview or maybe a round table discussion on various subjects. I'm hoping to try and get a non-preview column up sometime in the next 2 weeks on "The Top 10 Fighters You Need to Know About" - Dave, I'd love for your insight on that.

Randumb Quotes lifted from FFF.net "Firefly is gonna be totally unlike anything you've seen before in the spaceship genre. Very western, as I'm sure you've heard, but with Whedon-esque trademark character and dialogue. And something about a crew made up entirely of pigs." - Drew Z. Greenberg "A lot of people are asking me, you know, what exactly is Firefly? It's a tv show you morons!" - Joss Whedon "It works on you. It gets under your skin. At least, it did to me. It unfolds. Reveals itself to you." - Tim Minear on the Firefly pilot "I believe we are the only sentient beings in the universe, and I believe that 500 years from now, we will still be the only sentient beings around." - Joss Whedon "We're focusing on their struggles, not a guy with a gorgon on his templok or something." - Marti Noxon on Serenity's crew "When I pitched the show, I said it was about nine people living in the blackness of space and seeing nine different things. That's what I'm fascinated by, how they all react. They must make decisions that are horrific to people who aren't fighting for their lives every day. It's about a group of people who are living hand-to-mouth, and are heroes, day-to-day." - Joss Whedon "I'm very much of the 'make it dark, make it grim, make it tough,' but then, for the love of God, tell a joke." - Joss Whedon "Joss is very busy, and he loves it. He's like a pig in poo." - Marti Noxon on Joss "I'll do the killin' 'round here, if you don't mind." - Tim Minear "How do you create a civilization? It's a personal process. Your ethics and moral structure are going to be tested. It's about life when it's hard, about how we live when we're on the edge." - Joss Whedon "The idea that they may have invented cool lasers but not everybody can afford them is sort of the premise on which we work. Lasers take you to a science-fiction place that I feel has been covered too much." - Joss Whedon "Aliens, you know, that's something everybody else has done and is doing. It's a great metaphor to play with, but it's not what I'm interested in. I'm really interested in 'you are there,' in 'you are a part of this.' And I think aliens take you out of that. I also need to spend some time away from latex." - Joss Whedon "I like a hard world, but I like a hard world that molds good people and people with a sense of humor about the world they're in." - Joss Whedon "Darkly funny, scary in parts, honest, and original" - Jewel Staite on Firefly "I wanted to do a show about people who are not 'super,' just working-class people, the people history steps on." - Joss Whedon on Firefly "Maybe I'm just a dumb softie -- or a subtly brilliant softie. So subtle, in fact, that it cannot be picked up by human beings or any machines." - Joss Whedon "You take people, you put them on a journey, you give them peril, you find out who they really are. If there's any kind of fiction better than that, I don't know what it is." - Joss Whedon

C'mon, that was hilarious.

It said nothing about Penn "throwing" them around. It said he tapped Couture (He wouldn't be the first, nor the worst, to do so) and KO'd Linland - Busta did it and Busta is not that much bigger than BJ. They said he was hard to takedown which could mean a great sprawl or just being quick to avoid the shoot. And due to his small(er) size and flexibility, he had more mobility on his back to escape and get up. Of course, Team Quest could have been taking it easy on him due to his small size and underestmated him (Coutures quote would give that merit). What I don't buy is him beating Hughes

--A few UFC notes for tomorrow. Carlos Newton just arrived last night to Las Vegas. He had visa problems getting into the country. He had been using a student visa for years, but after a big national news feature on him was done in Canada, when he tried to get across the border, people recognized him as a fighter and it was feared he wouldn't make the show. He and Renato Verissimo have agreed to fight at 175 pounds because of the stress on Newton making it hard to make 170. Randy Couture showed up with an abrasion underneath his eye, suffered in training. While Wes Sims has talked about Bill Goldberg being in his corner, if that's the case, it's a well kept secret at UFC because nobody seems to know. Vitor Belfort is said to be completely different than ever before. He has a tendency to get very nervous before a big fight, but he's totally calm, and nobody knows, or will know until about a minute into the fight, if that's a good thing or a bad thing. The Matt Hughes vs. B.J. Penn fight has become a lot bigger among the fighters themselves. Penn trained with Team Quest in Oregon for this fight. As the story goes, during training he was able to submit Couture and knock out Matt Lindland. Lindland, who is both bigger and a better wrestler than Hughes, said that Penn was very difficult to take down, and impossible to keep down. Penn is the better striker. Couture was telling people when he first heard about Hughes vs. Penn, he thought Hughes would win, but after training with Penn, he's got a different opinion now. *jaw drops*

A message from Joss... joss - Jan 25, 2004 11:56:02 am PST #4374 of 4375 Mark "What's the rumpus?" Hey guys. Sorry to go wildly off-topic (and bring up Firefly), but I need a favor. I tried to post something on Fireflyfans.net discussion about "Fireflygasms" (no, it's not as shippery as it sounds.) Anyhoo, I can't seem to log in, 'cause I work the computer like I'm wearing Strongbad's gloves and I really wanted to post something there. So I'm gonna write it out here and hope 'n' pray (to the meaningless void) that one of y'all will be kind enough to kick it over to that thread. Okay then: ______________________ Dear fan type postguys -- Checking in to say: Rough @%&$#ing week. Trying to work the movie deal, juggling so many balls and dropping them all, basically ending the week going, "I'm done. I'm tapped. Last man down, I don't even think I can do this." Then I hap on this thread, hear all those kick moments and all y'all cooing over them, and I remember why I'm fighting so hard. So when you here dorky sounding things like "The fans' support kept us going", know that on occasion it is not only literally but very specifically true. As in, today. Thanks already. And, more importantly: -- Inara on the bed in Mal's room saying "I just hit my head is all". Deep funny. -- River on the railing. Batgirl! -- "Little man Loooved fire." -- "They were little geisha dolls with big heads that wobbled!" "People LOVE those!" Kai made me rewind that four times. -- "Dear Diary. Today I was pompous and my sister was crazy." -- "Have you ever been with a warrior woman?" -- "She ain't moving." When you think Kaylee's talking about Zoe and realize she means Serenity. And every time the lights first flicker in that show I've forgotten what ep I'm in and I get very worried. -- The part where the crew finds out about River's REAL... oh wait. That's the movie. Never mind. Or mind in a while. Thanks again. -j.

Fight and Fighter of the Day or "Faffohtduh" It's what I'm doing here (I'll try to get Penn/Hughes up today, and another match up tomorrow) The UFC preview is for this site, yes. Look for it tomorrow (hopefully) And I totally agree, FOL is my favourite kung-fooey type movie. Just bad ass fight scenes (The school, the blindfold, the end battle~!)
