The OAO Raw Thread for the 8th of December 2003

They've done Kane/Goldberg all wrong. _Goldberg_ should be the giant slayer - being the champion. He's the last bastion of hope to stop the dominating monster Kane. Of course, what they do is have Kane go after him and kick his ass a bunch of times... YAY, smell the repetitiveness.

Prediction: JR will end off the show in the screaming tirade he does for every "hard sell" before a PPV. "GOLDBERG! KANE! TRIPLE H! ARMAGEDDON! SMASHMOUTH! CHAMPIONSHIP! OH MY GOD WHAT CAN CONTAIN THEM?~?~!!>>!L~JKJHWIHF?!!!!"

Mick Foley is back as the new Co General Manager of RAW and chances are that RAW is never going to be the same! Yes! Foley will bring the FRESHNESS! Like his... last... stint... as... commish. No no no, this is something NEW - they're two GM's who HATE each other and will undermine each other's plans! YEAH! REVOLUTIONARY!

It was exactly what I expected it to be - doesn't mean it wasn't shit. I had to force myself to watch it just to see how low they could go. I don't expect them to outright bash their product and say WCW's was superior, but it would be nice if they stepped outside their own lil world and take an objective stance sometimes.

I was watching both EDDIE and GOOD BURGER this weekend and who do I see? Riley in Eddie with long, golden blonde, hair and GUNN in GB looking pretty-much-well exactly the same.... YEAH!

They must be why everybody hated it.... Oh wait. Pure Nostalgia. There's no actual reason to like that show aside from them showing old footage. How they presented it was horrible. Bret Hart was washed up by then? Dispite going on to have one of the greatest feuds in history? Riiiight. They were spinning a horrible year as something that was "great" - total revisionist history. The NWO was a sidebar and they just had to include the "guaranteed contract", because no one leaves utopia for anything but $$$. Did they mention the MSG Curtain call at all? They refused to say anything bad about that year and lost any sense of objectivity. But who cares about that when they're showing LIVE WIRE! And AHMED JOHNSON~! OMG THE GODWINS! BACKLOT BRAWL HTHAT WUZ SO AWSUM! Nothing but WWE propaganda trying to push on us something that simply wasn't.

Somebody sell me on Buffy The Vampire Slayer,

I've seen seasons 1 and 2 if you paid any attention to the other threads, and as for leaving, let me think about it...... no. And yet you have still not once commented on Buffy itself. Hmm. So. you have to give away what happened at the end of the seasons to go into detail about the characters. Just to get that straight. Considering that the final episodes usually have life-altering impacts on the characters, yes. At least, in any meaningful way. Well if you're not intelligent enough to figure out how to familiarize him with the characters without giving away everything they did, then there's these little things called spoiler tags. If Mr. J was intelligent enough to realize that I was going into spoilers after the paragraph on Xander (which featured rather mild spoilers, considering the grand scheme of things), he would have stopped if he wanted to (and who's to say he didn't?) Thus far I have yet to hear him complain, and if he had a problem he could have said so - either in this thread or PM. Infact, if anyone had a problem, they could have said so. So far it's only you who has a problem with it, and you haven't even participated in the discussion nor shown any willingness to. I'd say your only purpose in this thread is to... Spoiler (Highlight to Read): Troll But let's not go further off-topic than we already are. It wasn't "everything they did" and it wasn't in-detail either, they were key points in a characters development. Er... Because that's sorta what he wanted to know. The best way to sell him on the show is to explain why to him you like it. But why _I_ like it is different from why Mole likes it, it's different from why Ripper likes it, it's different from why YnA likes it. "It's good cause I like it" doesn't really mean anything to anyone but me. So why should it matter to Mr. J? The point is you didn't say why the characters appealed to you. Their appeal to me is different from their appeal to anyone else. Some people like Willow and thinks her character is cute - I don't. I like Spike and the fact that he loves onion blossoms and passions all-the-while trying to be the big bad vamp. But that doesn't do his character justice from just writing it - you can't convey that sort of appeal through words. Of course nevermind that all it would take is to explain what their personalities and goals and motivations are. Those things change throughout the course of the show. Xander's motivation in Season 1 changed greatly from Xander's motivation in Season 4, Season 5, Season 6, and Season 7. I took one common thread and applied it throughout. Xander grew, Buffy carried and endured, Giles protected. I then showed how they did it. If he knows everything that's going to happen, then there's really no point to watching since there's no surprise left. The point in watching is to see the characters interact with each other, their environment, and the situations that come up in every day life, and watch them grow. That's what Buffy is about - not surprises, but how the characters deal with those surprises. The real enjoyment of Buffy comes through watching the episodes again and again - because there is so many little things Joss has done that you never pick up on when you first watch it. Season 5, for example, I have watched at least 3 times through (give or take a few missed episodes). The last time I watched it was probably the best time yet - since I knew what happened and could see how everything built toward it. Ditto with Buffy itself. The relationships made and broken, the big bads who have come and gone, the continuing struggle - be it against an evil villain, parents, teachers, the world - and the family still remaining. Dude, I'm REALLY sorry that I made you feel like you needed to type all that. But honestly, no. You still shouldn't have spoiled it. Yes, I now long for those 2 minutes I spent typing that up. *weeps*. Spoiled What? If that's as far as you can go, then that's where you should've stopped. Stopped where, exactly? Me, I like to help further understanding by providing examples. Though ultimate understanding comes through actually watching it, providing a guideline, if you will, can still help. "Buffy saved the world a lot" is hollow because it happens a lot in fantasy/sci-fi. "Buffy died to save the world twice, and killed her lover to save the world" expands on it a lil bit more. Instead you opted for the "spoil shit" approach. When talking about the show and it's characters I talked about what happened in the show and to the characters. I know, I know, it's an odd approach. Look how much you're writing on it in just one post. You know a lot about Buffy, we're all impressed. Give it a rest. Give what a rest? The goal wasn't to impress, the goal was to provide information and a lil bit of character analysis. If I wanted to impress I would have done _a lot_ more than that. It might be hard for you to understand since you consider what I write to be "a lot" when, in reality, it takes me only a few minutes to type up. If you want to see me writing to impress, then read my Season 5 write-ups - but that's more for impressing people with season 5, than my own buffy-knowledge... since there are people here who are far more knowledgable than me. No, it's common sense. And it didn't have a high probability of getting them. You're the only idiot that posted huge spoilers. That's because most people here took the "watch this, and this, and this" approach. I took a different one. He didn't ask for which specific episodes to watch, he wanted to know why it was so revered. I provided some information on the characters to help further comprehension - if he were to choose to watch it. Actually, "common sense" is 'when ever a buffy thread starts, there's going to be spoilers in it' as it happens _every_single_time_ on this board. If he wanted no spoilers, he would have said so. If he was angry spoilers were used, he could have said so. The topic lends itself to unlimited discussion about Buffy. His goal was to find out why it is so revered - so it's not like he was there asking "which season/episodes should I watch". I get people frequently asking me for which PRIDE shows to purchase and I give them a list and a paragraph for each as to why it's a good buy. I don't use any spoilers unless it's (a)obvious or (b)relevant to selling it. So don't go on talking about "common sense". From what? That's some shitty reading comprehension there. "Open Mind" maybe? "Feel Free to Reply"? "I just have to know..."? Sorta got the feeling that Anyone can reply with anything related to the show...

    One good thing about 2003

Just cause there were only 3 title changes doesn't mean that those title changes weren't poorly done. Angle/Brock WM 19 certainly could have been done better and they actually managed to goof on such a natural storyline between two amateur wrestlers of different size and styles. The Kurt Angle Comeback Win ™ was underwhelming as they botched his return in a way only the WWE can (which is, give the fans hope with a kickass video package and then have Kurt and Brock be bestest friends forever and ruin another gimmie). They tapped Brock out at SS without giving it any hype at all and then had him win on TV in a match hyped very little and in-the-end he was just another evil heel cheating to win. The purpose of long title reigns and infrequent title changes is to give the belt value. What they did with it this year did anything but, in my view. Hell, the best thing they did was give a tale-of-the-tape which they botch most of the time by putting stupid things like "Battlerapped half the locker room" and doing it sporadically.

    Submissions used in MMA

That was against Igor Vovchanchyn at PRIDE 10 - Enson has commented about "Ring Enson" and "Outside the Ring Enson" - where Ring Enson would rather Die than tap, and OTR Enson sees that fight w/ vovchanchyn and shudders and thinks that ring enson is stupid. Ah fuck it, I'll just post the interview - it's really good, he talks about pro wrestling, tats, fighting and fans.... (via. Ironlife Forums.) Enson Inoue is a legend in Hawaii and Japan. He is respected all over the world as one of the toughest fighters in MMA. MMAWeekly's Mick Hammond went one on one with the one and only Enson Inoue for our Interview of the Week. MICK: First off, your tattoo collection has grown quite a bit since most fans saw you in your last appearance with Pride. You state your tattoos have deep meanings to you. Is the pain and accomplishment of getting a tattoo comparable to fighting to you? ENSON: Well, every single one of my tattoos has a deep meaning to me. Each and every one signifies part of my beliefs, my family and my life. The day I die, I will die proud with these tattoos inked in my skin. In a way, I will take all the important things in my life with me to my grave. Fighting is a whole different thing. I fight to better myself as a man. I sometimes forget about winning or losing because I'm so focused on attacking and facing my weaknesses that I can strengthen through my fights. MICK: Your website (http://www.yamatodamashiiichizoku.com) is very fan-friendly and it affords people the opportunity to speak with you via your message board and chat. You obviously take a lot of time out of your schedule to try to connect with your fans, how important is this to you? ENSON: Very important. What most fighters don't realize is that the fans are what makes us fighters. If there were no fans, then there would be no promotions. If there were no promotions then there would be no fights, and without any fights, fighters would have no work. Also, something that would take 10 minutes and a couple dollars, like sending out an autographed picture, could give a fan happiness that money can't buy. I can't pass up an opportunity like that. It's like giving a homeless child 20 bucks. 20 bucks ain't shit to me, but to a homeless child in Thailand, it would mean 2-3 weeks of food. How can you turn your back on something like that? I sure can't. MICK: You recently held a competition on your site that allowed a fan who put together a highlight reel of you to come to Japan and spend time with you. Again your connection to your fans is exceptional, how did that come about and why did you choose to do such a thing? ENSON: Yeah, he's right here as we speak. He's been here for about 2 weeks now and he's living it up in Japan. I did that contest because it was my way of giving back to my fans. Again, going back to the previous question, paying for a full expense paid trip for the winner, Brent, is nothing compared to the experience and happiness he is getting from this trip. To see him smile and thank me makes me happy to know that I'm doing something good for someone. MICK: You obviously have great love for your family, your fans, your dog and fighting. Tell us how those things influence and impact your life. ENSON: No matter what it is: family, fans, friends, sponsors, or students, I connect from the heart. Without them I'm just as well as dead. They have a major impact on my life just being around me everyday. MICK: This past year, you signed a deal with NJPW and made your first appearance in February. How did that come about and explain to us what the experience is like in NJPW compared to your experiences in Shooto and Pride. ENSON: Well, they called me. I never considered it, but the money and a lot of persuasion from Josh Barnett and here I am. I'm still not used to it, but I'm glad I gave it a shot. My heart is in MMA, but my business and face value has gone up tremendously because of Pro Wrestling. I've also met a lot of great people in the association. MICK: More and more MMA fighters, past and present, are joining pro wrestling organizations in Japan. For people in the states that do not know what pro wrestling is like in Japan, please explain the differences between it and what we see here in the states (WWE). ENSON: I think that WWE and NJPW has its hard core stuff. Japanese wrestlers will take more hits, get cut, and bleed more; while WWE wrestlers will take falls from scary heights. I think that the Japanese wrestlers can not create the drama as well as The Rock or Kurt Angle can, so they compensate by sometimes taking full on punches and actually getting put to sleep. MICK: NJPW has begun to hold MMA fights at their events this past year. Since you are currently under contract to them, will we see you in any MMA rules fights for them in 2004? ENSON: Most definitely. Pride or New Japan at 205 pounds. MICK: If you return to full time MMA competition, what can fans expect to see different from the Enson we last saw in Pride compared to the Enson of today? ENSON: An older Enson, that's for sure. Other than that, the same fire and using my head a bit more. That would be ideal. MICK: Tell us how your mentality has evolved since saying you were going to retire after your loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at Pride 19 and what it is like now with the chance you will return to MMA competition? ENSON: I think I can be more focused and because of injuries and age, I will be forced to use my head more. MICK: You are known for your never say die attitude and your unwillingness to tap out, even if it means serious damage to yourself. Can you explain to people why you refuse to tap out? ENSON: Great question. You know... there are two Ensons... one in the ring and one outside of the ring. “Ring Enson” thinks “Outside the Ring Enson” is a pussy. “Ring Enson” wouldn't tap even if he took a worse beating than the one he took from Igor (Vovchanchyn, at Pride 10). “Ring Enson” is willing to die in the ring. “Ring Enson” thinks of his fight with Igor and recalls the chances he had to change the momentum in the fight. Thinks of what he needs to work on to crush his opponent if ever in the same situation. Call it stupid or crazy, but that's the in-ring Enson, "there is no better way to die than in the midst of battle… fighting to the very end… like a man." Now there is “Outside the ring Enson” and, first of all, he thinks “Ring Enson” is an absolute idiot. “Outside the ring Enson” watched the Enson versus Igor fight and cringed the whole 10 minutes. He felt a bit scared for the guy getting pounded by Igor, only to realize that that was him. He watches the video and thinks that next time he should tap, knowing all the damage that he received during that battle. I had a ruptured left eardrum, cracked jaw (right side), swollen brain, broken right index finger, and a liver count 2000 times the normal person. I was hospitalized for 4 days and out of action for 3 months. The doctors told me that the swelling in my brain was very critical because bleeding in the brain could have easily occurred... and if bleeding occurred, I wouldn't be answering this right now. “Outside the ring Enson” says, "realize when you are defeated, get out in one piece, learn, and live to fight another day." MICK: So having said that, would you ever consider tapping out? ENSON: No, I wouldn't tap. It may sound stupid, but I would rather die than tap. MICK: That never say die attitude is shared by fellow MMA and pro wrestling veteran Don Frye. If you faced Frye, what do you think would happen? ENSON: Don Frye is a friend, so I would never fight him. If we ever did fight though, the hospital would have two bodies to fix. MICK: You’ve relocated from the US to Japan, tell us what it is like being out of the States and how you are enjoying things in your new homeland? ENSON: I love it. This is the heart of MMA. This is the place to be. This is my home. MICK: You have four Purebred Team gyms, not only in Japan, but one in Guam as well, tell us how they came about. ENSON: I was approached by sponsors. Guam was done on my own for my little brothers in Guam. All my students are my family. Of the other four, two are from legit sponsors and the other two are sponsored by the Japanese Yakuza and the Chinese Mafia respectively. MICK: The Japanese Yakuza and Chinese Mafia? What is your relationship like with them? ENSON: They are actually good friends, sort of like family. These guys’ whole lifestyle is about being tough and having power. My fighting style and beliefs just so happen to go hand in hand with what they believe is an ideal man. I get a tremendous amount of respect from these guys. MICK: There has been a lot of controversy this year in MMA. What do you think can be done to cut down on it and keep the fights where they should be finished, in the ring, by the two fighters? ENSON: Give more of a finishing incentive and recruit fighters not by their win/loss record, but instead, on their aggressiveness. MICK: In this past year, we have seen fighters such as Dan Henderson go into fights not 100% healthy. You have done this before (albeit against the wishes of doctors), how much of a disadvantage does it put you to not be at full health going into a fight? ENSON: Nothing. As long as it’s not a broken bone or a completely torn ligament, it shouldn't affect one fight. Those minor injuries only affect you as much as you let it. Mental preparation is 90% of overcoming any adversities like small injuries. If my body is not 100%, then you better believe that mentally, I'll be 110%. MICK: People have made a big deal out of the fact that Hidehiko Yoshida uses a gi in his fights. You have fought with both a gi and without a gi. Tell us, what are the differences and/or advantages/disadvantages of it? ENSON: The advantages are: it prevents slipping from sweat and it adds a few more options for chokes. The disadvantages are: your opponent can grab a hold of you and control you more. MICK: You were included in Pride’s video game, what is it like to see yourself represented in the video game world? ENSON: Pretty trippy. It's really cool. I'm flattered. However, my son always picks Nogueira and kicks my ass. MICK: Speaking of your son, has fatherhood changed you at all? Your son plays the games, so does he understand what his father does/did and would you let him get into MMA when he gets older? ENSON: Fatherhood hasn't changed me much, but it has changed my direction in life a lot. I still work hard at my future. The only difference is that, in the back of my mind, it's all about creating a good future for my family and my son after I pass on. My son understands exactly what I do. In fact, he's the very one telling me to fight in Pride again. He keeps telling me to fight Wanderlei (Silva, Pride Middleweight and Grand Prix 2003 Champion). He also wants to fight in Pride in the future and wants a shit load of tattoos too. Yikes! MICK: Lastly is there anything you want to say to the MMA fans around the world or anyone you want to give a shout out too? ENSON: Yes. I would like to thank everyone for all the support throughout the years. I look forward to getting back in the battlefield again being able to say, “I’m Back!” MMA Weekly

Somebody sell me on Buffy The Vampire Slayer,

You left out one thing... Which you haven't really done... at all. But you can try again in your next post to contribute to the discussion... unless you watch the show at all... do you? So....... what you're saying is there's absolutely no way you could go into detail about why you like the show without giving away what happens at the end of the seasons. Do I have this right? I wasn't going into detail about why I like the show... I was going into detail about the characters on the show as to familiarize him with them. As evidence by this: "To like anything you must become familiar with it." Which on line #2. Can I familiarize someone with the characters without going into detail about who they are and subsequently what they have done on the show to reflect that... I dunno. "Buffy has the weight of the world on her shoulders and faces a lot of bad guys and sacrifices a lot." - I dunno, just doesn't really "sell" very well, ya know? That's just pretty poor selling. Don't you just HATE bad selling? Oops... Since the end of the seasons tend to have the most impact on the characters, kinda hard to leave em out. Why would I talk about why I like the show? What would my personal taste have anything to do with his? He's a big Horror/Sci-fi fan, that part of Buffy doesn't really appeal to me so much as the _characters_ in Buffy do. Which is why I feel familiarization is the best way to interest someone. It is very hard to "jump in" and watch a show after it is already going (or in this case, gone). But once you have a reason to watch - a character you can relate to or have interest in - it makes the transition a lot easier. Case-in-Point, me watching PRIDE 15 for the first time. I knew Sakuraba, I knew Mark Kerr, I knew Gary Goodridge, I knew of the Gracies... but that was it. A lot of the fights I watched half-hearted because I didn't know who the fighters were and therefore didn't have a connection with them - why should I care if they win or lose? Sakuraba's fight, however, I was watching very closely because he was a highly regarded fighter and I wanted to "see the hype". Now when I watch that tape I don't just look for Sakuraba, Kerr, Gracie, and Goodridge - I watch for all the fighters. Jackson, Noguiera, Oyama, etc. and watch their fights just as intently as I did with the Sakuraba fight. Maybe I should explain the connection between my experience and why I wrote why I wrote in this thread, cause I get the strangest notion that it will fly over your head. You see, if Mr. J were to go and watch some Buffy eps. with a little more familiarity with the characters, he may start to make connections between what I wrote and what is going on-screen. Interest may increase. How on earth is what you did better? You didn't even say why you thought the stuff that happened was good, you just said it happened. Well that's terrific. Well I gave their basic roles and character types and then showed examples. There's only really so far I can go - you have to see it to fully understand and appreciate. "It has great characters - Xander is funny" is 1 dimensional. What I did was 2 dimensional. I guess I could have gone for the "what this means" and "why this is" approach, but then I'd have people complaining about me writing too much... oops again. And yet you're the only one writing 20 paragraphs on it a day. And I own no Buffy books, DVD's, or have it anywhere in my sig or avatar and my name certainly isn't buffy-related... Err... Dur...Duh... Maybe it's cause (a)I like to write and (b) no one else provided an in-detail response to his query (which I am disappointed in, I thought this would have been littered with Buffy-love. But then again, I doubt this is the first time buffy-fans here had to do this.) Um, not really. The first thing Mole said in his post was that it was an essay on season 3. So in case the first guy that posted ever plans on still watching the show, he wont read it. And if "the first guy that posted" didn't want spoilers after asking a question that had a high probability of getting them, he'd have said so. And when he said this: "I promise to keep an open mind so feel free to reply. I just have to know why this show is so revered." I kinda got the impression that he wouldn't worry about details of the show...

One thing I miss about Russo...

Russo may have used midcarders more, but their shelf-life was very short and had limited growth potential.

Somebody sell me on Buffy The Vampire Slayer,

He said "sell me on the show" - how can I sell it on him without going into detail? He wanted to know why it gets the hype.. "It has great characters - Xander is funny" WOW, gee, that should convince anyone. I wouldn't call myself a top 5 fanatic on this board, let alone "biggest". I enjoy the show. I wanted to provide perspective on it. The best way to sell something is to familiarize someone with it. Besides, there were other people "spoiling" the show, so it's not like I was the only one (infact, the precident was set BEFORE I posted). So yeah, add something or go away.

Somebody sell me on Buffy The Vampire Slayer,

Another great thing about Buffy is the variety. You get the whole shebang here. They do _everything_ well (cept maybe computer animation *groan*). Humour is really their forte as they have done some stuff that is on par with the greatest of comedies. Action is better on Angel, but it's still good here. Drama is their second strong-suit. I'll put "The Body" up against ANYTHING from ANYWHERE in the drama dept. Horror was more for the first 2 seasons, they dropped that stuff pretty fast and opted for the more season-long story-arc and big bad. Which is probably the best quality of Buffy - the Season 5 story-arc in particular was B_R_I_L_L_I_A_N_T. *Every* episode had meaning and relevance and it all came together in the "The Gift". They did all the big things well and they did all the little things well - which is the most important. Finally, their gimmick episodes rule. "Superstar" featured a nerd named Jonathon casting a spell making him the most popular, successful, etc. person on the planet and the opening montage even was tailor made with him as the star! "Hush" was done mainly in silence. "Once More with Feeling" was the best inclusion of music (it was a musical) that I have seen. It actually managed to develop characters and further storylines. "Restless" was Joss's dream episode, and by that I mean he had the majority of the show in the dreams of 4 characters - Buffy, Willow, Xander, and Giles. Best representation of Dreams that I have seen - how he made the transitions and how the characters accepted them and the cheeseman - fucking amazing.

Somebody sell me on Buffy The Vampire Slayer,

If you want me to "sell" you on it - here it goes. To like anything you must become familiar with it. The cast of Characters is rich, each one having their own appeal. The characters have also evolved, yet still kept a core-piece of their personality throughout. There are only one or two characters that I don't really like and that's not bad considering the ensemble nature of the show - and it's not that I hate them, I just don't like them. Ultimately, you must like Buffy herself - since she is the main character and the focus of nearly every episode. If you can't believe SMG can kick Vamp-ass and save the world. If you don't find her sympatheic and cannot relate with her struggles, then you can't be sold on the show. With that said, here are some character discriptions. Xander - I start off with Xander for a reason. In Season 7 he is called "The Man who See's things". He does not have any superpowers. His only two real skills are carpentry and some military knowledge (having been "transformed" into a soldier during a halloween mishap which turned all the characters into their costume... he retained some of the knowledge given to him during this time that has come in handy in a few eps.) All-in-all Xander Harris is a regular guy. He represents us. At the start of the show he was the bumbling, sarcastic, goof who pawned for Buffy. After high school, he found himself at a crossroads - living in his parents basement and realizing that he had no real use "in the gang". It was here that Xander met Anya and they had a fling - which evolved into a relationshop - which involved into a marriage proposal - which broke down when Xander saw the future (and his parents own relationship) and realized that it would be best for Anya to not marry. By the end he was really the only character who "grew up". He had a full-time job, he owned a car, had his own house... He matured. Buffy - Buffy Summers has a burden. In the film her struggles were not expounded upon. In the series, she died in season 1, had to kill the one she loved to save the world in season 2 as well as leaving home, in season 3 she dealt with the return of Angel and by the end of that season -essentially- had to leave wonderland and her prince charming. Season 4 was her transition phase into adulthood and college life which involved bad roommates, bad boyfriends, bad professors, and bad beer. Season 5 had the introduction of a sister and the death of her mother - in what has to be the most emotional episode in the shows history. Season 6 had her returning from the dead after having sacrificed her life to save the world (again) and the emotional effect that had on her. Season 7 had the pressure finally taken off Buffy when, in the end, she was no longer "The Chosen One" and was no longer alone to fight the evil in the world. "Buffy" is about rising to the occasion, even if you don't want to. It's about having the weight of the world on your shoulders, and even if you can't take another step - you still have to. It's about Life. It's about Struggle. It's about learning that you really aren't alone in the world - unless you cut yourself off from it. Giles - Probably the most complex character on the show. The best way I can describe Giles is with an exerpt from "The Gift" (Season 5 Finale).. GILES: Can you move? BEN: Need a ... a minute. She could've killed me. GILES: No she couldn't. Never. And sooner or later Glory will re-emerge, and ... make Buffy pay for that mercy. And the world with her. Buffy even knows that... (reaches into his pocket, takes out his glasses) and still she couldn't take a human life. Shot of Ben listening. GILES: She's a hero, you see. (Giles puts his glasses on) She's not like us. BEN: Us? Giles suddenly reaches down and puts his hand over Ben's nose and mouth, holding them shut. Ben struggles weakly as Giles keeps him still. Giles keeps his calm expression throughout. Giles is the father figure. He started out as a bumbling librarian, but we learned in later eps. that this was merely a front. That he had a dark past which came back to haunt him on occasions. The love he feels for Buffy is that a father would have for a daughter. Part of that is knowing when to hold tight, and part of that is knowing when to let go, and part of that is doing whatever it takes so that no harm comes to them. The role of the watcher is to not get personally involved with the Slayer - to not have an emotional connection - but Giles couldn't do that with Buffy. Willow - Ok, here's the character I don't like. Have someone else talk about Willow. The only thing I can say about Willow is that Tara was the best part of her. Tara was a soft-spoken, oft-shy, angel. Straight up. She was an Angel. She had such understanding and compassion, there wasn't really a harmful bone in her body. And when she was killed, it sent Willow on a murderous rampage. Dawn - Ok, here's the second character that I don't like. I really liked Dawn in Season 5 - where she started out as the Bratty sister of Buffy, then turned into a more sympathetic character. In "The Gift" there is a scene where Dawn is preparing to die, and she makes such slow and careful movements when putting her shoes in the right spot - it was just heart-wrenching. In "The Body" where Buffy (and Dawns) mother dies, Buffy has to tell Dawn -in school- what had happened. Very emotional stuff. After Season 5, Dawn just got annoying. Someone else can expand on that - is it Ripper of Cavi who is the big dawn fan here? Spike - I don't know if I could do Spike justice. Just watch Season 5 and you'll get the full evolution of Spike. Anya - Anya is goofy. She's a former-demon-turned-human who lacks the social nuances which makes her come-off as insensitive. She hates Bunnies... how can you not love her?
