    Has Benoit's time arrived?

I wouldn't worry about that too much yet. Time will tell what happens I guess. I am sooooooo worrying about it. That, coupled with Smackdown becoming Cenadown makes me believe that Benoit-is-fucked.

The One and Only Angel Season 5 Thread

I LOVE that episode. Buffy consoling April at the end was beautiful. The "She's a Robot" line was a reflection of how the show had evolved. This was all normal to them now. It was reflected in "The Gift" when Buffy went outside to fight the vamp at the beginning and said "wow, it's been a long time since I met one who didn't know me". Xander dancing with Buffy at the beginning showed how far their relationship had progressed - Xander "got over" her and it was a purely platonic way of expressing their feelings for each other. They love each other. The same way Xander loves Willow. The same way Giles loves Buffy and they love Giles. They're a family. This was a predominant theme throughout the season and it was especially important in *this* episode and the next one... that being "the body". April's "love" for Warren was out of duty - she was programmed to love him. "I was made to love you". She had to. It was expected of her. Buffy felt the same way - if she doesn't have a man in her life, if she can't share her love, then what good is she? This is a play on the traditional role of women in the mans world. It was one that Ted - the previous robot du jour - wanted for Joyce. April sort of struck me as a throwback to those days. Then at the end on the swing sets, Buffy is in very non-traditional attire while April is more "lady like". Buffy is basically telling that way of life, that part of her, that it doesn't always have to be that way. And then there are the words April says at the end about things getting darker before they get bright - which is definite foreshadowing to Joyces death. A mothers love is unconditional. The love between family is unconditional. When Joyce died, in terms of literal family, *in terms of blood*, all she had left was Dawn. That's part of the reason why Buffy protected her so much. That's why she was willing to let the world crumble, why she was willing to die, before any harm came to her. Dracula said the Slayers powers were rooted in Darkness, but "the gift" Buffy gave was out of love. So much stuff here...

The newest rumored return for WMXX

But Steamboat/Flair doesn't really need build up. They have years of history together. All the WWE has to do is bring out ~THE FOOTAGE~ to tell the fans who don't know, that Flair and Steamboat fighting is "HISTORIC" and "IF YOU DIDN'T SEE IT THEN, YOU CAN SEE IT NOW - FOR THE LAST TIME." Quite frankly, it's the type of feud that is meant for a short period of time - or else it would lose its appeal.

The newest rumored return for WMXX

They could have Steamer run in and the feud *start* at Mania and *end* at Backlash - but in terms of taking up a spot on the card, I don't think it would be worth it.

If Angle can't have Bret give him....

Hey, maybe now Jericho can start no selling stuff... they can claim it's his love for Trish and Trishes love for him which gives him the strength to over come all odds. Hey, it's kinda like Punch-Drunk Love So you tell me 'That's that' before I beat the hell from you. I have so much strength in me, you have no idea. I have a love in my life. It makes me stronger than anything you can imagine. I would say 'That's that', Mattress Man.

If Angle can't have Bret give him....

And Shawn seemed pretty fine the next night on RAW when he ran in to take out HHH and Jericho... or was he running on adrenaline there as well? Maybe he prayed to God and the lord gave him the strength to overcome his physical injuries... yes, that is it. It's not adrenaline, it's not being the showstopper, it's the holy spirit.

If Angle can't have Bret give him....

Crow, would you consider the back to be an integral part of the nip up? Reading what you wrote, I would say it does (I would also say that the foot is pretty important when hopping as well). Am I to believe that someone who had to retire for *4 years* because of their back, someone who after a shot from a sledgehammer was put in a wheelchair for months, someone who claimed that it could snap at any moment because it was so bad, could end up taking direct punishment on it and then use it for doing a nip up? Then why should I have even bothered watching Jericho work the back? Why should I even care when HBK's back gets injured? Why should I care when JR goes on and on and on about him retiring because of his back, when JR cries about HBK's back?

If Angle can't have Bret give him....

Like I said before, I wouldn't put it past Michaels to figure out some "fancy biology" that allows him to easily manipulate his own endocrine system in said fashion Maybe he is some sort of mystical guru who has merged his religious beliefs with modern science and thus has become super-human. Micheal's character has been built up as having an "ungodly amount of stamina"... I'd lean more towards Czechs assertion than that one. Michaels, right now, is more of the fighting veteran. He battles his way through crap. I'd say that a nip up is the opposite of that character. Sure him nipping up is a bad sell point... and it's to pop a crowd... but it's an original way to make a face comeback ... he hits the old flying elbow to the face...then NIP! Up he goes...and the crowd goes ape shit... I wouldn't call it original (cause it's been done a lot, just in different ways), but the crowd does love it. I really don't have a problem with it; what I *do* have a problem with is people trying to justify it as something more than what it is... the adrenaline excuse, the "showstopper" excuse... no, it's bad selling in hopes of gaining a crowd pop. Is it successful? Yes. Is it good? No. It ultimately hurts the story of the match, and depending on the opponent, it hurts them too. In some instances I dig no selling because it serves as a "ooooooOOOOh you're gonna git it NOW!!!" and brings ~intensity~ to the match. But that doesn't mean that it's right.

If Angle can't have Bret give him....

Let's go through the movements of a nip up. Flatback. Bring legs up. This bends the back. This puts pressure on the back. Then you push with both your legs and arms (some can do it on leg strength alone). This sends a "shock" throughout your spine (spine contracts, spine extends). The back acts as a stabilizer; it takes a lot of the inertial pressure and balances things out. It acts as a base from which the "jump" is first performed, and then as a "leveller" when "landing". Not to mention the main pressure is on the "lower" back, which is what Shawn injured IIRC (it was also the place HHH 'struck' with the sledgehammer). I can't imagine anyone with a "bad" back doing it (if that is what we are to believe), let alone someone with as "bad" a back as Shawn Michaels. In terms of "getting up quickly" - yeah, I always see that happening in MMA. Guys are on their back and they nip up... 1)It takes more energy to do a nip up than a regular stand-up as you have to also use energy to balance yourself after the momentum of the "up", 2)It's clearly not quicker and effective as you have to set it up, do it, and then balance. Carlos Newton, for example, has the quickest standup I've seen and he doesn't nip up to do it... besides, why are you trying to use logic for "the showstopper"??

The majority of the pressure in on the back when doing a nip up.

If Angle can't have Bret give him....

I thought it was also in his character to be the-guy-with-the-crippled-back? "Character" does not trump "Reality" (The reality of that universe - in this case, the universe of the WWE closely mirrors the "real world"). The Nip-Up is the equivalent of Neo getting shot a dozen times and getting up like nothing happened... of course, that wasn't "real". Even in the universe of the film, it wasn't real. It was a computer program. It was established early on that when Neo becomes the one, he can defy normal convention. We've accepted this. So I guess it's actually not the equivalent of Neo getting shot a dozen times - cause that actually made sense in regards to the story they were telling. It made sense to the universe they created. Shawn Michaels is not a superhero. The world of the WWE is not that of gods and demons. They are human. They get hurt. They bleed. That is why we invest our emotions into their matches. We relate to their pain. We see them struggle and fight. We invest our time in watching the story develop - nipping up completely negates that story. "Yeah, I was just fakin it all - I'm not really hurt. It's ADRENALINE! Oh, that that adrenaline comes and goes when I choose... ain't biology fancy"

The newest rumored return for WMXX

But WM XX is already a "supercard" - why make a match like Steamboat/Flair the 4th important match on the "big" card when you could maximize it's worth by making it 2nd most important and the "smaller" card? It's just poor match making. WM X-7 is considered one of the greatest PPV's of all time; every match wasn't a "big" match. Usually, the "biggest" shows have 2 or 3 matches and that's it. Then you just support it with a solid undercard.

    Has Benoit's time arrived?

His "stint" with the WCW title only makes his WWE title win more satisfying. He sacrificed being a World Champion in WCW for the possibility of being World Champion in the WWE - even though he had to "start all over again". It's a common theme in his wrestling career. It's his struggle. It's what makes him appeal to a lot of us. He could have had that validation in WCW yet he still decided to do what was best for his family, for his friends, and for himself - and that was moving to the more stable WWE. Now, through hard work and determination - playing by his own rules and in his own way - he has (once again) reached a point where he could have that vindication, where he could justify all those sacrifices in the past, where he could become what so many people said he couldn't be - a true champion... and this could quite possibily be his last shot, as his body degrades more-and-more. Of course, he won't win and everything will be in vain thus turning me completely off the WWE since Benoit is essentially the only reason I watch... but hey, at least he got a niftly lil write-up on WWE.com. Long Live Cena~!

    Kurt Angle Interview

Yeah, Eddie's skit was one of the highlights of 02 IMO - but Angles was still pretty fn funny. Benoit was basically an ink-blot for them to vent their own neurosis and paranoia on.

The newest rumored return for WMXX

I don't see why it would be good to stack WM XX with a bunch of "dream matches" - considering that "WM XX" alone will draw in 90% of the audience, why would putting all your eggs in one basket be a good thing? Especially when a show like Backlash - which tends to get low(er) buyrates - can be used to house one-or-two matches (esp. since it's a RAW PPV where you can do Steamer/Flair). Of course, I think the WM "cut" has something to do with it

    Kurt Angle Interview

C'mon, Kurt's skit with Benoit on the October 11th Smackdown in 02 was hilarious. It started with Eddie and Benoit talking where Benoit says nothing and Eddie runs through various emotions. Then they do it with Kurt, and Kurt steps back and thinks and says "Oh.. I see... You want my gold medals don't you?" - that was legit funny.

The newest rumored return for WMXX

Yea, but sometimes people will try and work past that. I'm not saying Hart will, but more risky stuff has been done before I can't think of anything more risky than wrestling with the possibility of brain damage.

If Angle can't have Bret give him....

This is ridiculous. No-Selling is a crowd device. It is meant to pop the crowd. But that doesn't make it good. Am I to assume that we can catagorize all no-selling as "adrenaline"? So really, there is no such thing as a "bad seller"? Unless it is part of the story of the match (which it rarely is), no-selling doesn't have it's place in wrestling. It's just lazy storytelling. "So how can we X make his comeback" "Well, just have him get up" "Wouldn't that ignore the beating that he just took" "Yeah, but the crowd will like it." HBK no selling the back-work and his history of back-problems (this supposed "career ending back injury", this injury that can put him -and has- in a wheelchair) is just careless and gratuitous. It made Jericho look like a chump and took all of his heat away. And he didn't even get a "strong" finish - it was a roll up; something that he could have done "tired and beaten". No, No, No... gotta get that crowd pop.

    The New OAO Buffy Thread

I still think they waited to long to make Glory a true badass. It wasn't untill she mind-sucked Tara. I agree with this. They started Glory off strong... then revealed she was a god... but the whole "mind-suck" thing didn't seem like that dangerous a power until she sucked Tara. Then things heated up nicely. That whole scene on the park bench was so fucking awesome.

The One and Only Angel Season 5 Thread

BUFFY: So, what do you guys think she is? I mean, this may sound nuts, but I kinda got the impression that she was a- TARA: Robot. Everyone nods in complete agreement. XANDER: Oh yeah, robot. ---------- GILES: And you're certain she was a robot? BUFFY: Absolutely. TARA: Well, she practically had "Genuine Molded Plastic" stamped on her ass. Giles and Willow give her looks. TARA: Just ... tryin' a little spicy talk. (Willow smiles) ------------------------------ WILLOW: Hey! I think I found him. A Warren Mears. He went to Sunnydale High with us for a semester, and then he went to the tech college over in Dutton. I've got a local address where his folks still live. (writing it down) TARA: He's probably home for spring break. BUFFY: Well, I'll go talk to him. (takes the paper from Willow) GILES: No no no no no, wait, we don't know what you're walking into. (looks behind him, notices a customer standing by the counter) Uh, we have no idea what his motive is for building this thing. (stands) TARA: Um ... don't you think se's just... (makes insinuating face) WILLOW: Yeah ... she's just sort of a... (makes the same face) XANDER: She's a sexbot. (to Giles) I mean, what guy doesn't dream about that? Giles walks off to help the customer. XANDER: (wistfully) Beautiful girl with ... no other thought but to please you ... willing to do anything... He looks up. Shots of the four girls staring at him. Xander laughs nervously. XANDER: Too many girls. I miss Oz. He'd get it. He wouldn't say anything, but... (clears throat) he'd get it. (Willow turns her attention back to the computer) ----------------------- BUFFY: My name is Buffy Summers. We were at Sunnydale High together. Do you know who I am? WARREN: Yes, I know. Um, April, did she hurt someone? BUFFY: Not yet. (thinks) Well, no one that matters. WARREN: She's looking for me. You know, uh, she followed me here. BUFFY: Okay, kind of figured that out. WARREN: No, no, there's more. Uh, there's something you need to know about her. BUFFY: I know. WARREN: No, wait, this is important. BUFFY: Believe me, I, I worked it out. WARREN: No, this is something, uh, that you can't possibly know. Buffy folds her arms and nods to him to continue. Zoom in dramatically on Warren taking a deep breath. WARREN: She's a robot. Buffy looks at him as if expecting more. BUFFY: Uh-huh. Blackout.
