The "smith is a virus" thing blew my mind... I never really made the connection before. The number stuff is too high concept for me to buy.

...that takes a lot of liberty with the viewers suspension of disbelief and imagination

    MMA Update!

Some of this stuff is not 100% confirmed... -PrideFC Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko (Or Emelianenko Fedor) has left the Russian Top Team and is now with the Red Devil team. From what I hear, the judo/sambo-based Red Devil team is a better place for him with better stand-up and more guys to train with. -UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia has been stripped of his title, fined $7,500, and is suspended for 4 months. (MMAWeekly Radio). Well, I guess he dropped the title on his own accord (Zuffa suggested it would be easier that way) -Early estimates for UFC 44 (Randy vs. Tito) has the show doing 80,000 buys. The company has ranged from 35,000 to 60,000 buys with the exception of the Ortiz vs. Shamrock PPV (which did 120,000 I beleive, it isnt printed in the story) As it turns out the show at Mandalay Bay didnt do nearly as good as was reported. The real figures were 10,143 fans. Heavily papered, as they only drew 7,593 paid for a gate of $1,127,985....well under the $1.6 million estimated initally after the show. This fell short of the $1,540,940 that Ortiz vs. Shamrock did. (From Da Meltz via Sherdog) -UFC will be airing their Infomercial "From Spectacle to Sport" on PPV for $9.99. However, added with that are 2 undercard matches from UFC 44 (Franca vs Uno, Thompson vs. Strebend). I've seen the infomercial and it's nice work, but for anyone who has followed the UFC for any bit of time would see it as a fluff piece. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the world’s premiere mixed martial arts sports association, will debut UFC: Spectacle To Sport, a one-hour pay-per-view special, on the iNDemand cable system at 10 p.m. EDT, this Saturday, October 18. An encore replay will start at 11 p.m., EDT, immediately afterward. Replays also will air on October 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 28 and November 3, 13 and 14. The suggested retail price is $9.95. Viewers should check local listings and www.indemand.com for daily schedules. UFC: Spectacle To Sport will provide an action-packed overview of the UFC’s evolution from a pay-per-view spectacle 10 years ago to the professional combat sport it has become today. The one-hour feature also will include the never-before-seen lightweight battles between submission specialist Hermes Franca (8-0-0) of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Japanese veteran Caol Uno (13-5-3) of Kanagawa, Japan, and Josh “The Punk” Thomson (23-1-0) of San Jose, Calif., and Gerald Strebendt (6-3-0) of Los Angeles, Calif., from the all-star, nine-fight card at UFC 44: Undisputed, September 26, from Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Hosted by Showtime, fight analyst and commentator Al Bernstein, UFC: Spectacle To Sport will give viewers an in-depth look at how the UFC was founded in 1993 and details its growth and transition from an international spectacle into a true professional combat sport under the new ownership of Zuffa, LLC, its Las Vegas-based parent company. The UFC story is told through the eyes of principal owner Lorenzo Fertitta and President Dana White, celebrities like Joe Rogan, host of NBC’s Fear Factor, fighters such as Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz, as well as mixed martial artists and mainstream journalists who have covered and reported the UFC’s growth. (MMAfighting.com) -King of the Cage has reinstated knee's-to-the-head on the ground (like Pride) From the KOTC Promoter: "KOTC will be reinstating knees to the head on the ground. After serious review of events where knees to the head on the ground were allowed. We at KOTC have seen no more damage occur from this type of strike then any other to the head while on the ground. Henceforth, they will be deemed legal strikes." (Sherdog MB)

I was reading in the paper today that Angel's second eps.' ratings went up 21% to 5 million people - or so. Good news.

    Stu Hart dies

That gets harder the more you move up in years. "The Dungeon" and "The Hart Bros Wrestling School" aren't necessarily one in the same. I believe, anyone who came out of the 80's (Bret, Benoit, Pillman, etc) had on-hand training from Stu. Storm and Jericho I'm not so sure. Then you have someone like Justin Credible who was out of that camp, but not really associated with "dungeon training"

    Stu Hart dies

Considering that Vince denied Bret's request for his promotional pictures and video when Bret was in WCW (though promised that he would let bret have them), it might be unlikely that Bret would give it to Vince... however, as of last year Vince "opened the door" to Bret in that regard... Who knows. In the early 1980s, Vincent K. McMahon, who had just recently bought the World Wrestling Federation from his father, began watching Stampede Wrestling. In 1984, only three years after disconnecting their ties with NWA, Stampede Wrestling received a sales pitch from WWF, who was in the process of buying out and running over many territories, sucking up the stars and leaving only ruins of what was once a booming wrestling business. Although Stu Hart loved his promotion, the sixty-nine-year-old promoter made the decision to sell his promotion to Vince McMahon and the WWF. In 1985, the WWF was making use of those who were once Stampede Wrestling’s biggest stars, but were not making use of the actual Stampede Wrestling promotion. That year, Vince McMahon called Bruce Hart and told him that he was “unable to fulfill the agreement”, and gave Bruce permission to reform Stampede Wrestling. McMahon was a sly businessman, though, and allowed Stampede Wrestling to reform safe in the knowledge that he was in possession of all of Stampede’s former main eventers, such as Bret and Owen Hart, Jim Neidhart, Davey Boy Smith, and Dynamite Kid. When Bruce Hart recreated Stampede Wrestling, he did so without any major stars, and the roster primarily consisted of trainees from The Dungeon, who were looking for a start in the business, hardly anyone who could draw a crowd. During the next ten years, Stampede Wrestling struggled to overcome the WWF’s monopoly on the wrestling business. In fact, there were no title changes in Stampede Wrestling between 1989 and 1998. In 1998, Bruce Hart took on the assistance of his brother, Ross, as owner and booker of Stampede Wrestling, and many new talents began popping up in the Stampede Wrestling territory. Competitors such as Harry “Bulldog” Smith (son of Davey Boy Smith), “The Stampede Kid” TJ Wilson, Dave “The Rave” Swift, Nattie Neidhart (daughter of Jim Neidhart), and Teddy Hart (nephew of Bret and Owen) have rejuvenated Stampede Wrestling and returned it to its former glory, the glory that it so richly deserves -http://www.kayfabememories.com/Regions/stampede/stampede9.htm

    Stu Hart dies

It was taken after owens funeral... unfortunate circumstances for a great picture. I believe it is from Martha Harts book (or Stu's, I forget which)... there's actually another part to it with Bret, Woman, Shane Douglas in it. http://www.dory-funk.com/owen-h.html Link to Dory Funks article on Owen

I'd say that Dory Funk Jr. was a better trainer. The list of guys he has trained (or helped train) is amazing.

    UFC on the big screen

UFC in the UK To the fans in the UK, I know this news may not seem like much, but please believe me when I tell you it is. This is the first step in getting the UFC back on television in the UK. Sometimes it may seem like we are not working on the UK or we don't care about it. Believe me; I have been fighting every day since UFC 38 to get the UFC back in the UK. We have faced many obstacles along the way and things have been happening very slowly. The Odeon Manchester Cinema will have a one-time showing of UFC 43: Meltdown on October 29 at 7:45 PM. Odeon has stepped up and really helped push the UFC in the UK. Please help fight the cause and support this event. I know it doesn't sound all that great, but trust me it is. If this showing is successful, it will lead to bigger and better things for the UFC in the UK. So please, come to the Odeon Manchester on October 29 and support the sport in the UK. Show these people your passion for the sport of mixed martial arts and show them that it has a future in the UK. Thank you all for your continued support. Your efforts do not go unnoticed and we appreciate everything you all have done to keep this sport alive. Sincerely, - Dana White, UFC President (via the Sherdog board)

    UFC on the big screen

Well that's good for Brits - I hear you don't get UFC or Pride on PPV... is that true? There is a small movement in the Underground Forums to see if we can get UFC/Pride in a theatre, and share the expense. Doubt it would happen, but it would be fun if it did.
