    Buffy Thread Enters Classics?

It's all about familiarity. It's a character driven show, so you have to know and like the characters and at least tolerate Sarah Michelle Gellar. There is a wide variety of people on the show, so it shouldn't be hard to find someone to grab a hold of and root for. Xander, Andrew, Anya, Spike, Giles are my favourite characters mainly because of their comedic value. Each of them is funny in their own way (and the comedy in Buffy rivals any sitcom in the past 10 years). Spike in particular is a riot. He's an evil british vampire who likes watching passions and eating onion blossoms... Jesus Christ that's brilliant. I'll use a personal example. I don't consider myself a Trekkie, but I like Star Trek shows. However, that wasn't always the case. I didn't like The Next Generation, or Deep Space 9, or Voyager when they first came out, or even in their first couple of seasons. Of course, that changed (I still can't watch the "classic" series, or Enterprise). With TNG it came from a clever plot where they were caught in a time loop - these kinds of storylines Star Trek excells in - and it was a pretty light and fluffy episode that allowed for the characters to have fun. With DS9 it came around the 5th season when a buddy of mine came over and we were flippin through the channels and stumbled on the show. It was when they were going to war and it was part of a big arch - after watching a bit of it I got hooked on the storyline and wanted to watch more... so I did. The more familiar I became with the characters the greater I enjoyed the show. Voyager I got into the same way, I saw part 1 of a 2 parter and wanted to know what would happen next. Got attached to the characters and got to know it better through re-runs. I got into Buffy when it started, having actually liked the Movie-version. It didn't hurt that SMG was incredibly hot at the time. Most of my friends watched it too, but stopped watching after Season 3 - I would guess that they couldn't identify with the College life so they lost interested... it didn't help that Season 4 stunk (for the most part). Season 5 brought me back (I never really left, just had Hockey games on Tues night and tended to miss a few eps.) Season 5 had them out of college and featured a loooong story-arc and fully developed main characters... which made for very easy watchin. The similarity between Buffy and Trek is that they aren't afraid to have "fun" with the characters - and once you get to know and like the characters, you will have fun too. The big hurdle for both shows is the "sci-fi" barrier - when, really, it's not about any of that at all. It's just a context. It's a device. And the great thing about that is in their respective universes, they can do anything. They are not limited to the "normal world". Plus you have to suspend your disbelief. If you don't like "shows like that" and only stick to ER and Seinfeld, then there's probably little I can do to sway you. In this world Vampires exist, this 5'3 girl has the power of 10 men, and in-the-end they always win... even against Gods.... and yes, there are Gods in this show.

...Maybe it's because I hate baseball with a passion that it doesn't appeal to me. Or that it was a Jays game and the only exciting part was the wave that went around 7 times... Good seats too, close enough to mock and heckle the batters and whatnot... which you can't do at the skydome with a bunch of kids around you... lil bastards... anyways, I've been to maybe 7 ballgames and they've all sucked. Hockey games have a tendancy to suck as well. Basketball games suck. I haven't been to football games, but I'll venture a guess that they suck too.... maybe it's my low attention sp - the only thing outside wrestling that I would enjoy watching would be MMA, and that's the same species of entertainment. Wrestling encourages fan participation, while Legit Sports don't.. ok, they do, but it's so cliched with the "charge!" and whatnot. I'm talkin about "Sit the Fuck down" and "fuck you cheap seats" chants! "Oh shit, that ball is coming right at me.. RUN!" - RRR, in the outfield, playing little league, for one season.

I went to a baseball game a few weeks ago (last game of the season), and I was sitting there bored outta my mind and I realized that no sport can touch going to a wrestling event - even a WWE one.

Yeah well, JD was the night he did the 2/3 falls match, and then the tag matches w/ Jericho, and then the TLC 3, then the cage match with Angle, then the 2 matches with Austin, and maybe the tag match vs. austin and HHH... a nice lil run goin there.

Workers Opinion: I don't hold it in higher regard than a fans', cause you know what? Some workers are dumb as a fucking tree stump and twice as thick. It all depends on what they use to justify their opinion with that gives it worth, not how many backbumps they've taken. Bret Hart calls the Ironman an all-time classic and Brock vs. Angle a great match... jesus fucking christ, what the fuck is he talking about?? And I am a huge Hart fan. Angle: Total Package?? Okey dokie. Striking - Horrible punches, that's about it. Submissions - 1... ok, if you want to count those 2 other moves he did to Raven a long time ago... 3... Grappling - sure, Olympic Gold, barely ever does it in the ring. Flying: Beautiful moonsault and a nice missile drop kick... but far from being a master high flyer. Psychology - cough. Selling - cough. Workrate - Probably the only area where he excells. Speaking - only in comedy Drawing - Ha. ...total package my ass. He works ONE STYLE in ONE COMPANY. He shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as Benoit and Eddie, let alone be called an all time great. HBK - a bad worker if you count out-of-ring behaviour such as refusing to job and not losing titles as being a worker. In-ring work, I certainly wouldn't call it bad, I just don't think it's HOF worthy or as great as some say. Austin: Master of the "little things". He was in one -if not the- best match in WWE history. His work in 2001 is amazing considering that he had a year off from neck surgery - one of the best comeback performances ever. Benoit - look at his WM-KOTR work. The man was a fucking workhorse. That span goes totally unappreciated by both the fans and the WWE. Flair - Jumbo smokes him like a cheap cigar.
