Well essentially, if you are specialized in one thing and know how to defend against the Big 3, then you neutralize the striking, submissions and takedowns and finish with your specialization. Cro Cop right now is training in BJJ and Wrestling, but it's not to takedown and tap out Fedor, it's to avoid getting takendown and tapped out - so he can keep it on his feet where he can land a highkick or something. Then there's fighters like Rampage who is especially well-rounded - he can KO (Abidi, Randleman), he can takedown (Satake, Vov), and he can submit (some GC dude ). Not only that, but he can block strikes, defend takedowns, and get out of submissions with the best of them (Abidi in K-1/Vov at Pride 22, Randleman at Pride 25, and Bustamante at the GP).

Muay Thai, Wrestling and JJ are the "Big 3" to train in - you at least have to know how to defend against all 3. Judo seems to be on the rise with the success of Karo and Yoshida - but if you know Wrestling and JJ you'd be fine without it. But ya gotta know how to defend takedowns, defend submissions, and block strikes. When you look at successful fighters today, they at least have 1 specialty, 1 worked on, and 1 other in development. The top fighters are specialized in 2 styles. In a few more years, it will be 3. MMGAY? Only if you're Wanderlei...
