Is a Saint Patrick's Day parade support of another nation? -
Okay, so someone says there could have been a communications breakdown, the firefighters might not have heard the evacuation order. Now, does that make their sacrifice any less heroic? Does it make their deaths somehow meaningless, does that reduce the loss felt by their families? No. But is it good if we obstruct a potential problem so we can have TRUE AMERICAN HEROEZ!!!1 and risk this happening again? Can't we agree that regardless of the circumstances, those people paid the ultimate price and investigate if indeed the order was not heard, and how to make sure that, heavens forbid, it doesn't happen another time?

So, Think This Will Get Any Media Attention?

I'm not saying I don't believe it. I don't know anything about the source so they could be correct for all I know. I'm keeping guarded skepticism. Wait and see. FWIW, I believe this more than I would if it was a NewsMax exclusive or something. -
Ronald Reagans state funeral tomorrow
Jobber of the Week replied to Vanhalen's topic in Current Events
I support the government keep itself restrained to non-specific religion, left to be interpreted by the viewer, with no sponsorship of any particular religion. And anyone who thinks the death of a President isn't a reason to be over-patriotic is nucking futs. -

I just personally find that song to be more about religion and less about patriotism than other songs, such as Stars & Stripes Forever, the national anthem, America The Beautiful, or others. Also, our rights were granted by a "creator", of which no specific denomination was named, thank you. -

Once it starts showing up in the AP and elsewhere, I'll be more content to believe it. -
Good kind Christ. All they said was that the firefighters probably didn't hear the evacuation signal. Giuliani was inistant on drumming up the heroicness of it all, but quite likely a number of those guys were rather suprised when the building crushed them. It is rather depressing, but that doesn't mean that the public services can't change their system to do a better job.

Blair loses really heavily in elections
Jobber of the Week replied to Vanhalen's topic in Current Events
This hardly sounds like what people are making it out to be. Was it good numbers for Labor? No. Was it the big wake-up call to Blair that everbody was expecting? No, not really. My guess is Blair doesn't go anywhere. All these "I'll show you!" Lib Dem votes disappear in the general election. -

I remember they were playing that one when they were putting him inside, too. Sure have been hearing it alot. As songs go, that one creeps me out because it practically binds the country to God, and you know how I feel about that. I kept hoping for "Taps" or something, but it seems I missed that. -

I don't mind people who want to keep alive the memory of the Confederate soldiers. You want to name a building after a guy who happened to be fighting on the losing side of the civil war? Fine. I have issues with people who want to keep alive the memory of the Confederacy itself. -
The RNC is saving Giulianni for 2008. Any 2004 term is going to begin with the fucked-upness left from the last four years, and they want to keep him away from that. Hillary or Kerry, it doesn't matter, they know they'll win. But Bush is sinking so damn hard that it's not funny. In the event that Kerry wins but doesn't fix things and it all gets more fucked up, Giulianni will look like Reagan 2.0, I swear. In the mean time, though, he needs to not shoot himself in the foot. That 9/11 commision meeting where he was like a child insisting that those FDNY firefighters in the WTC knew the building was going to collapse but continued to stay inside TO RESCUE AMERICANS BECAUSE THEY ARE OUR NATION'S BRAVEST PLAY NATIONAL ANTHEM HERE WHILE FIREWORKS EXPLODE IN THE SKY GOD BLESS instead of the reality of the situation, which was that a lot of firefighters didn't know to get out, was almost embarassing. Rudy, your calling card right now is that people trust you. Don't throw it away on rhetoric.

That's just historical symbolism of no religious context. -
The Ronald Reagan National Defense Building?

This makes me even happier to be a citizen of this country that we call Reagan. -
Indeed. I was gambling at the MGM Grand when I saw a trailer for this on a big LED jumbotron they have in a part of the casino (which is so huge that a room with a jumbotron is only "part of the casino.") It was interesting enough to pull me away from looking at my game of Wild Cherry, although "Coffee And Cigarettes" interested me more.

411 writer Eric Szulczewski spits on Reagan's tomb
Jobber of the Week replied to a topic in Current Events
Oh good lord, Reagan had more bipartisan relationships with people than we've seen in the past few years. One of the guests on Nightline monday was saying that Reagan and Tip O'Neil, Tip O'Neil of all people, could stop arguing once working hours were done and share stories. And just becuase someone doesn't agree with his policy doesn't mean they can't say he was honest about them. "I'm not worried about the deficit. It's big enough to take care of itself." Sure, that would have pissed me off at the time, but at least he admits that the deficit is growing awfully big, but he's just not concerned of it. What would you hear from today's administration? "There's no problem with the deficit. It's all under control. Trust me, I haven't made any mistakes yet." Don't forget that Reagan won votes from a large number of Democrats. To be pissy about his highly-devisive legacy right now would be turning a lot of Dems off. -

http://www.theonion.com/news/index.php?issue=4023&bypass=1 It was at about the "He and I do not agree on every point" part that I think I busted on the inside.

Not exactly true. How did the Democrats and Republicans slowly switch places in the 60s? Because they weren't trying to adopt issues and defend them at all costs like it's their mother. Ben Stein's a pretty intelligent guy, but on that one Hardball where he started going on about how he believes a Republican isn't really a Republican unless they're anti-abortion, it made me kind of sad, because we've finally reached such a point. So yeah, partisan politics have been going on for a long time, but cookie-cutter partisan thinking is rather new in the long run.

99% spots, 1% wrestling I'll stick with Molly and Victoria, thanks. -
Actually, politics is more about issues than parties. The problem is that the parties have adopted issues and gotten so riled up about them that they're currently going hand in hand. There's plenty of people who's opinon varies from issue to issue. However, a blurb in the local mailbag section of your newspaper is often too condensed to present a fair view of someone's entire beliefs.
