I started watching in 99 in the height of Russo ridulopathy. I think around the tim that Val Venis was going out with Ken Shamrock's sister or something. But if you've ever been to a live show lately you'll see that there's a lot of people who don't care about the match so much. In fact, people tend to get confused if the finish isn't well broadcasted beforehand. Cena/JBL at WrestleMania was terrible, but everyone was kind of hesitant to pop for the finish because the F-U came out of clear nowhere and people were kind of assuming it was a last-moment 2 count. Of course, the main events at WM sucked for other reasons, such as heels dominating and faces pulling wins out of nowhere.
