    Campaign 2008

By the way, my summary is that she actually did okay but she resembled Tina Fey's character of her so much with all the winking and the flop attempts at emulating Reagan (her one attempt at "there you go again" was delivered so poorly that she immediately abandoned it as soon as her lips formulated the words) and it probably hurt her since I imagine a lot of people thought of SNL when they saw her talking on about 30% of the questions. She could have really been something in 8 or 12 or even only four years, but she was so fake and gosh-darnit boy-howdy that it only reinforced the idea to me that she's simply like a campaign mascot more than a serious politician.

This butch lesbian stereotype on MSNBC is awesome. "She was folksy in a cartoonish, gimmicky way." "More like some kind of character that someone you'd actually want to spend time with."

She just used a french word that requires an accent over a letter but she says nuk-yoo-lar.

She delivered her one effective point, but I think it only pissed him off.

It's catchy though. One of the candidates in the Canadian election now talks about "kitchen tables/boardroom tables."

Well, shit. This totally rains on my "Marney / Giuliani 2012" fanfiction. Though it does kind of excuse your general dislike for things.

Four months? What did I miss in this discussion? Is "Cancer Marney" more than a nickname or something? I swear, this is what I get for not talking privately over IM with anyone from these boards.

McCain: Instead of emergency room, go to Wal-Mart

Subsidize it in exchange for them working for a period in areas that are identified as needing more doctors. This way you don't have that Canadian thing where everybody flies to Vancouver/Montreal/Toronto and the midwest is largely without service. Which would probably lead to a shortage of doctors in a decade or so. The financial incentive to become a doctor is very strong, and taking that away would result in a lot of people jumping ship on the medical program. Not true, really. The rest of the world already experiences a "brain drain" because all the talent goes to the US for the big bucks. With Universal insurance the US' pay would fall to in line with the rest of the English speaking world. So, yes, the absolute best of the best doctors would reduce in number as they are spread out around the world; but unless you personally use the Mayo Clinic or Johns Hopkins, it's not like you're getting face time with our country's best doctors anyway. And if you did use those two hospitals, you can probably afford to fly out to the doctor of your choosing.

McCain: Instead of emergency room, go to Wal-Mart

We actually could have Wal-Mart medical, if we had the UHC that McCain opposes but has always had for himself. The longest standing lobby against UHC is the medical workers unions/lobbies, because doctors are going to make MUCH less a year if UHC were ever enacted in this country. They've literally been battling it since the 40s or so. They'd be reduced to making as much as their foreign counterparts.

When someone says something to the effect of, "for people who sure to welcome so many minorities, the Democrats sure run cold when it comes turns to welcoming someone they disagree with," they're almost always talking about culture war issues. It's like when you hear someone say that the ACLU "won't defend my rights," that person is almost always an NRA member.

The US Economy and Current Financial Crisis

This is a much better picture, since it actually shows you some perspective of the population we're talking about.: We are literally talking about one in three million.

There's few arguments that I hold less respect for than "if tolerant people were really so tolerant, they'd tolerate the intolerant people!" It's completely circular logic. Is anyone voting for McCain now? It's funny that you bring up this unique viewpoint (and I stress unique), since here I am on the other end tired of listening to an old man who has been on the public dole for his health insurance since the radio era tell me about how collective bargaining is unamerican. John McCain is the expert in 'socialized medicine' since nobody has been taking advantage of it for as long as he has. I wish you'd get your act together and realize that Goldwater Conservatism is closer to Reagan Conservatism than Alan Keyes conservatism is. But at least we all get to bash away together this year. He still seems to have no interest in going after the companies that hire them. That's dishonest and you know it. Frist made legislation to outlaw harvesting. Flip flopped. His current position is seriously close to the Onion's writeup of "doesn't support anything he couldn't handle." Kruschev said in no uncertain terms that we were to be buried. And yet he's buried and his legacy to us is the Cuban missile crisis and a request that he get to meet John Wayne. I think we aren't going to see it, simply because the other two players in the space game are US and Russia, and it would cause them to forget about the whole shield kerfluffle and take a stand. China has much more to benefit from keeping Russia and the US unhappy with each other than cooperative.

We are still tied down to the civil rights era in some respects, and the Democrats have little interest in populism when it comes to civil rights. Segregation ended without popular support, and a lot has been achieved via creative intepretations of the constitution and the act of occasionally pulling a new right out of a judge's ass to help society keep with the times.

The US Economy and Current Financial Crisis

Various people: This is great! Uh, guys? You won't be buying your dream house if nobody is going to lend you any money to do it. As for the stock market, I'd rather play here in the casinos. At least the odds are posted and the game rules are known ahead of time. If I'm playing 6:5 Blackjack then I've got nobody else to blame but myself.

    Gas Stations

It's only after regularly taking the bus places that I understood that Vegas has a shit-ton of 7-11s. I mean, they're seriously at like almost every intersection. There's a lot of Terrible's, the local gas station empire, but everything that isn't is a 7-11. There's a Terrible's somewhere near the touristy parts of town that has what's called the Beer Cave, and it sounds exactly like what you'd think of when you hear the name: a bunch of beer fridges in a dark room themed liked a phony cave. There's a Chevron station just behind the Excalibur casino that's branded as Standard, because as the west-coast affiliate of the broken down Standard Oil monopoly, Chevron must have one Standard station in each state it controls the name or else lose the rights. We also have at least one of those TA truck stop things, and I ate at one in Kingman, AZ. It was the best looking place to eat in a place that was in the middle of nowhere.

The clinics at Walgreens and CVS can't really deal with anything other than routine maintenance.

    Campaign 2008: Canadian Version

Albertans always bitch about how they aren't getting enough from their natural resources. This is a 1-2-3 list of talking points. Number two is to then insist that legal language regarding the allocation of natural resources means all the oil sands money is theirs and shouldn't leave the province. Number three is is to bitch and moan about how once the Ontario manufacturing sector dies a little more, Alberta will be the only one funding every other province's equalization payments. It's a combination of insisting that all the other money is exclusively theirs and making noises about how having all the money means they're supporting people that don't. It's that American right-wing idea that simply being the wealthiest isn't satisfying enough, you also must watch everyone around you fall into the poor house and only once they're properly envious have you made it. These people usually have no answer for what the rest of the country should do except, "well maybe you should not have chosen to live in a province without oil!"

    SNL 9/27

Doesn't Rock have something to promote eventually? It would be nice if he blew through and set a bar for Obama impressions. It wouldn't be a very high bar, but at least it'd give them something to shoot for.

As I said in the other thread, the $2,500 is basically a consolation prize for having to go out there and fight on your own without the power of collective negotiating of terms.
