The Master of Side Dishes Tournament

Mac and Cheese. All too many times do I get stupid pieces of corn stuck in my fucking teeth that drive me up the fucking wall for hours on end. Mac and Cheese (and not the boxed stuff) may be the greatest comfort food of all time. Garlic Bread. First off, those cheddar biscuits are nice, but the fact that you have to eat at fucking RED LOBSTER to get a good cheddar biscuit immediately turns me off of them. If I wanted shitty service and average seafood, I'd go to Long John Silver's. Garlic bread is versatile. Two pieces with BBQ pork in between them? Fantastic. Crusty, buttery bread on the side of a steak and potato? Awesome. Ghetto garlic bread (white bread with garlic, melted butter, parmesan cheese and fresh herbs stuck under the broiler for a few minutes). Awesome. It's a versatile side food that can be eaten at the start of the meal or used to sop up the steak juices at the end. So help me if garlic bread loses. French fries. Only because they're easier to cook. A microwaved fucking baked potato doesn't taste right, and I don't always have all evening to cook one in the oven. Fries on the other hand are easy, go with lots of dishes and can take any kind of sauce you want to put on them. Vinegar and pepper? Ketchup? Anything works. Couscous.

2008 Stanley Cup playoffs - round deux

The only guys who actually pegged Julien as a decent coach was Redbaron and CG, so I'll give them credit. And I'll give Julien credit for helping the team fight its way into the playoffs (Or maybe they did it without Julien, since you guys are so up on talent carrying teams...). But acting like anyone can win with talent ignores the fact that immensely talented teams go down every year. Just having talent isn't enough to make you great, you have to have the coaching there. Great job. Seriously. Take some posts from me being beyond pissed off that Chiarelli had just wasted a season with Hitlerstache and appeared to be falling into the same trouble. As you can see in the second post, I was more pissed off that Chiarelli hadn't gone after Vokoun. And for the record, when I said: I was right. The difference is that the players saw results from Julien's system because it was easier for them to play. He still struggled with playing the kids over the vets except when the vets couldn't do anything. Kessel wasn't scratched until the playoffs, but Murray only missed time due to injuries, he was invisible when he was in the lineup. One of the best mobile defenses in the league? Underrated players like Dumont and Radulov? At least they have a complete line of NHL scoring talent instead of Savard centering Axelsson and Murray. Trotz deserved it as well. I'm still not sold on Babcock being such a great coach to have won a President's Trophy with Hasek playing as well as he did, Lidstrom being Lidstrom and the fucking Swedish national team scoring goals for them.

They're 12th in slugging, which is the root of their problems. There's no one to drive in all these guys who keep getting on base. Rolen coming back should help, if for no other reason than he sends Scutaro back to the bench. If only they had a player who could put a hurting on opposing pitching...a BIG HURT if you will.

2008 Stanley Cup playoffs - round deux

I agree that Dave Lewis was a shitty coach, but Julien took a team with really two consistantly above-average players and led them into the playoffs despite finishing top 5 in the league in man-games lost to injury. He made the playoffs with ALEX AULD making consecutive starts on multiple occasions, the corpse that is Glen Murray invisible all season, no Bergeron or Fernandez all season, and lacking the top talent that most teams have. One above-average player on offense (Savard) and one on defense (Chara). That's it. To make the playoffs with that team and not even be nominated over a guy like Babcock who could basically pull unbelievable line combos out of his ass and still make the playoffs? Hmmm...Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Rafalski...seriously? Oh but since he played shitty against his own division, let's reward him? With that talent, I'd expect him to win the fucking President's Trophy.

The sports coverage and announcing thread

Isn't Todd Kalas one of the TB television announcers? Dewayne Staats and Joe Magrane are the FSN tv guys. Kalas is the pregame and in-game guy. He's pretty good as far as that shitty gig goes.

Some people are scoring at home. For practice, you know. Nobody is worse about double plays then the Tampa FSN guys. The Red Sox hit into a few over the weekend and you would have thought they were throwing around a grenade about to explode. "BARTLETT!!! AKI!!!!! DOUBLE PLAYYYY!!!!"

Price played well in two games of that series. Boston scored at will on him in games 5 and 6.

    ChocoSocko Roundtable: The Deep South

The armpit of Florida (aka, "The Nature Coast") is home to some of the seediest hicks I've ever met. And I agree with Ripper, especially when he brought up the fine city of LaBelle, which is deep south from the Swamp Cabbage Festival every year (Most recent SCF...and no, they're not my pictures). Florida is a unique state because you can go from a city like Miami or Orlando, both hot spots of hipness or whatever, drive a few miles and you're in the fucking STICKS talking to Nadine at the Hess Express. You have hispanics working in country/western stores, hicks owning wildly successful businesses and you're able to buy homemade sweet tea and boiled peanuts from just about any gas station on a state road.

Masterson got wiped from the game, as Lopez and Delcarmen forgot how to throw strikes and Okajima just gave up the tying single. Masterson pitched well though.

The game is in HD but what you are describing would be stretching the 4:3 picture to 16:9 and Im not seeing that fisheye problem on either the regular or HD MASN on my end. He was a Yankee fan, though. and for clearly breaking the established rules (Fan interfering with ball in play), he got a Key to the City and was on Dave Letterman. I almost wished the Os had drafted him a couple years ago, I would have gone to the Shorebirds game every night and heckled the hell out of him. Oddly enough, Im going to be sitting like 3 sections over from where he was next month, Im going to try and get over to that section and "excercise the demons" before the game starts. I don't think Jeffrey Maier kicking your ass is going to help anything, Marvin.

2008 Stanley Cup playoffs - first round

Montreal didn't deserve to win that series. They played like shit for five games and still fell ass backwards into lucky bounces and gift calls. They're going to be eaten alive in the next round. They'll either draw Philadelphia or the Rags, both of whom are better overall teams than Montreal who didn't have their point total inflated by destroying a division rival all season. That said, even though the Bruins laid an egg in game 7, they have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. They were the better team in the series, they just ran into a better goaltender. That happens. If Chiarelli addresses the offensive woes in the offseason and brings in another good puck-moving defenseman, they're going to be a very, very good team next year. It sucked watching them lose to the less deserving team like they did, but the future really looks bright. Krejci, Kessel, Lucic, Sobotka and Stuart all played like they belonged in the playoffs. Too bad a gutless team like Montreal had to get some lucky bounces and ultimately the series win.

But who else is there in the bullpen, besides Rivera? 80 innings pitching like he pitched last year is probably more valuable than 200 as a starter.

I'd rather they make Joba a starter, since as a Red Sox fan, I don't really fear anyone out of their bullpen BUT Joba. If Hank thinks Joba's gonna be bringing 100 in the fifth with two men on, one run in and nobody out, he's mistaken. I think Joba's got more value to them as a shutdown setup guy, much in the same way that Papelbon has more value to the Red Sox as a shutdown closer. Bring in Papelbon and the game's as good as over. Maybe if they weren't paying Mariano 15 million a year for three more years, they could stick Joba in the closer's role or something.

2008 Stanley Cup playoffs - first round

It's too bad that the awards have already been voted on. Julien has handed Carbonneau his ass in this series by: 1- Benching Kessel and then unleashing him in two must-win games. 2- Backing Chara off almost a minute a game, and spreading the minutes more evenly rather than rely on his top four like Carbonneau is. 3- Reworking the PK completely to force Montreal to the outside with no shooting lanes. 4- Giving Kovalev different forwards against him instead of the usual Axelsson-Metropolit-Nokelainen, sometimes matching the top line with Kovalev, sometimes sending Lucic out there. The only constant has been Z. 5- Twice with their backs against the wall, entering what could be their last 20 minutes of the season, the Bruins have come out firing and have scored 9 goals in the last two third periods. Carbonneau has let the defense wither and die in front of Price, not taken timeouts when it would be a great time to do so (after the Bouillion goal in game 6, after the Bruins took the lead for good with about 2 minutes left in game 6).
