    Stern got it right.

    2006-07 MLB Offseason Thread

Awesome, now we've got Chan "Ho SHIT that guy smoked that one out of the" Park on the team. This offseason has been uninspiring to say the least. I don't see any way we can win the division with our rotation being what it is, and the WC is such a crapshoot since at least 4 to 6 teams will be strongly competing for it by the time Pedro comes back.

I'd rather see a game of HORSE with guys throwing it up from all over the gym than the dunk contest.

I hope the Celtics try to tank and end up getting the # 3 again.

    Super Bowl XLI

You can't make this stuff up. This guy DOES represent Bears fans well though.

I forget which play it was in this game, but Simms even commented on what you're getting at though he tried to spin it in a positive way by saying something like "Look how quickly Harrison gets down there . . . because he knows the Bears are the best in the league at stripping the ball and he already had the first down."

So, I'm looking to buy some gum...

Winterfresh now costs 30 cents in NYC. It doesn't sound like a big deal, but now the average vendor takes an extra 30 seconds trying to figure out how to give back 70 cents in change instead of 75.

    Yay or Nay...

I think it's one of the best movies from the '80s but like most films (sci-fi and action might be the main exceptions) the more distance you put between it and the present, the lamer it seems.

When did the Pacers decided to become Jailblazers East (Midwest?) and how much street cred does Jamaal Tinsley think he needs? It's Indianapolis, not Compton you're repping tough guy.

    Your Ideal MLB line-up

I'd go with 1. Jose Reyes, SS - In my opinion he's the single most exciting player to watch in MLB because of his speed and baserunning ability. Yes it's nice to watch a towering 450+ foot HR, but a lot of guys can do that so I'll take Jose lining one into the gap in right center at Shea and legging out a standup triple anyday. He's not a slap hitter like Ichiro either, and while this knocks Jeter out of my lineup I think we can get by without him. 2. Chase Utley, 2B - The glaring weakness in my own team's infield is 2nd base. Chase seems to be a Met Killer on par with Pat Burrell, except he actually hits well against the rest of the league as well. 309-32-102 w/131 runs scored, and he's only 28. The fact he's a lefty means he'd be an ideal hit and run guy with Reyes on 1st. I'd go with the same 3-4-5-6 as FFMS for largely the same reasons 3. Big Papi 4. Pujols 5. Manny 6. A-Rod 7. Bobby Abreu, RF - Yes, I've said I think he's lazy before, but I also think he'd fit in well with this line-up since he wouldn't have to be the star and could easily take his 100 walks, score 100 runs, get on base 42 or 43% of the time and knock in 100 just because there's not really an easy out here. When I first decided to swap Ichiro/Jeter for ?/Reyes I was thinking of putting Vladdy in here, but it just seems a bit redundant to have 4 power hitting, slow of foot right handers in a row. 8. Joe Mauer, C - I can't really think of any other young good catchers. They might exist, but I'll stick with the guy who has proven he can hit, get on base and should get stronger with age. 9. Grady Sizemore, CF - Being left with CF and not needing much in the way of power eliminated guys like Andruw Jones, Beltran and Vernon Wells from the mix. Grady's got just enough power and speed to knock in the bottom 3rd, and start a new rally as well. Since we cut Jeter to make room for Reyes, we'll stick Grady and his ladies at the bottom of the order to ensure we get some merch money from those "diehard" female fans.

    Tennis Thread: February.

At least Tiger gets excited during majors. The only times I remember Pete seeming any different was when he was crying because he was remembering his deceased coach and the time he puked twice against Corretja.

Mostly Rogue Galaxy, but also slowly making my way through FFXII & Shadow Hearts 3

    Tennis Thread: February.

I just wanted to point out that Nadal is ahead 6 to 3 against Federer who has won the last 2 matches (Wimbledon Final and the Master's Cup Semis). That gap will probably get bigger again though since Nadal's favorite time of year is coming up and Fed will likely make a few Finals on clay and lose, whereas Nadal hasn't made a Final ANYWHERE since Wimbledon. If Nadal could play up to his ranking on non clay surfaces Fed would be faring a lot better in the H2H.

    The OJ Mayo Incident

That was disgusting. He should not be allowed to "ref" again, but he got exactly what he wanted since this story was everywhere for a little while.

Eh, they had no offence before or after Benson got hurt. Their running game consisted of 1 long run by Thomas. It wouldn't have mattered.

    2006-07 MLB Offseason Thread

It seems the homers of the midwest on TSM don't understand it is possible to root FOR your team AND also root AGAINST other teams. I only like 3 teams in pro sports (1 in each of the 3 major sports), but thanks to the guys on this board I've grown to add to my collection of hated teams with the Ravens, Astros and Bears joining the Yankees, Fighting Irish and the rest of the NFC East. So thanks guys.

When was that? Was it recently? Clemens does lots of golf tournaments, so I'm not sure of when this one was, but I hadn't heard any comments where he said that he'd only play in Houston if at all. If he did say that, YEAH BOY-EEEEEEEE!!!!!!! Dear god no. If that happens the baseball thread will be unreadable all summer. viva posting about everything Astros makes the baseball threads unreadable.

    Super Bowl XLI

I used this site (http://www.footballguys.com/qbrating.htm) and just plugged in the numbers and Peyton went for an 81.8, Rex had a 68.3 but if you remove that last meaningless possession where he went 4 for 4 for 46 yards it would have been a 57.5. About what I would have expected considering Manning only threw 1 TD and Rex had multiple picks. Or, you could just look at the post above mine.

Do you happen to know if they fixed the dunk contest rules? Watching Nate blow the same dunk a dozen or so times last year killed the competition for me.

    Super Bowl XLI

People are still trying to defend the Bears' defense? Wow. If they could have made ANY key stops on 3rd down, or not dropped their safeties back 20 yards on every snap Addai, Clark and Harrison wouldn't have been able to make all of those wide open underneath catches that extended drives. The Colts repeatedly punched them in the mouth on both sides of the ball (Rhodes ran straight up the gut for at least 3 or 4 1st downs in the second half against 8 in the box) and if not for a huge gap in special teams play (a kick return TD versus 4 points left on the field by the Colts' kicking game, and allowing said TD) the Bears wouldn't have been in the game at all. Grossman didn't win the game but he wasn't supposed to. The Bears defense was supposed to be their calling card, but they couldn't stop the run OR the pass, and even with a lackluster game Manning got his ring.

    Super Bowl XLI

Yeah, I only saw Montana win 3 of his 4 Super Bowls, all of Elway and Marino's heydays, and more than enough from the other guys (Brady, Favre, Peyton) listed. I'm not that concerned with coming up with a definitive list of QBs because I'm not that retentive. It's a meaningless list that I'm not being paid for and all 6 of those guys would be in anyone's top 10 so it's not like I'm trying to squeeze a Trent Dilfer in there.
  22. naiwf

    Super Bowl XLI

Never saw those guys since I'm not in my 60s, so how am I going to rate them? The QB position was a completely different animal back then.

    Super Bowl XLI

So allowing 29 points (22 if I feel like being generous), 8 of 18 4th down conversions, 191 yards rushing (4.5 YPC), 438 yards total and 38:04 TOP qualifies as a good game now? For the second coming of the 1985 Bears 'D' they didn't get shit done in "Bears weather" with an 8 point lead. The Colts could easily have put up 40+ if not for some early nerves.
  24. naiwf

    Super Bowl XLI

I'd look at the all-time top QBs being Montana, Elway/Brady, Brady/Elway, Marino, Favre/Peyton, Peyton/Favre. Obviously either Brady or Peyton could end up at # 1 since their careers aren't over but I don't really think this win pushed Peyton into the top 5 yet and he was probably sitting firmly in the top 10.

    Super Bowl XLI

Let me recap what I said would happen to the Bears. Chicago's overrated 'D' exposed. Check Chicago's overrated running game held in check. Minus that one big 52 yd run, check. Hester providing most of Chicago's scoring punch. Check. Sexy Rexy shitting the bed in the biggest game of the season and throwing a key pick 6 in the process. Check AND Check. Peyton playing well and winning MVP. Check. The Colts easily winning by double figures. Check. I really wish I knew more about football so I could discuss the games rationally.
