The Official Gateway Championship Wrestling Thread
Slingshot Suplex replied to a topic in General Wrestling
After some very noteworthy losses of people this year, the return of Billy McNeil and CJ McManus will hopefully spark things up. -
I'm planning on going to Simply the Best....I can't decide what I'm gonna do about Friday though. I could either go to Ooltiic and then go on to Highland or I could go to St Louis for the GCW show and then go to Highland. Or I could go to work like I'm scheduled and miss both. Plus chances are,I won't get back early enough to go to work Sunday. So in theory,I'll miss two days of work. I think it'll depend on if I can get a Blues playoff ticket for next Tuesday.

This whole topic reminds me of a promo in Insane Championship Wrestling in Detroit. Sex and Violence ,a team comprised of Sexton Hardcastle (Edge) and Joe E Legend, were having a match against each other because there had been tension building between the two for a couple months. Mid-match, Christian Cage (Christian) comes out and stops the match saying how the ICW promoters were doing whatever they could to break up the team and the two shouldn't allow it to happen. Then he makes the comment to Edge that the ICW promoters won't even tell people that they are Canadian and that they are billing them as wrestlers from New Jersey. Eventually ,Rhino Richards (Rhyno) came out...they formed a heel stable managed by Handsome Johnny Bradford called Thug Life...and stomped the hell out of promoter Malcom Monroe and began a war with most of the rest of the ICW roster.

Way for Nick Dinsmore to evolve his character

They could just bring in Dr.Sydney Basil to examine Eugene and state his esteemed medical opinion and offer treatment. -
At the house show the weekend before last, they announced Jericho as "residing in Tampa,Florida". That boy is mo-bile.

Considering Cherry is only on pregame, first intermission and postgame...always go with the CBC coverage over ESPN. Fuck ESPN and their hockey coverage. Except Dave Strader. He gets an exemption from the 'fuck' clause.

I'm kinda glad the Preds are in. I'm gonna try to get to one of the games whereas I couldn't have done that in Edmonton.

How long have you watched wrestling?
Slingshot Suplex replied to JoeDirt's topic in General Wrestling
Sometime in early 1984 I think April. Was flipping channels on a Saturday and stumbled across a WWF show on the station out of Windsor,Ontario,Canada. It was a week or two after Rocky Johnson and Tony Atlas won the WWF Tag titles because I remember them showing the footage from the change. I'm not sure any one thing hooked me but I know I kept watching. Then, metro Detroit started getting cable and I had access to the NWA and then it really took over. -
Shit it only took you 7 months....it took me something like 2 years
-
Tony was a very good announcer who quickly descended into the bowels of bad announcing. His mid 80's NWA work is very good but by the time WCW ended,he was intolerable.

My rather comprehensive, insightful and witty 3/27 Raw show report gets 1 reply and fewer views and this gets six....bah! and yes, really good Jericho match but all the face Y2J catch phrases are starting to get dusted off already.

The Show-Me Center's capacity shows 7,600 people. I would assume that doesn't include floor seating so I guess we can round it off to 8,000. Looking around the building,I would say it was 80-90% full. And I was 2nd row ringside for the action. Coach comes out at the beginning and says since it was first time WWE has been to Cape in 3 years, they wanted to do something special. So,he got together with Eric Bischoff and set up the main event for the evening. Chris Benoit would be defending his World title against HHH. First match: Matt Hardy V1 comes out to a damn massive pop and offers a "double dose of Mattitude" to any of the ex-Smackdown superstars that are new to RAW. Tajiri answers the challenge. Good opening match. Tajiri wins after grabbing the ropes on a failed outside-in sunset flip by Matt. Garrison Cade vs Eugene......don't know who this Eugene guy is but he was amusing in a goofy Spike Dudley/ECWish way but a bigger build. Cade won with a top rope elbowdrop. Rob Conway vs Chuck Palumbo.... Palumbo looks a little similar to Batista to me. Conway got his French heat but the former Billy buddy gets the win with a fallaway slam. Shelton Benjamin vs Horseshoe.....Benjamin kept punking out Coach (who was ring announcer for the night.) The match itself was ok I guess. Benjamin won with a superkick. And I thought Coach announced Horseshoe as "Foreskin" over the PA. Rhyno vs Kane.....probably should have been better. Maybe would have been better with more time ...seemed kinda short. Kane wins with chokeslam. Coach interviews Chris Benoit and tells him HHH is going to take back his title tonight. Benoit responds with a crossface. As Coach is being attended to, an official announces " Coach says there will be a brief 10 minute intermission....*pause*...maybe fifteen" The show really picked up from intermission on. Molly and Jazz vs Nidia and Victoria. Too short a match.Molly is wearing a wig like her recently lost hair with a chin strap. Nidia spent all the time in the ring till Victoria got the hot tag. I believe Molly went for a leap frog over Victoria.....Vic stops short, rips off Molly's wig into the air and the now bald and distracted Molly is easy prey for the Widow's Peak. Things I noticed.... 1) Molly looks bigger on tv or they pad her up because she certainly didn't look any bigger than Nidia in terms of overall frame. 2) It was a race to see if they could end the match before Nidia or Molly fell out of their top. Nidia espcially seemed dangerously close a couple times. Not that all I was watching were boobs. It was just kinda obvious. 3) Victoria is hellaciously hot in person. Next match...Hurricane vs Batista. Batista mostly dominates as one would expect. He is a big muthafucka up close. Wins with a sick looking powerbomb. Goes for a postmatch powerbomb and our Super Hero In Training comes in for an attempted save and gets a spinebuster instead. Christian w/Trish vs Chris Jericho. They announce Jericho as "now residing in Tampa,Fla"......what are they doing migrating the Canadian wrestlers to the South now like mallards? Very exciting match.....Jericho had Christian in the Walls prompting Trish to interfere. She runs right into a Walls herself. Christian with a rollup from behind snags the three count. Post match...Y2J spanks Trish a couple times. And spouts that horrible "Evvvver" catch phrase he says when he's a face. Main event time. Chris Benoit vs HHH. Benoit, at least to my disappointment, doesn't really get the pop I had hoped he'd get. In fact, there were quite a few pro-HHH chants. But then again, there were at least 5 seperate chants of "You tapped out" at HHH as well. Another really good match. End comes when Batista gets on the apron while Benoit has HHH in the crossface. Benoit releases the hold to go after him. HHH gets the title belt but Benoit kicks him before he can hit him with it. Chris grabs the belt and knocks Batista off the apron. Benoit turns around and walks into an attempted pedigree. Benoit counters the move and traps HHH in the Crippler crossface for the second time. This time HHH taps out. A pretty good show......a little too hoss heavy pre-intermission but the 2nd half more than made up for it. The bastards wouldn't let me bring my camera in though because they claimed the lens was too "professional" size. I had 5 rolls of available film and I would have had some damn good stuff from 2nd row. In almost 20 years of going to matches,I have never been not allowed to bring my camera in for professional wrestling. Pretty much my only real true bitterness from the show. That and I didn't get any autographs.

I personally say no. Yes,he has a Cup but I think he only has 2 30 win seasons out of a 12-13 year career. The fact that's he's American will help him though. But nl5xsk1's point is valid as well. A lot of better players have/will be retired soon and will probably bump Richter down in the pecking order. And who's Giaccome? Is that supposed to be Ed Giacomin?
-
Hasn't Thibault been kinda injury prone though the last couple years? Or is it a case of him burning out from overuse? They seem pretty high on this Michael Leighton too. As for Vernon/Osgood in 97, things I've read in the summer after that Cup win, seem to indicate that Coach Bowman planned on going with Vernon in the playoffs all along. Osgood had worked a lot of the early season schedule but by the time the infamous Colorado game rolled around....Vernon started eating up most of the starts from then on.

I would love to see a Roddy Piper DVD. Mid-Atlantic feuds with Flair and Steamboat. Georgia stuff especially the angle with Gordon Solie and Don Muraco. Starrcade 83 vs Valentine including footage of the Hammer injuring Piper's ear previously. Piper's Pit. The Snuka feud. The Hogan feud.IC title win. There are a bunch of old school wrestlers that I would love to see comprehensive dvd sets for but most of them won't get it. But Piper's might actually sell.

The Blues better make it. I kinda wanna try and get to a playoff game....especially since I haven't dragged myself up to St Louis for a regular season game yet. And I think they are unbeaten in 6 games so they need to keep that up. Or I could try and road trip to Nashville.
-
Wow ESPN News actually has a graphic in the corner of the screen that stays there with a note about the time of the Bertuzzi decision. ESPN actually considers a hockey story important.....I'm just stunned.

As far as I'm concerned ,Sting hasn't been any good in a decade. So I could give a damn about seeing him in the WWE. If anything ,it would annoy me. The general public might enjoy it till he actually has to wrestle. Then the indifference would kick in.

So if Flair finally does retire probably after WM

Hercules Hernandez passes away
Slingshot Suplex replied to LucharesuFan619's topic in General Wrestling
I only remember him as a face and being terrible. Did he stay face for the later part of his career after the heel run? That is what I'm assuming. Interesting. Where did he wrestle in those days? Yeah his prime years he was heel but once he turned in the late 80's, I'm pretty sure he remained a face for his WWF tenure. 70's and 80's...I know he was in Georgia and the WWF..he was a two time IC champ back in the early 80's. I think he may have been in the Mid-Atlantic as well. That I'm not sure of. -
Naslund said. ``He wanted to make a point that you don't go out and hit our players.'' This quote is the one thing I hate about hockey. If you don't expect to take a hit, you're in the wrong fucking sport. I've seen too many times where a "star" player will take a clean hit and then a teammate will race in there ,dropping his gloves,to "protect" the player. ``If most people knew how upset Todd was by the result of what happened they would have a different view on things,'' said teammate Trevor Linden, also president of the NHL Players' Association. No ,Mr.Linden..... I certainly wouldn't. This isn't like Dany Heatley screwing around with a fast car and accidentally killing Dan Snyder. This was a premeditated attack by a thug with All Star hands and a pee wee brain.

I seem to remember Gorilla using the full name for a bit and I think I have a MSG match with his full name being used in the graphics on the introduction. I think it was dropped rather quietly early on in his WWF career. -
I stand corrected on that point then
-
He didn't knock him out with a punch to the back of the head. He knocked him out when his 235 lbs came down on his back driving his head into the ice. At any rate,it was real gutsy for 6'4 235 lbs Todd Bertuzzi to punch someone in the head from behind in the first place. And then jump on their back.

If Max Power's description of the hit on Naslund is to be believed ..and the fact the league did nothing to Moore means anything.....the hit on Naslund was accidental. Didn't I read a quote from Naslund himself that he even thought the hit was clean ..he just thought he was in a vulnerable position? Naslund missed three games with apparently a slight concussion. The incidents aren't even comparable. Bertuzzi could have killed Moore the way it happened.
