ECW has already passed so no point in recapping other than to say that the Finlay-Smith match was pretty dull live with the amount of rest holds.Crowd was pretty hot all night, there were probably 30-40% kids in the audience
Dark Match- Seamus b Jimmy Wang Yang with a Urange, Seamus came out and said Finlay was a phoney irishman and he was there to show what Ireland was really about.
Superstars- Christian and Tommy Dreamer went to a no contest when Jack Swagger interfered
Smackdown- Edge came out to a mixed reaction and gave a promo saying that He proved he was the dominant force on Smackdown by beating jeff and that Jeff didn't deserve a rematch. Teddy Long came out and said because Matt interfered he disagreed and made a rematch at Extreme Rules. Jeff came out and said that they should have a match to decide what the stip would be. Edge protested but Jeff said the WWE universe in cincinnati should decide (cheap pop) he went into the crowd and asked if people wanted to see Edge vs Jeff to decide the stip and of course people said yes.
Ricky Ortiz is now a heel and did a promo saying that because we are in an economic slump, the bengals suck and cincinnati doesn't have a basketball team, we should all rally up, behind him which led to....
Haas, Benjamin & Ortiz vs Morrison & Cryme Time- Good six man with the heels working over JTG until the luke warm tag to Morrison who pinned Haas with the split legged twisting moonsault.
Melina did a backstage promo saying that she didn't care who won the No 1 contenders match between McCool and Gail Kim. Alicia came over and said she had a message from McCool that the title is hers, Melina said she had a message for McCool and slapped Alicia.
So of course McCool beat Gail Kim for the No 1 contendership with the Styles Clash
Mysterio did a backstage interview with the announce crew (which are always fun to watch live) saying that he has moved on from Jericho and will defend the Intercontinental title against the young guys. He talked about how sacred his match was, and how it would be a disgrace to show his face (ummm yeah, I know) and that he will hold the IC title like the other Latino IC champions, like Morales, Santana and Guerrero.
Punk beat Jericho by DQ when Umaga came in with a strap and attacked Punk right after Punk hit the GTS. Umaga tied Punk into the corner and then Umaga DID A PROMO challenging him to...guess what....a strap match at Extreme Rules.
Ortiz was backstage with Maria talking about Rallying up. Maria blew him off to talk to Jeff and ask him what stip he would pick. Jeff said Maria had to wait like everyone else and walked off. Ortiz came over and said Maria was looking for love in all the wrong places and gave her the towel which she treated like a dirty sock (isn't that what it is?)
Dolph Ziggler beat R-Truth, as he was making his way backstage Khali came behind him and Ziggler ran away through the crowd.
Cut to back stage, Jericho said that Mysterio may have moved on but he has not and wanted a match at Extreme rules. Teddy Long said that Mysterio was already in there and that it would be NO holds barred.
Jeff Hardy beat Edge in a hell of a good match with the Swanton. The crowd was really into this match, with dueling Let's go Hardy, Let's go edge chants. the Hardy chants were very distinctly children. by the end of the match everyone was cheering for Hardy. Grisham came in and asked Jeff what kind of match it would be at Extreme rules and Jeff said it would be a Ladder match.
The advertised main event was a cage match with Jeff and Rey vs Jericho & Edge but of course Jeff and Edge were pulled and it was for the Intercontinental title.
About a third of the crowd left and by the end it was probably closer to 50% left.
Rey beat Jericho with an impressive jump to the top of the cage and then an escape
VERY good show
The crowd was pretty full, with just the section where the cameras were and about 2/3's of the top bowl tarped off.

A strap match between Umaga and Punk? That's not quite what I was expecting but at least they're continuing the feud.

I still don't get Vince's obsession with hometown guys losing. It's if he's saying "How dare you be from here, I'll show you, you go job now!" As if he's trying to hoodwink the fans expecting the hometowner to win. Although by now we know to expect the opposite. But it's a tough spot, Umaga needs to be reestablished as a serious threat, so he needs a PPV win. But by jobbing Punk two ppvs in a row, they are going to make the fans care less about him, therefore when he does cash MITB in, he'll get less reaction and if he does indeed win the title, he'll lose it soon thereafter and look like a chump. Hmmm it almsot seems like a self-fulfilling prophecy by WWE Creative. Now I'm sick of the IWC whining, but this is pretty blatant sabatoge. But outside of all that the match itself was really good, and the PPV as a whole was pretty good, outside of the obivous slow points, so at least WWE is becoming more consistent with their PPV shows delivering.
I think they'll cheer Punk regardless. Umaga didn't squash him, he looked decent against him, and if they continue the feud with Punk going over at Extreme Rules it'll work out.

Flair is forgetting his history...No World Title in the WWE has ever changed hands in a steel cage. I kind of wish someone would play up that stat a little bit more.
Yes it has. Jericho vs. Batista.

Stephanie McMahon held a meeting with the wrestlers at the last TV tapings and said that the company is looking to develop new stars. She said that there will be no holdbacks and for everyone to work as hard they can to achieve success. Wrestlers were also encouraged to come up with ideas for their characters and storylines. This is a major change for midcard talent, as in the past if you were not a top star then suggestions were not taken seriously. Some are skeptical on if this will lead to major creative changes for the company in the future, as most talent feel the only way to get over is during their promos, as majority of the crowd are not focused on their superb in-ring work.Credit: WON
This isn't a joke, is it? April 1st passed a month ago...
Otherwise, this is great news for the talent.

Count me in for being bored to tears during Big Show's beatdown on Cena. We all know how this is going to play out already. Cena will overcome the odds just like he fucking always does, and beat Big Show at the ppv. Then he'll FU him at the ppv, all the while the announcers will be acting like they've never seen Big Show manhandled like that before, as though it's something new. Honestly, how many wins does Cena have over Big Show anyways? It's not like WWE didn't go ahead and flush away his "he won't be medically cleared to compete for another 2 weeks" gimmick, by having him team with Batista to take on Legacy in RAW's dark match last night, so really whats the point.Honestly, I liked that. Cena sold it well. He can actually take a beatdown and look vulnerable, unlike HHH.
My opinion? Cena isn't winning. He has a movie to film.

I think they phased it out when he came to Raw.He hasn't used it since he first debuted the Go 2 Sleep against Johnny Nitro (now Morrison), for his first Money in the Bank qualifier.
That was kind of a turning point in his career since he lost his undefeated streak to Bobcore of all people, and reports were coming out that road agents were depushing him because of his attitude...and then he wins this match and suddenly has a Mania spot.
-
Jericho/Morrison and Punk/Umaga both are fresh, interesting feuds. If the goal is to cement Morrison as a face, there is currently no better heel to do that with than Jericho. I don't know why Punk/Umaga is interesting to me, must be the Punk/Joe nostalgia. He's certainly not going to G2S Umaga, and I doubt Umaga would tap if he broke out the Anaconda Vice, so I guess it will be a flash roll-up type of win. He's G2S'd Snitsky but who knows. They really do need to give him a secondary finisher for big guys.
-
What would add to the match is if the MITB briefcase was on the line for Punk / Umaga. We know Umaga wouldn't win, but it would make the match mean something in the eyes of the marks/casual fans.
Punk losing to Kane in the rematch makes sense now. They wanted to keep us wondering whether or not Punk could beat a monster convincingly.
-
I always wondered what would happen if someone who lost a 'you have to do this if you lose' match tried to skip out on the show, like Santina.
-
John Morrison and Ted DiBiase Jr.Maybe Tyson Kidd, DH Smith and Cody Rhodes...we'll have to see how their next 2-3 years play out.
I'm not sure why everyone keeps saying Ted DiBiase Jr. He hasn't shown anything special to me.

The problem with cashing in and losing is that it cheapens the integrity of the MITB match. Money In The Bank has become one of the main attractions of Wrestlemania and people generally wanna see the person who wins it, win a world title. It's similar to when someone wins the Royal Rumble, they're expected to walk into the Wrestlemania main event and walk out a champion. (this year not withstanding but Orton was a heel and fans wanted him to lose anyway). Having Punk lose will just make the briefcase less valuable and people will become less interested in the concept if they carry around this prop for months and don't utilize it.The solution is to have Punk win it in a way that hasn't been done before. The pre-announcement thing isn't bad and it could work but a fresh idea like having a world title challenger get attacked backstage and not able to compete for the world title that now. When the champion comes out, who is his replacement opponent? Cashing in the briefcase, CM Punk. Have him win it and it sets up a problem with the ex-champ and now with the challenger who never got his shot.
On paper, this is a good idea, but if you're doing it for a PPV, having the challenger get taken out beforehand makes the viewers seem cheated with a bait and switch.
You could potentially solve this by having a heel challenger get a title shot in a completely undeserving fashion, and pull this, however.

Punk's got all the tools, WWE just needs to book him properly.

Anyone taking the high and mighty stance like he is should make sure they aren't affiliated with one of the worst offenders. At this point in his career it comes off like an aging man fighting the evolution of his business, evolution he'll bash but won't refuse the paychecks that come with it.You wanna know the real problem Cornette? The really talented people in this world don't want to be pro wrestlers because of the likely hood they'll end up wrestling Danny Bonaduce in front of a bunch of rednecks.
Do you honestly think he's going to openly bash a company he works for? And besides, this isn't about TNA, it's about WWE.
This isn't evolution, anyway. This is the decline of the wrestling business and every single point he's made I agree with.

KamiRandy Orton 23
Edge 27
CM Punk 19
Santino Marella 15
MVP 18
Vickie Guerrero 6
DH Smith 2m 0
Orton and Edge will help you out with PPV points when Backlash comes around.
Heh. DH Smith with 0 points. I had money left though so I took him as filler and figured that maybe I'd get lucky and he'd join Legacy or something.
-
How did I manage to get on the bottom of the list?
-
Well I would think this means Edge comes out of Backlash as the Champ unless they try to throw us a real curve ball by having either CM Punk cash in at some point and win the championship back for Smackdown, which i think could be an interesting story if done right, and could even make CM Punk and Smackdown be thought of together making him a big star for Smackdown or an even bigger curve ball by having both World champinship belts on Raw and making the IC belt the main Smackdown beltMay's PPV is in Chicago. I think Punk cashing in MITB for the home town crowd advantage would be a solid story to tell. Punk vs Cena in Chicago would be pretty damn good. Punk would lose, but it could still be a good story.
And the crowd heat would be good as Chicago is usually a town that craps on Cena regardless the opponent. If Punk is the opponent, it could get very interesting.
For some reason I suddenly really want to see this match. As long as Cena makes Punk look like a legit threat even in loss it'd be fun to watch. If done right, it could be the thing that cements Punk as a star in the fans' eyes.
-
So in kayfabe terms, it takes Batista 4 months to recover from the Orton kick but Vince and Shane a matter of weeks? They also acknowledged the surgery he had from his injury.
-
Damn that Santina stuff was disturbing. Thank god nobody knows I watch this stuff. Why? It's just fucking comedy. Lighten up.
Except that it's not, well, funny.
The crowd laughing and everyone enjoying it but you says that you couldn't be more wrong about this.
No, Santino is terrible, regardless of what gender he's portraying.
That's your opinion of course, but as long as the majority of viewers enjoy it, it's going to stay.

I believe Judgment Day is in Chicago, so Punk will be cashing it in there to prove those who thought he got lucky last year wrong. Like RVD in 2006, he will pre-announce it I imagine. I hope Orton is champ by then so we can get the blowoff to that angle.I've mentioned it before, but with Punk winning... I fully expected Edge to retain, and Punk to go to Smackdown so he could start a program with Edge over there.
I expect there to be a new Draft rule that the title stays behind, meaning when HHH is drafted to Raw he loses his title. From there SD! can have a tournament to crown a new champion. Judgment Day is May 17th, the draft is Apr 13th, so SD could stretch out the tournement in order to have the finals (and even better the semi-finals) on the Judgment Day PPV.
You could have Punk lose the Semi's, only to use his MITB contract to make the finals a triple threat.
It wont happen, the shows wont be treated as separate brands any longer
Going into the WWE Draft on April 13, the idea is that Raw and Smackdown will no longer be treated as separate brands, but equal. Last year they moved Triple H, Jeff Hardy and Jim Ross to Smackdown to strengthen the shows transition to MyNetworkTV. The move is seen as unsuccessful considering the drop in ratings. The plan now is to move the top talent to Raw for maximum exposure, and keep two-three stars on Smackdown to keep house show business strong.Credit: Wrestling Observer Newsletter
So wait, that's not clear. Are they or are they not merging the brands? They talk about leaving stars on Smackdown as if they'd still be a separate brand.

Shitty last match if that's how he wants to go out.

Finishers end non-main event level matches 99% of the time. Unless saved by their partner in a tag match or otherwise interfered with, the person hit by the finisher will NEVER kick out on his own.
-
Oh...I thought this was going to be things like don't upgrade from coach to first class if your position doesn't warrant it, don't date above or below your position on the card, and things like that...
Are those real 'rules'? Because I've never heard of them.

The whole "Orton's been planning this for years' storyline didn't make sense because a few weeks ago you had HHH having to convince Orton to fight him at Wrestlemania. Unless, this was also part of his nefarious plan.It could have been. Orton had to have known HHH would come out and challenge him when first initially challenged Edge. That was the part where Orton agreed to challenge HHH for the title if he agreed to his terms...which turned out to be a trap.

I have to disagree with you on this one. TNA doesn't let anything sink in, and that's much worse. The announcers constantly talk over everything and spell everything out for the viewers. The silence at times can help.
