Guest Coffey Report post Posted February 4, 2003 There is no possible way that I can answer this question. To me, it all depends on what mood I'm in to decide what I want to listen too. I've never heard a song that I could listen to all the time. Sometimes I like to listen to Pink Floyd and mellow out. Sometimes I like to listen to Mudvayne or Slipknot and freak out. I think Led Zeppelin is the closest to being all around music. I do prefer older stuff though. Late 70's and 80's stuff. A lot of that shit sends me on nostalgia trips for hours at a time. The Doors, Lynard Skynard, Foreigner, REO Speedwagon, STYX, The Eagles.. stuff like that. Recently, I became a big fan of Creed. Ever since I heard their first album, "My Own Prison" all the way through, I have been a fan. I get knocked for admitting that more than you know, but I don't give a fuck. To each their own right? Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted February 7, 2003 AoO: Is Morbid Angel good for a n00b to the whole "Death Metal" genre? Because my friend won't stop talking about them and he says I should check them out. Morbid Angel is excellent. Must hear stuff as far as death bands go. Formulas Fatal to the Flesh and Gateways to Annihilation are both very good cds that I would recommend highly. They've got speed, great solos, brutal vocals, interesting lyrics that are really easy to pick out as far as death goes, and they can still slow down and chug out really groggy riffs. Definitely give them a listen if you're interested in death bands. Also be sure to check out some Dying Fetus, Origin, Mastodon, Synnichrosis, Cryptopsy, and Lividity, as that will give you a fairly decent cross section of death. DF and Cryptopsy are pretty much sick all around, Origin's faster than a band has any right to be, Synnichrosis is groggy as hell, Lividity's just disgusting gore, and Mastodon's pretty interesting shit as well. If you like any of that stuff, I'd check out some grind bands, like Nasum, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, and Suffocation.
Guest PlatypusFool Report post Posted February 7, 2003 I'm gonna have a bash at this, but really, it's completely impossible to do this of all time, so realistically, some of this will be of all time, and some has to be influenced by current tastes. Anyway... 1. Fugazi - 'Long Distance Runner' (because it's close to perfect, and nostaligic for me, although I'm having a hard time not putting 'Arpeggiator' in here) 2. Tool - 'Stinkfist' (because it reminds me of my second home, Corporation) 3. Drive Like Jehu - 'Do You Compute' (because it's as long and complex as guitar music gets while still retaining tune) 4. Rocket From The Crypt - Track 5 from Live From Camp X-Ray (because these guys HAD to be included somewhere) 5. Charles Mingus - 'Pithecanthropus Erectus' (because I need some jazz in there now I've got into it, and this is the best I've heard so far) If I had more space: Something by the Pixies, something by The Smiths, something by Radiohead. Sponge; 'Kicking Pigeons', RFTC; 'On A Rope', Proclaimers; '500 Miles' and Queen; 'Bohemian Rhapsody', all to do with memories from Corporation. Justin Timberlake; 'Like I Love You', and some Micheal Jackson, for the pop tastes. Devin Townsend; 'The Death Of Music', for a truly epic song. And that's about it, I think, at a push. Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted March 8, 2003 Lately, the top 5: Prince, "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" --Prince doing what he does best: narrative songwriting about men & women, with a 3-minute jam-out to close it off. It makes me jump around in circles. Velvet Underground, "Sweet Jane" --Can you tell I'm in an exuberant mood lately? Lou Reed's best vocal performance. R.E.M., "Losing My Religion" --Well, it rules. And I maintain that "That was just a dream! That was just a dream!" at 2:57 is the best 6 second music moment of the decade. Tom Waits, "Downtown Train" --Possibly the prettiest sounding song he ever recorded, yet it slides right into the rest of Rain Dogs. Gets a tough guy like me all choked up with emotion and crap. Tool, "Parabol/Parabola" --And there's the explosive rocker. Lateralus has slowly become my favorite Tool album; this little suite is slowly becoming my favorite song.
