Sorry for the Marvel heavy slant, but it seems that their panels at the cons were the only thing going on this week.

News on The Ultimates

- The Ultimates will continue it’s monthly schedule with issue. Brian itch asked for more time on the issue to better render the battle between The Ultimates and The Hulk. Ultimates #5 is listed by Diamond as coming out this week.

The Captain America cup truly runneth over...

At the recent Wizardworld: Chicago convention, The Marvel Max/Knights panel was populated with talk about developments in the world of Captain America:

-Regular Series News:

Artist Jae Lee will follow Trevor Hairsine and pencil four issues of the ongoing Captain America series (issues #12-15), and Joe Quesada added “if the god’s smile upon us”, John Cassaday will return to the series at that point, ideally with issue #16.

-Captain America: Ice

Writer John Ney Rieber says the storyline for the previously announced Captain America: Ice mini-series by him and Jae Lee will instead be used in the ongoing series, making up Lee’s four issues.

Rieber describes the story arc:

“Ice is set in the present day,” he explained then, “but the heart of the story is a chain of flashbacks - sixteen pages' worth in the first issue alone - that revisit the classic scenes of Cap's origin, and fills in the spaces that have always been there. Beneath the surface…and those spaces are cold. I don't know how to talk about the impact that these revelations will have on Cap without using the words that we've all heard so often that they've become almost meaningless. You know… Dark secrets. Devastating truth. A world forever changed.”

- Axel Alonso speaks on “The Truth”

Editor Axel Alonso said he’s been following some of the controversy surrounding Truth, specifically the discussion on the Newsarama message boards. The editor said readers have to remember Cap is not “static”, and that he’s at his best when he’s analogous to contemporary American society. Alonso went on to say in all the message board discussions he’s seen, no one has “nailed” what the project will really be about, saying it will not be a politically-themed story, or a some kind of politically-correct revisionist history for Cap.

Waid/Superman series gets name, focus

Mark Waid’s recently announced Superman maxi-series will be called Superman: Birthright.Waid says it’s a "very Siegel-and-Shuster-friendly look at the origins of the Superman."

Blade Sucks

-On the subject of the failure to capitalize on the success of the Blade 2 film, Quesada said, “I would say that we blew it … It may be the property, or it may be our execution of it.”

Quesada and Axel Alonso felt that while Blade could be done properly as a comic, they didn’t do it properly and it needs a different approach.

He went on to say horror is the most difficult genre to execute in comics, and it might not even work at all in comic books because you can’t control time in the manner you need to, as a good horror story is dependent on pacing for surprises.

Alonso said he does think it can be done, but also said it would be difficult and couldn’t think of a writer of the top of his head who could do it the way he envisions it.

Quesada said the final nail in the coffin for their latest Blade comic is people tend to think Blade started as a movie and became a comic book and not the other way around, which he argues automatically hurts sales.

Fantastic-ly over-ordered

-Marvel and retailer Marc Nathan, organizer of the Baltimore Comicon chose this weekend to confirm what may be the biggest retail order of a single comic by a single retailer ever.

Nathan, who in addition to organizing the con is also the owner of Cards, Comics & Collectibles in Reisterstown, Maryland has placed an order for 200,000 copies of Fantastic Four #60, the stand-alone ‘Nine Cents’ issue featuring the debut of the title’s new regular creative team Mark Waid and Mike Wieringo.

The 200k copies will be used as a promo for the con (taking place on October 26th-27th) and will be inserted into the Baltimore Sun the week before the show. Nathan will receive a customized cover for the event with a promo on the bottom of the page reading something along the lines of, “Meet writer Mark Waid at the Baltimore Comicon this coming weekend”, along with information on the con.

Quick Hits/Rumor Mill

-Marvel is no longer looking to replace recently departed Marvel Knights editor Stuart Moore. Quesada will return serving as the main editor for the imprint (in addition to his duties as E-I-C), serving as its chief story editor and talent coordinator.

-Quesada said it isn’t yet time for a Silver Surfer project, and when they do decide to go ahead with one he doesn’t yet know whether it will be a Marvel Knights title or set in the Ultimate Universe. Quesada said there is an Ultimate Silver Surfer project under consideration, but no decisions have been made.

-Fans of Steve Gerber’s Howard the Duck MAX series best savor it. While Quesada said the “door is always open” for Gerber at Marvel/MAX, he went on to say that sales of the series were getting perilously close to putting the last couple of issues into the red.

- Asked for an update on Neil Gaiman’s mysterious 1602, Quesada said Gaiman’s script for issue #1 is in and artist Andy Kubert is currently at work on it. Quesada expects issue #2 in any day, and said Gaiman is currently writing the project as an eight-issue mini-series. Also, because Gaiman wants it to come out monthly, the project will launch in spring 2003 at the earliest in order enough lead time/issues in the can.

-An artist for Grant Morrison’s Marvel Boy 2 has been selected, though Quesada did not name the artist as that 2003 project is likely very far away.

-There are no current plans for more Sentry from Paul Jenkins. Quesada said he’s left is up to Jenkins to work Sentry back into the “new Marvel Universe” (referring to the changes that have occurred since the first series), so it’s in Jenkins court. Quesada said Jenkins seems interested but he either just hasn’t worked out an approach or doesn’t enough time right now.

-Plans for Origin: Wolverine II are again being rumoured. The main sticking point seems to be the time frame. Quesada wnts to let it simmer, but Jemas wants it in production yesterday. Plans are for the same creative team to return, and for the series to cover the time frame between Barry Windsor-Smith’ Weapon X and the original Origin.

- Word is that the new Wildstorm series, 21 Down is has movie studios already bidding for the film rights. The series is written by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, and illustrated by Jesus Saiz.

- The Authority: Kev one shot will spin-off into a miniseries called The Authority vs. Kev (by the same team of Garth Ennis and Glen Fabry). DC hopes to use this to segue Kev into the regular Wildstorm Universe, and hopefully his own “Eye of the Storm” series.

- Rumour has it that Wildstorm hopes to launch a line of in-limbo DC properties this summer. Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo will be taking on OMAC, Arthur Adams will illustrate a Kamandi: The Last Boy On Earth mini-series, and Brian Michael Bendis awill team with his former Torso writing partner Marc Andreyko to write a relaunch of Challengers Of The Unknown.

- X-Men: Unlimited will begin a monthly schedule soon, with closer ties to continuity.

- Longshot is back! Judd Winnick is bringing back the lucky mutant in the pages of eXiles soon.

-New X-Men art schedule: August's issue #130 will by drawn by Earth X artist John Paul Leon, #131-132 by Phil Jimenez, #133-134 by regular alternate New X-Men artist Ethan Van Sciver, and #135-39 by the series' regular artist Frank Quitely.

-Marvel Comics have unveiled more details of New X-Men writer Grant Morrion's previously mentioned mutant Muslim character at an X-Men panel held earlier today at the Wizard World Chicago convention. The new character, named Dusk, will debut in October's New X-Men #133. The Afghani Muslim mutant will apparently have a connection to the past of Wolverine.

-Dan Jurgens will bewritieng/drawing a new miniseries to commemorate the ten year anniversery of “The Death of Superman” storyline.

-Geoff Johns will helm a Marvel: Icons like line for his JSA members.

-There is an upcoming creative change to Detective Comics. Artist Steve Leiber was previously announced as that series’ regular penciler, but Schreck named artist Tommy Castillo as the upcoming new regular penciler. Leiber’s last issue will also be Greg Rucka’s last, and then following an issue by writer Paul Boles and Rich Burchett, the new regular creative team of Ed Brubaker, Castillo and inker Wade Von Grawbadger will debut later this year.

- Five issues of the highly anticipated Jeph Loeb/Jim Lee run on Batman are aready at DC headquarters.

-Judd Winnick will write a Green Lantern/Green Arrow six issue miniseries, pencilled by Ben Raab.

-Reps at Alex Ross’ Wizardworld booth are confirming that the artist has another tabloid-sized special in the works for release in November 2003, starring the JLA. This project will be even larger in scope however, as Ross’ reps say it’s currently planned to be 96-pages. Ross reportedly also wants to do a regular comic book size prelude to that project for release this fall, though DC did not comment on either of these plans.

- Glen Fabry has been saying that he is working on a top secret project for Marvel. Kevin Smith is making the same claims. Rumour has it that they are working on the same project, and that it will be called Daredevil/Bullseye.

-DC Comics will ship in August WITHOUT the Comics Code. Titles so far include "Action Comics #792," "Birds of Prey #44," "JSA #37," "Wonder Woman #182".

-J. Michael Straczynski did not plan on keeping Peter and MJ apart in Amazing Spider-Man. The plan was to bring them together shortly, but Kevin Smith asked Marvel to be the one to bring them back together.

-At San Diego, Image Comics are planning to announce their new reinvigorated Image Universe line.

Some information gathered from Newsarama, “Lying in the Gutters” at cbr.cc, and Silver Bullet Comics. I will post my thoughts in a later post.

P.S.= Could I get this pinned?

Well, I'm now in Houston, with an apartment that's empty save for an Aerobed (VERY confortable, btw), a TV (to be returned to Wal-Mart when my stuff gets moved in) a PS2 and beer. Hey, gotta have the staples, you know.

What was I doing again? Oh, right, smart ass comments, 3 days after this is posted...

...and it's pretty damn good. I like the fact that Cap isn't a boyscout (check the last page).

>Mark Waid’s recently announced Superman maxi-series will be called Superman: Birthright.Waid says it’s a "very Siegel-and-Shuster-friendly look at the origins of the Superman."

Translation: Superman sees dead people

>Quesada said the final nail in the coffin for their latest Blade comic is people tend to think Blade started as a movie and became a comic book and not the other way around, which he argues automatically hurts sales.

Um, what about Star Wars? Geez, Joe, just say that you were focusing too much on Spider-Man...

So this dude ordered $18K of ONE comic... damn. Well done!! I'm just glad it wasn't me...

Good creative lineup, but still, who really gives a shit about OMAC? Maybe Marvel should jump in as well and contribute Devil Dinosaur and Slapstick to the line...

So if he becomes a member, who goes? My guess: TJ.

>The Afghani Muslim mutant will apparently have a connection to the past of Wolverine.

Anyone up for a game of "Six Degrees of Wolverine?"

>-Judd Winnick will write a Green Lantern/Green Arrow six issue miniseries, pencilled by Ben Raab.

Raab draws as well? Ye Gods. Let's hope that Winick can carry the Harras protege to a decent book...

DD+Smith+Fabry = some interesting and twisted shit.
