Guest Cerebus The Aardvark Report post Posted July 12, 2002 I'll give this a go... Therapy?: Check out Troublegum and Infernal Love for excellent songs all around. Specifically: "Screamager", "Misery", "Brainsaw", "Die Laughing", "Stories", and "30 Seconds". Their other albums have plenty of solid stuff also, but those 2 albums are where the best stuff is, IMO. The Afghan Whigs: I have shilled these guys everywhere for like 5 years. They broke up last year, but the frontman, Greg Dulli, has gone on to be the frontman for The Twilight Singers. The final 3 Whigs albums, Gentlemen, Black Love, and 1965, are all excellent, with the jazz/blues influences really coming out in spots on the latter 2. Specific songs: "Omerta", "John The Baptist", "Crime Scene Part 1", "Bulletproof", "Faded", "My Curse", "Now You Know", "Fountain & Fairfax", and "Somethin' Hot". There's plenty more where those came from. Also, check out their album Congregation for a rousing cover of "The Temple", an Andrew Lloyd Webber song from Jesus Christ Superstar. The band has also covered a variety of songs for soundtracks, b-side, bootlegs, etc., including: "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe" by Barry White, "Beware" by Al Green, "My World Is Empty Without You" & "I Hear A Symphony" by The Supremes, "Creep" by TLC (quite good, actually)...the list goes on. Skyclad: A few of you might know who this is, but I believe it's safe to say most of you don't. Take a metal band and add classical instruments, most notably (and most commonly) a violin, and you have Skyclad. That's a bit of a crude description, actually; they're much better than that makes them sound. They know how to write songs with the best of them, that's for sure. The Wayward Sons Of Mother Earth, A Burnt Offering For The Bone Idol, and The Answer Machine? are what I consider their best albums, although they have 7 other albums to choose from. That's amazing to me...10 albums in 10 years. In an age where bands wait 3+ years between albums, it's refreshing to see one release something every year. Standout songs: "The Widdershins Jig", ""The Sky Beneath My Feet", "R'Vannith", "Alone In Death's Shadow", "A Broken Promised Land", "Single Phial", "Catherine At The Wheel", "Helium", "Building A Ruin", "Polkageist", "Vintage Whine"...many, many more. Check them out if you like metal at all. I guess that is all for now. I defintiely second the Elliott Smith nod, and anyone who recommends CYNIC is alright by me also. I can't beleive someone is as old as me here...or at least knows of a metal band who released one album 9 years ago. Creepy.
Guest Nevermortal Report post Posted July 12, 2002 I'd like to support Skyclad. Martin Walkyier is tremendous. Check him out on "For Those Who Died" by Cradle of Filth. He does vocals with Dani Filth, its a cover of a song from his old band, Sabbat.
Guest Cerebus The Aardvark Report post Posted July 13, 2002 Speaking of Sabbat, is the whole Return To The Sabbat thing still going to happen? I haven't heard anything about it in months. Just wondering. I wish Andy Sneap was going to be involved, but I guess those are the breaks. Wow, talking about metal...I'd never have really expected it, since I don't listen to it much anymore. Good times.
Guest Anorak Report post Posted July 13, 2002 Although most people nominate Gentlemen, I think Congregation is the best Afghan Whigs album. It has an excellent 'extra' track on the end as well.
Guest Cerebus The Aardvark Report post Posted July 13, 2002 "Miles Iz Ded" *is* an awesome song, Anorak. As is "Rebirth Of The Cool", the remixed version of it. The last 4 songs on the album are all great. But my vote for best Whigs album is 1965. It just has an amazing feel to it; it's sleek and elegant. I love Gentlemen, but 1965 rules all, IMO. But it's the Whigs...it's all good.
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted July 13, 2002 1965's my favorite, but I love the other too...1965 is just the peak of seduction and groove. Too bad the bastards had to go and break up...though if you need a fix, go check out Greg Dulli's other project, the Twilight Singers. There's some great stuff on the album Twilite As Sung By The Twilight Singers, especially the tracks "Twilite Kid" and "Verde-Marti."
Guest MaxPower27 Report post Posted July 14, 2002 Well, my name plugs Reveille, so that's what I'm gonna do. Their demo tape is extremely hard to find, but stuff can be downloaded from Morphius, like unreleased tracks (Playing God) and newer versions of songs Inside Out (Radio Mix). Just for a warning, they cuss a lot, and talk about Jesus and God in not so nice ways. Their debut album, "Laced" is a lot darker than their second CD "bleed the sKY." Be forewarned, though, it's hardcore rap metal, so if you don't like rap metal, don't listen to it. Good stuff. I also like Course of Nature, and Nullset/Gangta Bitch Barbie
Guest Cerebus The Aardvark Report post Posted July 14, 2002 "Clyde", "Last Temptation", and "Into The Street" are the ones I put on repeat. The whole album is quite good...somewhat of an extension of 1965, IMO; it flows really well. And anything that seductive is good.
Guest swan Report post Posted July 15, 2002 The Afghan Whigs: I have shilled these guys everywhere for like 5 years. They broke up last year, but the frontman, Greg Dulli, has gone on to be the frontman for The Twilight Singers. I saw the open up for Aerosmith in the summer of 99 and was not impressed. Almost put me to sleep. Porbally a top 3 most disappointing band I saw live that didn't live up to the hype.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted July 16, 2002 If you like soft/melodic rock music (ie Costello) then check out this band called America. They were only around for 3 years, but has produced some great music such as "A Horse With No Name" "I need You" "Ventura Highway" "Tin Man" for example.
