October 15, 1996.

Room 313 of the Motel Hello floats in darkness. The highway outside is desolate. No cars have passed for an hour. At 3 AM, the only light that reaches room 313 is mild and silver. It is an ember from the horizon, from where the moonlight meets the glint of the streetlights littering highway 9. Everything is quiet.

It is a cold, quiet night in Phoenix.

Then, the sound of silence fades away.

“I’m…waiting for the night…to fall…”

A soft, lilting a capella floats out through the air, over the bed and the tussled sheets, past the delicate figure who rests with the hint of a smile, out the open window, into the cool, crisp Arizona atmosphere…

“I know that it will save us all…

…when everything’s dark…

…keeps us from the stark…reality…”

A light giggle escapes the mattress and its inhabitants, and the song grows bolder…but softer, closer to her face.

“I’m waiting for the night to fall…

…when everything is bearable…

…and there…in the still…all that you feel…

…is tranquility…”

“Tranquility? That doesn’t rhyme…when you sing, you never rhyme right--”

“Yes, tranquility. Now, hush. I’m getting to the good part…” He clears his throat, and in the still, his voice becomes rich and floats an octave higher...

“There is a star in the sky guiding my way with its light…

…and in the glow of the moon, know my deliverance…

…will come soon…

…I’m waiting for the night to fall…

…I know that it will save us all…

…when everything’s dark…keeps us from the stark…re--”

And suddenly, an explosive crash sounds from outside Motel Hello, and a bold flash of light flares in through the window, then fizzles. She gasps, startled. Another bang, and another crash, and another flickering flare. He leaps off the bed, throws his long hair from his face, and bolts for the window as the flashes keep coming. “What was that? What was that?” She is terrified.

He might be, too.

He looks outside the window, down onto Highway 9. His jaw drops for a moment. The streetlights are all broken.

Except for one.

Across the road, near the fields, clear across from room 313, stands the one tall light, flickering steadily, casting a haze down to a vague figure, standing in the shadows…and gazing upward.

He backs away from the window, and a shudder runs through his spine. The figure on the street cocks his head. He draws the curtains, and hurries back to the bed. “What was it?”

Be calm.

“Nothing, dear…nothing at all.”

“You sure?”

“…yeah. Let’s…get some sleep, all right?”

She hesitates…then shrugs, and obliges. She thinks nothing of it, it seems. She is soon asleep.

He does not sleep that night. Instead, he lay on his back, her head rested across his chest as he stares up into the spinning ceiling fan. The blades spin in a slow, deliberate circle, pushing air down, pulling it up again. They start in one place, and within a moment, they have all spun right back to where they started.

It is a cold night in Phoenix.

In the twisting halls of the Richmond Coliseum, Edwin stands, leaning against the concrete block wall. His eyes glaze over as he stares up at the ceiling fan, looking past it, drifting out of focus, staring into space…

“Edwin? Edwin?” The voice jolts him, and he snaps out of his daze. He turns to see Chris Raynor standing by his side, a concerned look across his usually happy-go-lucky visage. “Jeez, Edwin. You’ve been staring at the wall for five minutes. What’s up? Stressing on the match? The Magnificent Seven? You still worried about the Clan?”

Edwin smiles as best he can, and looks his friend in the eyes. “Yeah, Chris. You got me.” He looks back to the ceiling.

The smile fades.

“I’m worried about the Clan.”

A three page promo just frightened me more than The Exorcist ever did.

*hides under the covers*

Add another notch to the "Good promos by Edwin" list... what is it now, like 400?

Kaiser Scose!!!

Yeah, i'm sure that's not how you spell it, but.....sue me.

Nice one Edwin...although the subsequent story that comes out of it will determine just how deep this promo is. I wonder what this is setting up. Who's gonna return now?

Thanks for the kind words, guys. I think you all have, but if you haven't, I recommend you check out Silent's promos on the JL board. Call it a 'brand extension'...

Damn... just damn...

I like where this storyline is heading, giving Edwin a little depth to his character that we haven't seen before. If you aren't keeping up with the JL (at least a little) shame on you.
