Has the world gone mad?

Guest Deviance

I liked the segment except for the commentary afterwards. It may all be nostalgia but at least it was entertaining. I never liked any of the guys IN the nWo but for some reason I always liked "THE nwo". After giving up on wrestling during the oh so entertaining days of Maxx Moon, and Nailz, it was by accident I saw one of the first nitro's featuring the whole thing. I'll give WCW credit for making me want to watch what would happen next back then. (i.e. everyone gets wiped out backstage at universal studios or wherever they were, and mumbling about a 3rd or 4th with them). Granted the payoff wasn't much but that angle (and the luchadore matches) alone kept me watching the whole show. Or maybe it's just that porno music they use. Whatever, I was entertained for the first time in awhile.

Yeah yeah the marks invaded.  Whatever you say pal.  Most of us are from the old board.  We can actually sit back and well, enjoy a good show, and not just bitch and moan about luchadors.  If you liked luchadors so much, why the hell did you EVER watch the WWF?  You should have kept watching your precious 3 hour Nitro's with 2 hours of luchadors, no promos, no buildups, no storylines, and just sat there jerking off over them and be happy.

First of all, the "board has gone to hell" thing... this is the NEW SmarKboard buddy.  Now onto the subject at hand... I realize the author of the board didn't like the Rock/Hogan promo, but it seems to me that the people that didn't like it also have personal problems with Rock and/or Hogan, so I bet that's tainting your opinion at least a little.  Did any of you guys actually bother to pay attention to the paying audience in attendance?  THAT is why this took so much time?  The reaction was absolutly GOLDEN.  I have my favorites and my least favorites, but I don't think it matters as long as long as they are effective in doing thier job.  For instance, Bossman deciding to choke out DDP and attack him with the nightstick for NO reason is easier forgotten than remembered.  However Rock vs. Hogan at WM is being billed as the "battle of the biggest stars EVER", so I think it warrents as much TV time as they need to get it over.  From the looks of thing, or rather the sound of things, mission accomplished.  I think the whole trailer truck thing, while Nitroish (which is a positive or a negative, depending who you talk to), was pretty kewl.  I like seeing things go smash though.  Jim Ross and King need to learn that it isn't always neccessary to talk so fucking much.  It's like they are deathly afraid of people forming thier own opinions so they beat you over the head with what they want you to think.  Like when Hogan was coming down the ramp for his promo and JR is all, "Hogan is a VILE and DISGUSTING human being" and stuff.  Why?  What did he do that was so bad?  Let him show us he's VILE and DISGUSTING by ramming a guy in an ambulance, no one is buying it just because you say so JR.  Was he VILE and DISGUSTING for making Stone Cold lose his match?  Who doesn't do that?  JR is getting more like Tony Schavonie with every utterance, in my opinion.  And as far as using the "Owen just died" mode to push an angle, it makes me wonder how sincerly they cared after Owen had just actually died.

In other words, I loved the promo, it's the type of stuff I watch this crap for.  I thought the "HULK SMASH!!" bit was more than a little overkill, but I enjoyed it and thought it was still effective.  And I am growing more and more displeased with the announcing and basically starting to believe they are VILE and DISGUSTING.

agreed rhyno....JR and lawler were the one true negative....with ross blabbing on about hogan needs to make a decison during the whole promo which TOTALLY killed the moment for me.And then him selling it as a "tragedy" was just sick....

I agree with Kahran Rasmus.

Everyone is talking like it's 1985.

Wait until the big payoff match...that ought to be wonderful.

It just might be.

Of course it won't be anything special if you judge all matches on the "workrate" and "movesets" used by the combatants but it will more than likely be good as an entertaining match that consists of lots of drama and meaning due to the significance of it all.

Agreed. so long as Hogan is in decent shape and isn't embarrasing, I'm really looking forward to it.

I am in the minority here but I don't want to see Rock-Hogan. Did the WWF give an exciting angle? Yes. Will the match be as exciting? I don't think so. Why get excited when the payoff is below expectations?

The WWF has screwed up almost every angle in the last year and a half. Most of the angles begin with a shocking must-see raw moment. Remember Heyman's mini-ECW invasion? It was great until the last three minutes when Steph was introduced as the owner.

Remember Vince and Shane on Nitro? It was surreal but turned into the most disappointing angle ever.

Why do you have faith in the WWF to capitalize on this angle when they've failed in every other can't miss angle? How happy are you gonna be to see the NWO when Steph is in Liz's role and there's thirty nonsensical crossovers?

Last night's Hogan-Rock interview was AWESOME but so was the ECW invasion, and countless other angles that lead nowhere. Aren't you tired of waiting for the payoff that never comes? do you think the ending of the Mania match will be clean?

Hell, the WWF has gotten us excited before and failed to deliver. Why will this be any different?

I agree completely that the angle was hot.  And I am excited to see the match.

However, I fear that it won't be very good at all.

Even from an entertainment standpoint.

I've seen the Rock's act so many times...and Hogan's even more.

I hope it turns out to be entertaining...but I doubt it will entertain me.

With all the attention this match is going to get and so much riding on this angle, I'm fairly positive the WWF is going to do everything possible to make this match a success and take their time in booking the match to perfection.

I'm actually fairly optimistic that they will produce a decent match. The heat these two will get I think will at least make it watchable. Both wrestlers simply know how to get the crowd involved and keep them involved throughout a match. It won't be pretty and there isn't going to be much technical or high flying moves but I believe these two will be able to tell a great story in the ring. It'll be something like Hogan-Warrior at WM6 with a lot of drama, a lot of intensity, and a very hot crowd.

they failed with the invasion. they failed with the Austin heel turn. Why would this angle be different? As for the match, what's perfection? An NWO interference screwjob? Rocky fighting off the entire NWO? A bunchof overbooked crap with some nonsensical screwjob? The match will suck balls and the WWF will receive a huge backlash (not the ppv) when the marks realize that they don't want Hogan around again!

I'm sorry, but your logic is pretty flawed here. Just because they've had a bad run of angles, they shouldn't try another one. By that logic, they shouldn't try ANY angles.

I don't like the Rock, so the I ate the beatdown up with a spoon. As far as people being sheep, nobody told me to like what I saw, but I was yelling at the tv for the first time in a long time. I enjoyed that segment thoroughly. The whole ambulance thing was a bit much, but when you think about how ineffective a shot to the back of a head with a weapon has become in the wrestling world, maybe they needed to have something a little ridicuolous happen to justify the Rock being out for any extended period of time. The bottom line is, if you like something, enjoy it. Don't wait to see what everybody else thinks about it.

Personally, I don't like either Rock or Hogan, so the RAW segment did very little for me. All this bluster about the "two biggest stars in the business colliding" is bullshit to me because I view Austin as the biggest WWF star instead of Rocky.

Oh well, personal biases are a bitch, aren't they?

No, they have had such a pathetic writing crew that until SMH is no longer the head  writer I don't have faith that the WWF will be able to build this up and give a good payoff because they've failed with every other angle that SMH has overseen. As Benoit once said "Prove me wrong!"

I want to be entertained. I want good wrestling matches. The WWF in the past has been able to deliver that consistently. Last year, even when the stories sucked, alot of the wrestling rocked! Lately, the stories and the wrestling and have sucked. That's a bad thing. And Rock-Hogan might be compelling (until the NWO beatdowns and spraypaint get old) but after the match sucks, people will turn away in droves just like they did to WCW.

I find it hilarious that someone who ends their post with "Wake me up when Benoit returns" has the audacity to call anyone else sheep.

WHAT THE FUCK!!!!????

Excuse me but what the fuck are you talking about?

I'm a sheep for liking benoit!?

If liking benoit made you a sheep he'd be in the rock's position right now.

Yeah, i'm a sheep for giving a shit about actually seeing a decent, let alone brilliant match that benoit would put on instead of sitting through a FUCKING TWENTY MINUTE segment of the CROCK and hogan fucking verbally shitting for twenty minutes where in that time we easily could have had...ya know...a FUCKING match or three.

I bet you marked out like the little bitch you are during that whole hogan/rock segment.

WELL, i've said my peace....oh wait...FUCK YOU AND YOUR AND ALL YOUR FUCKING ROCK-LOVING FAGGOTS!!!

DIE ROCKY DIE

AND...

Wake me up when benoit returns.

wow, i never thought id agree with Ihatesmarksandmarks, but he is totally right.  i like rock, he is an awesome promo, and is more than watchable in the ring.  and while liking benoit doesnt make you a sheep, categorically labelling all rock fans "faggots" is a pretty pathetic thing to do, and doesnt really prove *any* of your points.  i loved the rock + hogan's promo, though the only part which i think spoiled it was the endless replays of the ambulance being rammed.  apart from that, it was very good and exciting television.

If you want to watch pure wrestling, go watch puro. I want the chairs. I want the long promos.  I want the trucks smashing into amublances.  I want the cheap attempts at drama.  I WANT TO BE ENTERTAINED.  If I gave so much of a shit about "pure wrestling," then I'd go to greece or japan.  I want a show. I want the flashy lights, I want the HBK attitudes, I want Rock vs Hogan.  If you want a well thought out long drawn out dramatic match, either watch 1989, or watch puro. Otherwise, just sit back and enjoy a fucking show

i marked out like a bitch too, and see one of the other threads for the reasons i love sports entertainment.  and while i dont necessarily like "pure" wrestling as you call it, i do enjoy good north american wrestling ala benoit and austin, etc, and while i dont expect hour long matches, a 15 min main event on raw and smackdown isnt too much is it, because that would make me really happy, that is *one* of the reasons why i enjoyed raw so much last night.  i read somewhere that wrestling is no longer wrestling involving soap opera, but rather a soap opera involving wrestling.  that is so true.

I do watch puro and I enjoy it very much but puro has its crap as well..

"If you want a well thought out long drawn out dramatic match, either watch 1989, or watch puro. Otherwise, just sit back and enjoy a fucking show"

Why can't I watch a long drawn out well-worked match in the WWF. they have given me this in the last two years (benoit-Austin, Austin-Angle, HHH-Rock Ironman) so they are certainly capable of good wrestling.

If I don't enjoy the fucking show, then isn't the smarks forum the perfect place to voice my displeasure as well as express ideas that I feel will give me more entertainment. I don't have to expect poor writing, poor wrestling, poor angles if I'm buying their merchandise, PPVs etc. I'm a consumer of their product and can make my view known.

Now that I know what you like about wrestling, I really don't care to discuss wrestling with you personally. We have different views on wrestling, so be it.

Dude you just dont get it.

Its not just about the wrestling.  And that seems to be all anybody cares about here. They put on the BEST PROMO I have seen since the original nWo and DX.  And if you think the Rock and Sock connection is better, "I dont care to discuss wrestling with you" either.  I want a show.  Yeah, I appretiate a good match, I love when they have them.  But fantastic promos and storylines really pull the show together.  You could go have Austin and Benoit go out and have a great match, but if theres no story behind it, nobody will care.  Its the biggest angle the WWF has had to deal with, so they'll give it 40 minutes of show.  And its WORTH 40 minutes of the show. Its their big spot for wrestlemania, thats what they want to sell Wrestlemania as.  You like RVD, great.  You like Jericho, great.  But if they dont get 40 minutes too, oh well.  This is THE Rock and Hulk Fucking Hogan.  If anybody in wrestling deserves 40 minutes, its these two.  THE CROWD DIDNT GIVE THEM A CHANCE TO TALK, THEY WERE IN A CONSTANT STATE OF POPPING FOR THEM.  It was a great show.  JR and King are the two dumbest fucking announcers ever, and I'll agree that was pointless, but to be mad that the biggest angle is getting the most airtime is purely retarded

actually my major gripe for raw was the there were *too many* promos.  the attention which was given to the austin arrest was huge at the start of the show, but was then forgotten once rock was attacked.  perhaps they could have delayed the austin story to smackdown in order to spread out the major happenings, because that austin-angle skit is pointless now, because it was immediately forgotten following the rock-hogan promo.  now if they had put a match there, i think it would have benefitted somebody more.  while it would have been ultimately forgotten, it could have been used to give the midcard some more airtime, and ultimately get them over.

i agree the austin segment at the beginning was horrible, weve seen it before and a match would certianly serve a purpose.....i also felt the hogan segment should have been saved for the end as it dragged down the card and overshadowed a solid match between angle and HHH

there would be more "shock effect" had they just ended the show with hogan smashing the ambulence....we also wouldnt have to listen to JR blabber about how much of a "tragedy" this is
