Guest Ironman Posted July 29, 2002 Report Posted July 29, 2002 What's the difference between: Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Submission Wrestling, and Submission Grappling? I get them mixed up and can't remember which ones are the same. That's the difference in Gracie and Brazilian in technique? I used to grapple around with some friends to took BJJ (I think it was) and learned some stuff, but never went out for any art.
Guest razazteca Posted July 29, 2002 Report Posted July 29, 2002 Helo Gracie is the founder of the Gracie stlye of Jui Jitsu which was invented during the 40's other than that I know very little of the differences. I think submission grappling and submission wrestling are just hybrid mixed fighting styles that evolved out of people having to find a way to counter BJJ. Such as Mark Coleman's "Hammer House" style of Ground and Pound. Which is basically former NCAA collegaite freestyle or greco roman wrestling with power punching and submissions.....the Neck Crank, Keylock holds, armbars, legbars, chokes. well that is my opinion
Guest Ironman Posted July 30, 2002 Report Posted July 30, 2002 Carlos Gracie started the GJJ and taught it to Helios. It dates back beyond the 20's in Brazil. That's all I know of that. Thanks for the info though. That pretty much answers it.
Guest HungryJack Posted July 30, 2002 Report Posted July 30, 2002 Actually , the art of Jiu-Jitsu originated in Japan . some guy named Count Koma taught it to Helio, who taught the art to his 7 sons(Rorion,Relson,Rickson,Royce,Royler,Rolker,and Robin) He also taught it to a good part of the 21 sons of his brother Carlos. Some of Carlos' sons, such as Carlson, Robson , Rolls ,and Carlos Jr. excelled and founded JiuJitsu schools. Dozens of Black belts have been graduated by the current president of the BJJ Confederation and Carlos Gracie Jr. These include Renzo, Ryan ,Ralph, which are Robson's sons, and their cousins Rigan ,Jean Jacques, Carlos, Jony and Roger , the Machado bothers. This is but part of the storied tradition of BJJ ,basically just the origins. You can read about it in the Summer 2002 issue of FIGHTSPORT Magazine. Good Stuff. EDIT : In conclusion , BJJ = GJJ . Same thing . It all came from Gracies.
Guest HungryJack Posted July 30, 2002 Report Posted July 30, 2002 you DO of course realize Marco Ruas is not a Jiu-Jitsu fighter...... He's a Luta Livre fighter ,which were the main rivals of JiuJitsu in the early 90's due to JiuJitsu lacking a strong name...
