Video Tape Question

Well right now I have RR 98, WM 98, SmSlam 98. I need to grab KOR (for Taker/Mankind), and Survivor Series too (Rock turning was great, though I'm reluctant to buy it because I think I have it on tape somewhere).

'98 was a lot better than I gave it credit for at the time.

Now I know Austin/Michaels and the Casket Match have no chance, but what's everyones take on the '98 MOTY?

I bought the Classic 5 Box Set.

My MOTY is

Rock v. HHH ladder and Austin v. Dude OTE

Eh.... putting Foley in a MOTY, I'd have to think long and hard about not including HIAC, but Austin/Dude Love was a damn good match. More match than the shock of HIAC, I'd probably take that match over Rock/HHH, though I thought that was one of the last great Ladder Matches.

See, the thing is, Bret was still world-class in '96, but he left after WM and didn't come back until Survivor Series, which is a very large portion of the year. Most of the Kliq crap is better off being forgotten, believe it or not.

Anyway, my '96 picks would have to go towards Foley/Michaels (deffinately an exceptionaly match, and Michaels' best of the year), and Austin/Bret, which I found better than the re-match. Also, I have to mention Misterio Vs. Ultimo/Ultimate Dragon match from WWIII, which doesn't seem to get much love from anyone, despite being anything Michaels did that year (I'm not bitter, by the way, just angry).

Never saw Benoit/Malenko. That was the one with the wretched crowd of bikers, right? I have to see that one...

Yea- the match is awesome but the crowd just kills it. My rankings-

96-

1.Bret v. SCSA

2.Foley v. HBK

3.Benoit v. Deam

97-

1.Bret v. SCSA

2.HBK v. Taker

3.Hart Foundation v. SCSA/LOD/Shamrock/Dust

98-

1.Rock v. HHH

2.Dude v. SCSA

3.DDP v. Benoit

Man I wish I saw more WCW Pay Per Views...

All I have are GAB '98 (Fit Finlay is great), and BAtB '98 (yay, Rodzilla *zzzzzz*)

Taker/Foley gets discarded immediately for not being a match, IMHO.

Deffinately not Austin/Michaels, which was just a crippled Michaels not knowing how to work a match without scorching his back, and therefor, doing nothing good. This was post-neck injury Austin, too, who wasn't ready to carry him at that point.

All in all, '98 was a pretty horrible year for great match in the WWE, when it all comes down to it. I mean, Austin/Dude Love, when stripped down to just the wrestling part, was simply a fun brawl and not much else. Yeah yeah "defined the WWF style from then on" blah blah blah "revolutionized wrestling" yada yada yada, it doesn't hold up that well.

Shit, that leaves WCW, and they weren't exactly setting the world on fire either...umm...lots of the usual Cruiserweight stuff, but nothing on the levle we had seen before...the Benoit/Booker series was nice, but never quite reached the high end levle... umm... I suppose....Benoit/Raven? Yeah, I guess that would be my choice.

I always thought that Malenko/Dragon from Starcade 96 was a MOTYC. But from what I've seen from that year, I would go with Mankind and Michaels at Mind Games.

Never saw it. I could see it being a MOTYC if they stuck to the NJ Junior style that Ultimo new best. I'm intrigued, so I think I'll track it down.

As it stands, I still think Austin/Hart gets the duke for '96. Bret and Austin may have been the most ideal pairing one could possibly think of in 1996.

Show was never released on commercial tape

The show WAS released on Coliseum Video, it is just extremely rare. I paid $300 for it and then turned around and sold it on eBay for upwards of $500.

That match is like so much worse than you would expect with the stupid overtime periods breaking the flow of the entire match (if you want to have a 30 minute match - have a 30 minute match without the built in breaks in the action). The ending sequence with a school boy and Woman-fearence is entirely underwhelming as well.

Yeah, that does sound pretty damn dissapointing, and I'm sure the crowd didn't help. I heard they had a match on Nitro in '98 that was better.

I thought the match was good- Hog Wild also has a good Dragon-Rey match and a kickass Eddy-Flair match

My 1996 NA MOTY was Michaels-Foley. But my overall MOTY was of course Misawa/Akiyama vs. Kawada/Taue 12/6/96. Nothing the WWF has ever done or will ever do can top this.

My 1997 NA MOTY was also Rey-Eddy. And the person who said "1.20.97" I'm sure was referring to Misawa vs. Kobashi--the 1997 MOTY.

Hmm...I seem to be the only one who favors Hart/Austin over Michaels/Foley for '96. Ah well.

You're not the only one. That match, though incredibly good, suffered from not having a finish.

I like Hart v. Austin better as well Ricky

Misawa Vs Kobashi?

I thought that was one of the most overated matches ever. Don't get me wrong, its an awesome match, but some have called it the best match ever, which seems nuts to me.

Oh, and I prefered Austin/Bret too.

Guest RickyChosyu

Well, it appears I was quite wrong. Nice suprise there.

And while I highly disagree with 1/97 being the greatest match of all time, I think it probably was the MOTY for 1997.

Shawn/Bulldog from KOTR 96 and Diesl/Shawn from IYH Good Friends, Better Enemies are NOT on the Best of 1996 tape, if you're talking about the offical release. It does have Michaels/Mankind, though it's probably clipped.

It also contains...

Bret Hart vs Undertaker, Royal Rumble (crap)

Bret Hart vs Diesel, Steel Cage, Feb IYH (not much better)

Ahmed Johnson vs Goldust, KOTR 96 (it's Ahmed. Crap)

Steve Austin vs Marc Mero, KOTR 96 (great match)

Actually, reading this review, it's all clipped...

WWF 1996 Match of The Year:

Shawn Michaels vs. Davey Boy Smith (KOTR)

1997 MOTY:

Bret Hart Vs. Steve Austin (WM 13) (i didnt watch WWF in 1997 from april-september so those months i exlude by default)

1998 MOTY:

Uh...Dude love vs. Stone Cold (OTE 98) because its the only ME I actually liked a lot. HIAC sucked on a wrestling stand point, since UT had a broken ankle and Mankind had just fallen off the cell TWICe.

1999: MOTY:

Mankind Vs. The Rock (RR) Just because.

2000 MOTY:

Angle Vs. Jericho Vs. Benoit (WM 2000)

As much as I love DBS- Bret v. Austin and some WCW Stuff was better

Angle v. Benoit v. Jericho???? That wasn't even the best match at WM.

I agree, i could think of loads of matches better than that from 2000, but, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

HBK vs Mankind? Are we talking about In Your House: Mind Games? Amazing match, if we are.

While I haven't seen Bulldog/Michaels in a while, I remember enjoying Foley/Michaels more.

I'm not sure if the rest of your picks are just NA, or just WWF, but for '99 Benoit/Malenko Vs. Raven/Saturn was an easy pick for NA MOTY, and better than anything the WWF pulled off. As for 2000, the Foley/Trips Street Fight blew away anything from Wrestlemania that year.

My personal picks...

1996 - Mankind/HBK (mind Games)

1997 - Austin/Bret (WM 13)

1998 - Dude Love/Austin (Over the Edge)

1999 - Hardys vs Edge and Christian (No Mercy)

2000 - Rock vs HHH, Iron Man match (Judgment Day)

Well, I cant quite remember all of '99... so I'm gonna leave that one blank, but I think I'd have to go with

1996: Shawn Michaels / Mankind -Mind Games-

1997: Bret Hart / Stone Cold -WrestleMania13-

1998: Dude Love / Stone Cold -Over the Edge-

1999:

2000: Triple H / Cactus Jack -Royal Rumble- (many will disagree, but I thought it was damn good, better than their HIAC match)

Mick Foley seems to show up all the time.... and Caliban's pick of Rock/Foley... not a bad choice, I just dont remember enough of '99
