Movies that critics panned..

Before hip-hop went mainstream, critics used to pan pretty much any Black movie that came out. I remember reading bad reviews for Boyz in Tha Hood, Menace II Society, and some other movies that ended up being really good. I guess they just didn't "get it."

actually, i believe it was with 'boyz n tha hood' that hip-hop movies started being accepted, since john singleton got an oscar nomination for it.

 

and leonard maltin is a retard. he gave 'memento' *1/2, i don't trust his taste at all. and how reputable can a critic who works for 'entertainment tonight' be?

Memento was not only a great film, but deserved a Best Picture Oscar nomination. I say that because it is a great deal better than that piece of shit "Gosford Park" (thank you, Altman, for RAPING ME out of the 20 bucks it cost to take myself & my date to your god-awful fim). So if "Park" can get in there, Memento deserved one too.

 

Another really good movie I enjoy but that's gotten poor-to-just-average reviews is "Dark City". Came out in 1998, starring Rufus Sewell, William Hurt, Keifer Sutherland & Jennifer Connolly. Really, really great sci-fi flick with a noir feel. It got fairly panned by critics, except for Roger Ebert who proclaimed it to be one of the 10 best films of the year and has subsequently provided a rather nice commentary track to the DVD.

Oh I agree that Maltin has lost his fucking mind. He gave Spider Man **1/2 yet he gave X Men ***. I think everyone pretty much found Spidey to be a bit better. Only gave Attack of the Clones ** yet gave the piece of shit Phantom Menace ***. Only gave Training Day ** as well.

 

With Memento, I dunno. I can see why he might dislike it, since it is a gimmicky movie that you will either love or hate.

I like X-Men a hell of a lot better.

 

As for the topic, I really liked "The Ninth Gate" which I never saw a good review of. I found it to be a really good movie with only a few minor faults.

Actually, it didn't get "panned" by the critics at all. It received a 74% rating at Rotten Tomatoes.

 

It didn't do very well financially, but the critics loved it.

Well i'm sure most of the movies i like got ripped apart by critics as that's the price of being a horror movie fan.

 

I liked Ghost of Mars which i believe got ripped apart by everyone except Ebert. Ebert recognized it as being a straight b movie that wasn't trying to be something great. I'm not sure why i liked it, but it was just a fun little movie that didn't take it self serious.

 

My friends i watched it with didn't agree with me as far as liking it. However they know me and my movies so it's their fault for letting me pick.

Vanilla Sky was an awesome movie, and it got panned quite a bit. Mallrats too.

 

Personally, I found Death to Smoochey to be a hilarious movie. I'm pretty sure that panned, too.

I thought Kung Pow was horrible. There were a few lines and gags that were good but it would have been better if it was a 30 minute mini movie like all those Thumb movies Steve Oderkerk(sp?) did.

I just really dug all the goofy voice overs and stuff. I'm just a big fan of stupid humor movies....when they're done right. Plus I like the idea of taking an old 70's kung fu movie and redoing the sound and voices.

 

It's one of those movies you either like or hate so I can understand if you didn't like it.

I liked Tobe Hooper's Crocodile, whereas most other reviews I have read of that film include the phrase "more proof that Texas Chainsaw Massacre was a fluke" or some variation...

Also, I just saw Nurse Betty today, despite the recommendations of everyone NOT to. I actually liked it a lot... Renee Zelweger (can you believe she's one of my favorite actresses and I STILL can't spell her name?) is just so sweet in that movie, you almost want to cry at how poorly she gets treated. I think the ending was B.S. though.

Nurse Betty got a very respectable 80% at Rotten Tomatoes, and the NY Times's reviewer said "It is easily the finest American comedy since David O. Russell's "Flirting With Disaster," another road movie that never ran out of poignantly funny surprises." A lot of people here seem to hate it, though.

 

Someone already mentioned The Adventures of Ford Fairlaine (Andrew Dice Clay's movie), which was panned by every critic on earth, but I enjoyed it a LOT.

For all you BASEketball marks out there, you know NOTHING about Trey Parker and Matt Stone, if you've never seen CANNIBAL! The Musical. It was their first movie, made in conjunction with Troma, makers of Toxic Avenger, Rabid Grannies, Killer Condom, Tromeo and Juliet, etc. I've NEVER laughed at a movie so hard as the first time I saw Cannibal...oh my god.

 

It was also called "Unwatchable" By Showtime.

In regards to Ford Fairlane, I think that movie was hated by critics because it came out at exactly the wrong time. By late 1990 political correctness was starting to sweep the nation and Clay's style of humor was a target of every kind of women's group, gay group, racial group you can think of.

 

If the movie had been made in say 1988 or so I think it would have made more money and been better received by critics. Also, by 1990 the whole hair band thing was starting to wane, so the movie's take on cheesy 80s hair bands was a bit dated by the time it came out.

 

That said, it's a really cool movie. It's a shame Dice got essentially blacklisted from being in another major movie. Unless you call Brain Smasher a major movie.

Kull the Conqueror ain't no Goodfellas, and Cabin Boy isn't a work of genius or anything, but I can accept for what they are. Something that entertains me.
