PROMO: by "Grand Slam" Mark Stevens

"Hey Slugger, you've got a phone call."

Mark Stevens, dressed in a sweatshirt and sweatpants, sits up on the couch, awoken from a mid-afternoon nap by his wife Lynn.

"A phone call?" He looks at his watch. "Is it the office?"

"Don't think so, I forgot to ask who it was." She hold the cordless phone out to him. In the background, a small child can be heard crying.

"Thanks Lynn." Mark takes the phone from his wife and holds it up to his ear...

"Hello?... Oh, its you... what the hell do you want? Yeah... yeah... I've noticed. Look, Edwin's going through a lot, he knows I'm here if he needs to talk. I'm not sure its any of your business one way or the other... uh-huh... no, but I... Who? You're kidding, right?... Of course he's my friend! So he retired me, big deal, water under the bridge as far as I am concerned... of course I'm sure about that... What are you getting at?"

There is a long pause as Mark listens quietly to the voice on the other end of the line. His face slowly shifts from a look of annoyance, to interest, to the briefest of smiles, then finally to a look of determination.

"Fine... fine... I'll see you there. Sloopy's? What kind of a name is that for a bar? Whatever... bye..."

Mark Stevens drops the phone on the end table, then drops his head, as if the weight of the world just landed on his shoulders. He rubs his face in both hands, then looks up again, out his front window at the sunny Nebraska afternoon. Beyond the front lawn, there is a small group of children playing, throwing a brown and tattered baseball back and forth in a spirited game of pickle. Mark Stevens takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly.

From behind, Lynn walks back into the room, their son Chris in her arms sleeping the deep, secure sleep that only a child can. "What's wrong Mark?"

"A friend needs my help Lynn. I need to get packed." The former world champion stands up and walks towards the stairs leading to the second level. He places his foot on the first stair and looks back at his wife...

"I've got a plane to catch..."

"To where?"

He thinks for a second, then offers up a wry smile. "Halfway to Heaven and just a mile out of Hell, and I feel like I'm comin' home."

As Mark runs up the steps, Lynn chuckles and says quietly to her son "Life lesson thirty-two. When your father is upset, he quotes Springsteen." She sighs and turns back to the living room.
