Guest Jobber of the Week Posted August 17, 2002 Report Posted August 17, 2002 Jerry Lawler has provided me with many laughs during Hart matches but the guy is losing his touch. I prefer listening to freakin' DUSTY RHODES over his current stuff. Can I mention something quickly here? * WCW vs WWF: Lawler is giggling and putting over Booker T's catchphrases (a good thing) but also seems to be more partial to WCW than the WWF (a bad thing.) HEL-LO!? This is WCW. This is supposed to be like your mortal enemy. Cmon for chrissakes. * The NWO enters: Lawler goes on about how they can't be bad guys at first, and later keeps putting over Nash and X-Pac. No wonder the gimmick goes nowhere. * The Un-Americans debut: Lawler goes on a Republican-ized rant about all the charity money and work the US does to other nations and how we're the best country in the world and if you don't like it get out and blah blah blah. JR agrees with this right-wing fantasy. Why in the hell was Jerry Lawler unable to put over WCW or the NWO as heels so heel-ish that even he didn't approve of them? Yet he's doing this for the UnAmericans? Isn't there something a little wrong here? I'm starting to join the "fire him" crowd.
Chunk Posted August 17, 2002 Report Posted August 17, 2002 Being English, the whoel un-american angle has made me laugh. We hear JR's patriotism (fair enough) but i find it a little ironic that whilst telling us that the un-americans are wrong, he only shows us american arrogance by demanding to be respected simply because he is american! in the words of a certain superhero: wasupwivdat!? ChUnK!
Guest Downhome Posted August 17, 2002 Report Posted August 17, 2002 I hate Jerry Lawler's character in WWE period, everything about it from top to bottom. He is only good when he is playing a heel color man if you ask me, and for the past good while, he has not been that. He just comes across to me as a horny, sick, non-attentive, ass. Now that I think about it, is there ANY guys in wrestling that play the "heel" in the booth? I mean really, what happend to the days of having a Henan praising all the heels do, and having a Monsoon praising the faces, and then having the two go back and forth about that? Screw Lawler, I'm sick of him and wouldn't complain one bit if I turned on RAW and he wasn't there, and if I never heard him call a match again. It's sad really, Lawler/Ross used to be the best duo in wrestling, but now, hell, they are up there as the worse in my view.
Guest BigTim2002 Posted August 17, 2002 Report Posted August 17, 2002 Jerry: PUPPIES! PUPPIES! Dusty: THEY BE CLUBBERIN, TONY!, I'D LIKE TO ILLITERATE IF YOU WEEEEEEL. I rest my case.
Guest CanadianChick Posted August 17, 2002 Report Posted August 17, 2002 I have said this once, and I'll say it again, the problem is that Lawler isn't a heel commentator. The only "heelish" thing he does is suck up to Bischoff.
Guest Downhome Posted August 17, 2002 Report Posted August 17, 2002 I'd much rather have a duo of Rhodes/Henan/Shavonie over Ross/JR right now, seriously. *goes back to watching WCW tapes*
Chunk Posted August 17, 2002 Report Posted August 17, 2002 I'd personally like to see heyman back in the commenating booth, if not on raw then on smackdown. I know he's with Brock now, but during his brief spell as a commentator in the wwe/wwf (which included a wrestlemaina) he was good and played the heel well. I say bring back Paul 'E' ! ChUnK!

I agree 100%. Heyman was a great counter for J.R and argued with him with good points. Most importantly, he put over the great action in the ring.
Guest The Electrifyer Posted August 17, 2002 Report Posted August 17, 2002 Yeah, Heyman was awesome. I hope they can find a spot for Heyman to comentate at on a regular basis. The guy was awesome, he would out smart JR at times and Ross was clearly un-able to comeback Heyman's remarks.
Guest PlatypusFool Posted August 17, 2002 Report Posted August 17, 2002 Heyman was easily the best commentator that WWE has had for many, many years. His stuff was hilarious!
Guest Downhome Posted August 17, 2002 Report Posted August 17, 2002 Plus he *gasp* put over the heels!
Chunk Posted August 17, 2002 Report Posted August 17, 2002 yep, i also remember a huge on screen arguement between the two about the action that had just happened. Can you remember what that was about, because that is just why Paul should be brought back. It was both believeable, entertaining and promoted the action well! ChUnK!
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted August 17, 2002 Report Posted August 17, 2002 Lawler shows signs of brilliance (watch the Ironman match from WM 12, Lawler CARRIES the broadcast) and i've noticed on some raws when JR seems 'out of it' or just unmotivated that Lawler is there to point out something to get him back into it... Which really makes me not hate him... Not to say that I like him, I liked Heyman MUCH more, but Lawler isn't a complete moron...If you weel...

How long ago was that, almost 7 years ago now? Yes, he used to be great at his job, but he has just been on a solid downhill stride, for quite some time now.
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted August 17, 2002 Report Posted August 17, 2002 You know, sometimes I just wonder if the Wwf forces its commentators to be dumb. I hate Lawlers take on womens wrestling (he TOTALLY ruined the Victoria/Trish match), and he rarely ever offers anything important to a match... I totally agree. But it is those 'signs of brilliance' that just makes me wonder if he willingly holds back and if he is not a genuinely bad announcer.

But it is those 'signs of brilliance' that just makes me wonder if he willingly holds back and if he is not a genuinely bad announcer. Oh yeah, I totally agree with you. I'm sure he isn't just genuinely bad, I know that can't be true. He is just playing a character, a character that WWE has molded him into now, and it just sucks. The fans react to it, and many of the casual fans actually enjoy his antics, I know many that personally love it and find it to be funny and good TV. I know he still has it, because I have heard him annouce for matches on MCW I think it is, something like that. Everywhere else, Lawler is a 100% different person, it's scarry really. It's almost like there are TWO Lawlers!
Guest Downhome Posted August 17, 2002 Report Posted August 17, 2002 By the way, I look at Lawler's current charater just as I do many of the other things from the "Attitude Era"... ...leave it in the past, please, with DX, the gangs, and the old women giving birth to hands.
Guest Dangerous A Posted August 17, 2002 Report Posted August 17, 2002 I'm with Downhome and Rudo. The King's character is a relic from the "attitude" days and needs to go something fierce. But I have more hatred in my heart for the man than these guys do. JERRY LAWLER CAN GO TO HELL! FUCK HIM!

Guest Rob Van Dam Posted August 18, 2002 Report Posted August 18, 2002 * WCW vs WWF: Lawler is giggling and putting over Booker T's catchphrases (a good thing) but also seems to be more partial to WCW than the WWF (a bad thing.) Guest benoitrules2000 Posted August 18, 2002 Report Posted August 18, 2002 good point. He left after wrestlemania and then came back immediately after survivor series so as crap as he is, you can't blame the fucked invasion angle on him. That angle started brilliantly but i hated the "alliance" idea and it went downhill from there.
Guest Raven_Effect01 Posted August 18, 2002 Report Posted August 18, 2002 He left after wrestlemania and then came back immediately after survivor series so as crap as he is, you can't blame the fucked invasion angle on him. Didn't Lawler leave BEFORE Wrestlemania last year? If I remember correctly, I think he left two days or a week from that Tuesday after the No Way Out '01 PPV when the news broke that Lawler and The Kat were gone from WWE, which eventually lead to Heyman taking over as the new heel commentator when Heyman, at the time, still owned ECW, which was about to go bankrupt.
Guest Your Olympic Hero Posted August 18, 2002 Report Posted August 18, 2002 The only thing I didn't like about Heyman is his shameless putting over of Rhyno. THE MANBEAST FROM THE MEAN STREETS OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN! GORE GORE GORE!!
Guest NazMistry Posted August 18, 2002 Report Posted August 18, 2002 Heyman was great, he made the Austin/Rocky match at Wrestlemania 17 so much better.
Guest the 1inch punch Posted August 18, 2002 Report Posted August 18, 2002 Just listen to Heymen and Ross during Survivor Series, it is absolute GOLD, as all they do is take potshots at each other all night, also, their phenomanal arguement during Raven/Saturn at Unforgiven 2001

ChUnK! I totally agree on this point. I cannot stand Jim Ross harping on every bloody week about the Un-Americans being "bastards", Christ, SHUT THE HELL UP JIM! I also don't like the way the guy goes on about how the fans in England don't like William Regal 'cause, in the wise word's of Ross, "he's a pompous ass!". Hello, William Regal is a big fan favourite here in the UK why do they have to keep making him a hell when he comes over for UK PPV's? The peole in the UK want to cheer Regal not boo him! And I also agree with you other point, bring back Paul Heyman to the announce table and get rid of Lawler. I just love the way Heyman would wind up Ross all the time.
Guest Jobber of the Week Posted August 19, 2002 Report Posted August 19, 2002 I hate Jerry Lawler's character in WWE period, everything about it from top to bottom. He is only good when he is playing a heel color man if you ask me, and for the past good while, he has not been that. He USED to be good. Like, 2 years ago. I was just listening to the HHH/Cactus streetfight clips: JR: Cactus Jack has a barbed wire 2x4! Lawler: Ref! Get that out of the ring! (HHH low blows, takes 2x4) JR: And now Hunter has it! Lawler: USE IT! But it all has gone downhill recently. EDIT: You're right about Lawler coming back after SSeries. I must have imagined something. Oh well. As for JR and the UnAmericans, hopefully it will kill the gang faster before we go back to mad amounts of stables and more 80s angles (cmon guys, stupid overblown patriotism have been going on since the dawn of time.)
