Ric Flair Compilation

Recommended Posts

Guest MideonMark

I'm thinking about getting a Ric Flair compilation tape from http://strongstyletapes.com. The matches on the tape are:

NWA Title-vs Ricky Steamboat(ChiTown Rumble)

NWA Title-vs Ricky Steamboat(Wrestlewar)

NWA Title(I Quit)-vs Terry Funk

Wargames-Flair/Windham/Vicious/Zbyszko vs Sting/Pillman/Steiners

NWA Title-vs Terry Funk(doesnt say when this is from)

Wargames-Flair/AA/Tully/Luger/JJ Dillon vs Dusty/Road Warriors/Koloff/Ellering

NWA Title 2/3 falls-vs Steamboat

NWA Title(Cage)-vs Luger

WCW Title-vs Steamboat

WCW Title-vs Vader

The only match Ive seen on the list is Flair vs Vader, so before I buy the tape, can anyone give me their star ratings for each match. Also its an 8 hour tape for £16, is the tape worth it?(I would imagine it is)

You can't go wrong here.

the worst match on the tape is his match with Vader...

and that one has the best emotional payoff.

If you're not really into classic NWA, that tape will get you into it. Flair/Funk's I quit match gets better every time I watch it. Flair/Steamboat produces an automatic minimum ****1/2 knee-jerk reflex. Worst match on the tape is Flair/Loser, IMO, but I hate Lex Loser with an undying passion and always have. Still a great match though.

Flair and Funk had two high profile matches in 1989. One was the I Quit match at Clash of the Champions IX and the other was a straight up match at the Great American Bash. It's probably the I Quit match which is *****, but the other one is around ****1/2. All those matches on that tape are the cream of Flair, buy it yesterday and send me a copy.

Oh come on the I Quit match sucks ass, well about as much ass as a Flair match can suck. I have no idea why that match is deemed a classic. Flair fucking no sells a piledriver on concrete, after supposedly having his neck broken by a piledriver on a just table. The match is sloppy, the brawling is weak, and Flair no sells most of Funk's offense.

The Bash match is stiffer, bloodier, and has a hell of alot more selling. Easily ****1/2. But the I Quit match is no where in that league. OVERRATED!

The rest of the tape is great though. It has everything but Flair/Windham.

IF you can find the Worldwide special (That being the Windham/Flair ***** 45-minute match, a match that took up the entire show), and switch that in for either the Funk/Flair I Quit or the Flair/Vader match, then you'll have (count em up) at least 8 GUARANTEED ***** matches on that tape. Wow.

The I quit match was strong. The reason their is no blood because TBS put a ban. Would the nmatch have been better if their were blood yes. Both matches were fantastic.I felt the first match was good but some of the selling was goofy. The I quit match was stiff as hell with incredible selling.

After reading this topic, I busted out my old tape and watched the match for the first time in a year. Funk was awesome, and he did ditch the goofy selling of the first match. Even thought I loved how he sold the piledriver in the first match.

Still I think the Bash match is much superior.

The second match just didn't have the tension and the drama of the first match. Flair's worked injury was sold to the point that if he was to take another piledriver his career was over. And everytime Funk attempted the move the crowd would shit their pants. Flair getting vengance by working over Funk's neck was sweet, the match also featured one of the greatest ending sequences in wrestling history.

However in the second match, Flair not only took a piledriver he took one on the concrete floor. In the first match Flair's neck was sold to be hanging by a thread, but Flair just brushes it off and does a superhero comeback. I know he was playing the face, but leave that comeback stuff to Hogan and Sting, not Flair.

Funk is finished and acting brain damaged the last 5 minutes or so, even though Flair didn't do anything significiant except chop him a few times. Meanwhile Flair is pefectly fine, despite taking two neckbreakers and two piledrivers on a bad neck.

I just don't feel it's as good a match as Bash. And I really don't understand why I always see it listed as ***** and one of the greatest matches of all time. What about the Tully Blanchard/Magnum TA "I Quit" match which kicks the living shit out of Flair/Funk.

Now, Coffin, I agree with you, since that Blanchard/Magnum TA "I Quit" match is the most brutal "I Quit" match ever, untouched by any other match. But for a bloodless brawl, it was quite the fucking match, I'd say.

i just watched both matches, & i agree that the 'i quit' match was pretty underwhelming. even though funk was saying that his leg was breaking, he did look like a bit of a pussy after being in it for maybe a minute. steamboat spent more time in the hold just a few months earlier at the clash match, & came back to win the match (kinda-sorta).

i just kept expecting more vicious stuff to happen. when flair started working the leg, i expected funk to come back with SOMETHING before flair made him quit. you don't end a match with the babyface beating the piss out of the heel for the last 5 minutes, it's just...anticlimactic.

I think you make a good point. Though I believe both matches are great I give the I quit match a 4 1/2* match. GAB 89 was great too and I give that match about 4 1/4*. Both were fun matches to enjoy and have aged well. Now back to the I quit match the reason Flair beat the crap out of Funk for the final 5 minutes because this was going to be Funks last match from all the accumulated injuries to him throughout his career.(kinda funny now) Also both matches went with completely different styles and psychology. Heck even the finish of the first match was anti climatic. Sure they were building to more matches but they could have done that with the angle that followed the 1st match that followed and still had a better finish to the match. I to agree the Magnum Blanchard I quit match from Starcade rocked. Hell they even had the luxury of working in a cage.

I'm really considering buying that tape, but I can't find it on the site. Probably because I'm a total moron. Can I get some help? Please?

The only Flair matches I have from this tape are the:

4-2-89 vs. Steamboat

5-7-89 vs. Steamboat

I'd say ****3/4 and ****1/2 respectively, with a major downward slant on the second one.

Jumbo vs. Tenryu 6-5-89 was still the best match that year. ;)
