Guest TJH Report post Posted August 24, 2002 Only woman sport I really can watch is tennis. I don't see why women get paid equally in tennis: 1: 3 sets as opposed to 5. 2: Any one of them would be destroyed if they competed against the men. Williams sisters, I'm talking about YOU. I'd like to see a dual sex tournament though, all the women would lose in the first round, as long as there weren't any retirements.
Guest alkeiper Report post Posted August 24, 2002 Because in professional sports, you get paid based on how big an attraction you are. Women tennis stars get paid because they draw fans into the arenas to watch them play.
Guest Rabbi_wilson13 Report post Posted August 24, 2002 It really is just a less enjoyable game to watch. Promoting the hell out of a dunk? The funniest thing was the announcer. "Lisa Leslie dunks......and the game continues!" And I really love basketball. The women's national championship was ten times better than the men's this year on terms of quality. Lack of turnovers, shooting, etc. And if you'd take Dawn Staley over some guys in the NBA, than I'm gladly just gonna post her up all day. Even a point guard in the NBA's just going to overpower her with ease.
Guest TJH Report post Posted August 24, 2002 The reason women have higher shooting %'s is because women's basketball is a lot like netball. Secondly, I may be wrong, but I don't think people go to the tennis to see women actually "play" tennis. There is a reason why Anna Kournikova is the most famous female tennis player on earth, and outside the top 10 they are all basically unknowns.

Guys like Isaiah Thomas, Mugsy Bogues, Kevin Johnson, Damon Stodimire, Spudd Webb, Nate Archibald, Marice Cheeks, and the list could go on forever had very good/great NBA careers, all defensive team births and all of them in theory would be posted up and over powered with ease. Its a TEAM game and Dawn knows how to run the point unlike a lot of those out of position undersized 2 guards playing point in the NBA right now.

That does not mean she could run it in the NBA. The difference in talent and skill is so much greater that saying Staley or any player is better than any NBA player is ridiculous. Guest Mad Dog Report post Posted August 28, 2002 I went to a private school which was about division III for ladies basketball. Let's just say that our team had the basics down better than any WNBA team could ever hope for. Even the ABL or whatever the first women's league was called was superior basketball and had a decent following. But for some reason the far inferior WNBA has survived even though I wonder how they make any money.
Guest MD2020 Report post Posted August 28, 2002 The WNBA doesn't make any money. It's been losing money since it started. The only reason is was still around is that it's subsidised by the NBA. Earlier this summer, there was talk of the WBNA players going on strike. I believe they wanted more money, and contracts like the NBA has--the same minimum amounts, etc. I think the NBA executives later thanked them for giving the executives the best laugh ever. Bottom line, Cheryl Miller, Swoopes, Liberman-Kline, and Staley are amoung Basketball great...man or woman. Keep in mind that Staley is nearing 40 now and is nearing retirement, much like most of the WNBA. The leage is made up of women players that spent 10 years playing overseas. The biggest reason is 3 sets as opposed to 5. That is a major, major difference. If you watch the male players matches in Grand Slams compared to the regular tour, there is a huge difference. I dont think its fair, however, to compare the women against the male players. In all athletic sports, men are going to come out on top. Anyway, Venus played against Karsten Braasch (200th ranked player or so) a couple years ago in an exhibition match, and Braasch won 6-1, 6-0. I still think its stupid to compare though. Guest Leena Report post Posted August 30, 2002 About the WNBA, it is a joke. I cant believe that the WNBA is getting a large market of female viewers. Girls I know that play high school basketball, they all agree that its poorly played and not entertaining. The Lisa Leslie slam dunk was a joke. The amount of emphasis on that just shows how "bush league" the WNBA is.
