What is the closest thing to a "smark" magazine?

I am tired of reading all of these magazines that cater straight to the marks. I'm just currious which one is the CLOSEST to being something more for smarks. Would it be PWI? I have been getting The Wrestler, and it's good for the most part, but the way some stuff is written out just drives me crazy!

Sincerely,

I suppose the closest would be Wrestling Digest, but then again there is a small hint of kayfabe with it. I don't know about PWI and its other mags since I haven't read them in about 7 years.

WOW used to be the closest to being a smark mag when it 1st came out years ago.

It had sarastic humor like adventures of the nWo B Team and why Goldberg vs Austin would never happen. it was almost like a publication of scoopthis.com

I loved the adventures of the nWo B-Team. Most of Scoop this' stuff was great.

Hell who could forget Madden and giant hot dog?

Apter mags are mark, although their bio mags are O.K.

Any mag that has a cover that makes a tabloid paper look like the NY Times in comparison, are in general markish.

WOW was very weird when it came out, just to finally be admitting it and all.

i miss being young and reading PWI, the wrestler, and Inside Wrestling..i was so enthralled with them in my youth

Don't know if it available in the U.S.A......

Powerslam magazine here in the U.K. is a really good magazine, it gives equal coverage to Indie/Japan as it does to WWE...Plus the writing style is pretty "smark-ish" and not too kayfabye

Does Raw magazine count? That's pretty insider, as there isn't a whole lot of "markiness" about it. It's a good read, especially about the Austin departure.

i would count Raw, it is a somewhat extra level of working in there as well though

Probably WOW, though I haven't read any magazines in a while.

Actually the "Apter mags" aren't COMPLETELY markish anymore, as they use insider terms and report backstage gossip and such. But then the articles themselves are generally back to mark-mode.

My question is: When did this happen, exactly? Did they say anything about why, for example, they used "Heel" instead of "Rulebreaker" now?

I would have to say Power Slam also. It's a great magazine and has had some great interviews in the past. Shane Douglas, Bret Hart, Mick Foley, Eddie Guerrero and recently Jerry Lynn, in which he said that the WWE was the old boys club were they look after their buddies. However, Power Slam says it comes out the last Thursday of every month but I can find it until the Friday anyone else have this problem?

The only wrestling mags I can find here are:

-Raw, which is pretty smarkish, it doesn't have interviews in character, etc.

-WWE Magazine. Complete mark shit, all interviews done in character, the letters are stupid, etc.

-Inside Wrestling. Alternates between Smark and Mark. Some articles are well thought out, some are just crap.

That's all I can find. I prefer Raw over WOW, because WOW had useless interviews with women I've never heard of, not to mention, Bill Apter was in it.

I add my support for PowerSlam. Some really good features and interviews - Jerry Lynn a couple months ago was awesome.

(sniffle) I miss WOW... I was about to get a subscription when they went out of business.

They use heel mainly because of Cactus Jack and Steve Austin. They break all the rules, and still get mad pop.

I agree. I have been subscribing to WWF/E Magazine since '92. They are still in mark mode which sucks. The only reason I even still subscribe is tradition and they have cool photos and posters most of the time, plus PPV results and photos. The letters are mark to the bone, probably made up by the editor. Tazz' column is pretty funny though. And this month's issue is great cuz Booker T is on the cover with the classic crazy look at hand pose.

I miss the old days when I was a mark and the mag was interesting. I especially enjoyed Heenan's column back in the day.

WOW is dead. PWI is still around. In fact I just bought a PWI issue fo rthe first time in 4 years just for the heck of it. It is the current one, the mid-year report for 2002, and its pretty good actually. It is pretty much smarkish now, except for a few tweaks here and there. One letters even complains that Undertaker shoulda jobbed to RVD for real on the May 20th RAW.

Dang I still can't find the almanac. Haven't got it since '97 since I haven't been able to spot it anywhere.

That's my pitiful attempt at humor. There really is a periodical called Psychology Today. Only a wrestling fan would think that would be a smark magazine. :)
