I always thought standing ovations were usually reserved for proper film festivals where audiences are often more inclined to a vocal thums up/down verdict on the film. I've heard of several instances where controversial or simply unpopular films have been booed or whistled at during festivals. I've never seen a standing ovation at a regular multiplex/mainstream cinema but its happened twice at more of an arthouse venue after "Being John Malkovich" and "The Straight Story".
