The Thing I found stupid was the "Non- WWE-Sanctioned Match" If it wasnt sanctioned why would they Promote it and have it in the wrestling ring witha ref?

WWE: Logic? What's that?

And I can't remember one match aside from Angle over Rey where the right person went over.

Ok, I think differently though. I didn't like seeing Edge go over, but I can understand WHY he went over, I'll leave that one at that. The ending to HBK/HHH was picture perfect, I couldn't write a better ending for it myself. Tage match was fine, the Test/Taker match was fine also. Flair finally got a win, something I haven't seen in fine, and it looks like it is going to build up for Jericho "snaping". Rocky is leaving, and the crowd respons I believe dictated that it was right having Brock win the title, now all they have to do is have Brock turn on Heyman tomorrow night and he's well on his way. Also...

...RVD going over Benoit was the PERFECT thing to do. Not only was it a hell of a match, but am I the ONLY guy that realizes that this means that RVD is now on his way to Smackdown, and more than likely to enter into an actual FEUD with Benoit? I don't know about you, but I'M all for it!

There was some bizarre booking, but not enough to make me hate the PPV... just enough to make me mourn for Jericho.

BPS loves RVD- but is upset when he wins????

Because holding the IC title means you go nowhere fast.

Do I need to go through the list of guys who were in the IC division for so long, then ended up becoming some of the greatest ever?

RVD is already above the IC title though. Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels (a couple I assume you are referring to) used the IC title to establish themselves as singles wrestlers after long careers in teams. RVD is already the number one face in the company who is looking for someone to grab the fans attention. RVD should be in the title hunt now not a few years in the future after he has established himself with the IC title like the others did.

Just because RVD is so over doesn't mean that he should instantly be at the top, that has never been the case. All through WWE history, or rather certain parts of it, the IC division was HOT AS HELL with VERY over guys taking part who were in fact more over than the Main Eventers at the time.

I Hope RVD does the same thing with the IC belt as he did with The TV belt in ECW. I mean the titles in the wwe change soo much and he's one of the only guys who can keep the fans entertained for that long.

I wouldn't mind at all if he kept the IC strap for a while. Not two years mind you, perhaps 6 months to a year. In the meantime, we can really get serious with a Benoit or Jericho push. Because, in the end...

...you can't push ALL of these guys at the same time, and it would be something great for both RVD and the fans if he was to be put into a small program like that, fighting guy after guy, stomping out great matches. Can anyone say Rey/RVD finally?

Wait... is Van Dam definitely on SD! now?

No, but I think it's pretty clear that is what is in the works.

Then, to put it mildly, I'll quote the chat I was in learning of this:

(10:50pm) (Z) Mike: What the hell are you so angry about?

<Mike> Fuck. Fuck.

<Mike> Van Dam's on SmackDown... I don't get Smackdown

(10:50pm) (Z) Ah so... rough.

<Mike> It's painful like you wouldn't believe

(10:50pm) (Thoth) How is Van Dam on Smackdown?

(10:50pm) (Thoth) When did this happen?

(10:51pm) (Z) When he won the IC title.

(10:51pm) (Annie_Eclectic) some weird contract stip

(10:51pm) (Thoth) SHIT!

<Mike> Argh, now I'm going to have to go find Morris and get him to tape SD for me

(10:51pm) (Thoth) Then why the hell do we watch Raw?

<Mike> Bingo

(10:51pm) (Z) Because.

<Mike> And I don't get UPN, either

(10:51pm) (Thoth) Oh... too bad.

<Mike> God dammit WWE, you can fucking burn in hell

(10:52pm) (Z) I figure it's Stephanie's booking. "Oh, and make sure you have all the good talent on MY show."

(10:52pm) (Z) I guess it's supposed to make her look better. Or... something.

(10:52pm) (Annie_Eclectic) ah

(10:52pm) (Annie_Eclectic) that makes sense in a way

(10:53pm) (Annie_Eclectic) the slow kill of Eric Bischoff for being non-WWE

<Mike> No it doesn't

<Mike> It doesn't make sense because it ruins my Monday nights

(10:53pm) (Z) That's what I figure, Annie.

(10:53pm) (Quit) (Thoth) ([email protected]) (QUIT: Snak 4.8.3 Unregistered copy. Evaluation period is over. Program will now quit. Thanks for using Snak.)

<Mike> Now, I'll pour my soda into my Rob Van Dam cup on Monday night and not even be able to watch him

- Mike Van Siclen.

Fuck DirecTV

benoit does not belong with rvd, & he ESPECIALLY shouldn't be losing cleanly to him. he belongs with the rock, who can make him look better, taps once in a while, and at least waits till after the match to no-sell the arm.

Best show since X-7. I'd give HBK/HHH ***1/4 second time through. selling was whack, but the rest was really good and there was a super deep storyline with HBK becoming, well HBK, again, after he said HBK was dead.

I'd peg HBK at a little over ***, probably ***1/2. MUCH better than what I was expecting.

Match rating time:

Angle vs Ray at ***1/4, would be more if giving more time, like 15 to 20 mins.

Jericho vs Flair at **(I am being nice).

Eddy vs Edge ***1/4, would be more if Edge used a finisher that allowed him to SELL THE FUCKING SHOULDER!

UnAmericans vs BookerDust **, standard RAW match with screwjob ending. Jesus, its takes a chair, Test, a belt shot, and ref bump who SEES TEST LEAVING AFTER HIS FOOT IS COMING DOWN AND BOOKER FALLING TO THE MAT!! to beat them. They will never get over like that.

Benoit vs RVD ***3/4 almost a **** match except crowd heat(expected) and the flow at times kinda hurt it.

Test vs Taker was about ** at most. Cool to see the Tombstone, not cool to see the UnAmericans get squashed by Taker all at once.

HBK vs HHH was about ***1/4 stars. Good super long hardcore match, but the problem is HBK to make this match seem good, basiclly NO SOLD THE BACK. Everyone says this is a good match, which is was, but forget to notice that all of HHH working on the back meant jack shit until the 2.5pound slegehammer at the end of the match. So it was pointless. HBK was Jeff Hardy with the crowd going all WMX8 on him. Plus, HBK who is really retired going over a wrestler is stupid...but he is Trips best friend. So HHH only lays down for his buddies and Undertaker. This was a good match but also a load of farce.

Brock vs Rock was ***3/4. Rocky pulled out the OVW Brock and it was a good match. Heyman kept Brock a heel. But now people might cheer him. Plus the crowd knew he was going to win and got behind him. It was weird hearing Brock get a pop of any kind though. But I still feel this reign will either be short or bomb. I can't pick yet.

Overall: Best PPV of the year that I saw. But that isn't saying much. It isn't even best Summerslam ever. Last year except one match and the year before that were better. Best PPV ever is a toss up between Great American Bash 89, Wrestlemania X-Seven, and Backlash2000.

Another Rant: People who hate Rocky for going to Hollywood need to remember McMahon is on the byline, so thats MORE money for him. So Vince doesn't care which way he gets money off Rocky, as long as he does.

Man, I completely marked out for HBK, and the main event. This was a breath of fresh air after months of mediocre PPVS. I am still in shock they booed The Rock. I smell a face turn for Lesnar..........

Did anyone else find it odd that Angle emphasized that he would break Mysterio's leg but failed to work the leg.

Yes.

Match Rating Time:

Angle vs Rey:***, obviously too fucking short

Jericho vs Flair:**1/2, the finish was awful, but I'm assuming that Jericho will eventually get his win back down the line

Eddy vs Edge :***, Edge should be stabbed up the ass with a pickaxe for the finish

UnAmericans vs BookerDust :**1/2, Why does Test always win the match even though he isn't involved?

Benoit vs RVD ***1/2, I don't really see what all the fuss was about. Very Good match, but not a ****+, IMO

Test vs Taker:*, Test sucks

HBK vs HHH :***1/4, Great effort from HBK. Far too long, and of course overrated big time by alot of people so far. It died a bit in the middle, but overall it was really entertaining.

Brock vs Rock:***, Good match with an amazing crowd reaction.

i think the show was excellent. it wasnt perfect by any means but every match was at least good, and very entertaing.

I thought the main event was a bit lacking but even HHH/HBK managed to pull of a good match.

Everypne here seems to be far too negative. Remember, You dont HAVE to watch the WWE! You must at least like what they do, or you wouldnt watch it would you ??

ChUnK!

Rey/Angle- ***1/2 too short for more

Jericho/Flair- **1/2 too many chops and booking pissing me off

Eddy/Edge- *** minus 1/2 * for the finish

Tag Match- **1/2 solid match good crowd added to it a little

Benoit/RVD- ***1/2 too much Benoit beating down RVD no comebacks

Test/Taker- *1/2 eh fine for what it was

HBK/HHH- **1/2 I just didn't feel it. Superlong hardcore match

Brock/Rock- ***1/2 *** for the match crowd adds 1/2 *

Best PPV since RR solid up and down makes it one of the best of the year, but nothing really spectacular keeps it from one of the best ever.

This year's Summerslam was better than last year or the year before, but I liked those as well.

Last year: The main event sucked (Rock vs. Booker), but everything was consistently good sans the tag team cage match. Solid, but other than the World Title match, a somewhat unspectacular ppv.

2000: Great TLC, Intercontinental and World Title matches. SHITTY undercard. RTC/Too Cool? Road Dogg/X-Pac? Friggin' Jerry Lawler vs. Tazz?

Now, if you reason that the undercard last night was incredibly consistant and entertaining (Mysterio/Angle, Eddie/Edge, RVD/Benoit) and that the "subpar" matches still exceeded expectation (Test/Undertaker), then using that logic, last night had a much more well-rounded under-mid card than 2000 or 2001. As for the main events, I won't argue about the HBK/HHH match. You either loved it or hated it based on personal biases. I would personally put it above ****, but that's me. As for the title match, the crowd added a lot to an already good contest. At least a ***1/2 match; better than last year, on par with 2000.

Final thoughts: If one were to view a wrestling show as a scientific and logical entity, deconstructing match ratings and using those alone to infallibly prove a show's dominance, then, yes, perhaps one could argue that 2001 had more higher-ranked matches and 2000 had two blowaway matches that stack up favorably against anything the WWE's ever done. However, to me what holds more water is looking at how each match exists on its own terms (ie, can each match be admired on its own terms and then looked at as a building block and primary factor in the show's overall worth?). Summerslam 2001 was good, but due to the shitty storyline vacuum the whole show seemed to be sucked into, much it was lost on me and I have a difficult time watching it today (except for the Angle/Austin match, which is still superlative). Rewind to Summerslam 2000. In an incredible year that boasted some of my favorite all-time shows (RR, Backlash, Wrestlemania), Summerslam had two matches that prevented it from mediocrity: TLC and Benoit/Jericho. In much the same fashion as WMX was saved by two great matches, Summerslam just seemed to lack that big-show flavor, and similarly, I cannot watch much of the midcard from WMX (well, of course with one very notable exception).

I'm being verbose as all hell, but with such a damn subjective topic, I feel like I owe a detailed explanation for my opinion. Angle/Mysterio provided an incredible base for the show to build off of and if you locked me in a closet with this match, a steel folding chair and 4 hours to kill, I would not get bored with it; pretty high praise, huh? Flair/Jericho was fun for nostalgia purposes and I have no problem with Jericho jobbing. Sorry, but I have a sneaking suspicion he'll get some revenge. Have patience, sports fans. Edge/Guerrero was wonderful and to draw a comparison, I enjoyed it more than Edge's match last year (against Storm in the opener). The tag title match was a serviceable tag match that got the crowd back into it. I like the classic formula. I LOVED RVD/Benoit. It started with the stiff-ass kicks that RVD laced Benoit with; then the breathtaking Northern Lights sequences, which is like one of the coolest wrestling sequences I've ever seen. Brutal action at its best and it looks like this feud isn't over : ). Test/Undertaker was better than anything on the Summerlam 2000 undercard (excluding Shane/Blackman, but that was mid-card anyway; just covering my tracks), and better than it should have been. HBK/HHH was the fourth great match on the card and has more long-term value (for me at least) than TLC 2000 (or, for that matter, Rock/Hogan from Wrestlemania). 'Nuff said. Finally, the main event was significantly aided by a game, unpredictable crowd. Best Summerslam main event since 1999.

Final Tally: 5 Great matches, 2 good matches and 1 decent match from Summerslam 2002, plus the best show in a long damn time (perhaps ever as far as I'm concerned), and hopefully a huge momentum boost and sign of excellent things to come from the WWE.

Just because, here are my star ratings:

Mysterio/Angle: ****.

Flair/Jericho: ***.

Edge/Guerrero: ***3/4.

Un-Americans vs. Booker/Goldust: ***

RVD/Benoit: ****1/4

Test/Undertaker: **.

HBK/HHH: ****1/2. My personal MOTY.

Brock/Rock: ***3/4.

I'm ready for the feedback...

ok with the exception of Candaian Horseman, most accounts have only one match, if that, at **** or higher. While almost everyone is in universal agreement that the show was solid, top to bottom, w/ only one actual **** match on the card, how can you even call this one of the greatest PPV's pf all time??? I'm not saying it's a bad PPV, but greatest of all time? Puh-lease. Let's save those titles for shows that truly deserve them!

Perhaps that the WWE hasn't put on show remotely this good in a long time is causing this case of hyperbole. Yes, it was a very good show, and yes, it is the best PPV of the year so far. But best ever? No.
