I personally think Mel Brooks is the best comedic director of all time and the man does it all (Writes, directs, produces, acts) and does it all well. My favorite movie is probably Blazing Saddles followed in order by Space Balls, History of the World, Young Frankenstein and High Anxiety. Even though I had Spaceballs on VHS I went and bought it on DVD just for the Mel Brooks commentary throughout the flick. I would recommend to anyone that they pick it up for that alone because its only like $9.99. By the way... I know I left of The 12 Chairs but I personally didn't think it was up to par as the other 10 movies.

I like Mel Brooks, but at times he seems... I dunno... a bit bombastic. It's like every now and then, his movies will stop dead in their tracks, turn to the audience, and scream "This is funny! LAUGH, DAMN YOU!" Probably the best example I can think of is the hella lame parody of Psycho's shower scene in High Anxiety. I mean, what was the point? Really? The funniest part was the oddly calm expression on Brooks's face afterwards. [/rant]

Having said that, I'd go with Young Frankenstein. It actually has a good story and characters I really cared about, along with some damn fine comedy. Gene Wilder rules the world.

The Producers.

One of the funniest things I have ever seen is opening production number of 'Springtime for Hitler.'

Another vote for Spaceballs.

And may I say that HoTW really sucked?

As a history freak, I voted for History of the World. I found it hilarious, barely beating out Spaceballs.

No you may not!

However, you may say it about Dracula: Dead and Loving It if you'd like.

Hitler on Ice was funny

I would like to add that any Lieslie Neilson move after Naked Gunn is just tired and boring.

Producers over Blazing Saddles in a close one. Come on...Springtime for Hitler? I'd go watch that play in a second, total hilarity. Spaceballs is pretty funny too, Keep firing assholes!

Blazing Saddles is my choice. That movie is just too funny to describe. I love the actors in it, and Brooks wrote it to perfection.

What about Naked Gun 2, I thought that was really funny but after that I think your right everything sucked

I just watched Blazing Saddles on HBO the other day........great stuff

"Credintials?"

"Stampeding cattle..."

"Stampeding cattle? That's not much of a crime."

"...through the Vatican!"

"Kinky!"

"Credintials?"

"Herding cattle..."

"Herding cattle? That's not much of a crime."

It's Stampeding cattle, but that's beside the point. There's another great quote in that scene too.

"Rape, murder, arson, and rape."

"You said Rape twice.."

"I like rape."

That's Stampeding cattle, not herding

"Head them off at the pass? I hate that cliche *BANG*"

"How did he do such terriffic stunts. with such little feet!"

"Don't you know this is the last act of a desperate man?"

"We don't care if it's the first act of Henry V, we're leaving"

I watched Blazing Saddles last night and I can't believe Mel Brooks wrote most of the songs in it.

I wanted to go Silent Movie, but Spaceballs was the first one I saw (in the movie theater no less).

I can't believe 20th Century Fox actually let Mel Brooks make Silent Movie. Mel Brooks must've been allowed to do whatever movie he wanted to do in the 70's.

If you just look at the originality and energy and just slick comedic timing, Space Balls is way behind Young Frankenstein, Silent Movie, Blazing Saddles, High Anxiety and the Producers. Space Balls is a funny movie but I think it gives in too much to Brooks' worse indulgements of just going for the joke and led to his down hill slide that produced Robin Hood Men in Tights and Dracula Dead and Loving It.

Blazing Saddles is pretty much tied on my list with Raising Arizona for the best comedy ever made. However, I think the "Spring Time for Hitler" number is one of the funniest bits ever put on film. Dick Shawn as Hitler is just mind blowing.

As a sidenote: Brooks created Get Smart along with Buck Henry and the first handful of episodes that they really worked on are beyond hilarious.
