Burning the American Flag

Recommended Posts

Guest Downhome

Speaking of burning the flag, I was prepared to laugh my ass off had Kane's pyro caught the flag on fire as Bradshaw was waving it around wildly. Yeah, I don't want to see it be burned, but that would have been too funny, having him wave it while it was burning, and he didn't know it, leaving Kane to point it out, as the UnAmericans looked on. :D :D :D

Wrestling is already the media's bitch, why they would do this is beyond me. It would just further bury them in the mainstream.

Exactly. Vince McMahon and the WWE would NEVER hear the end of this from the mainstream media.

I want to see them burn it.

Hell a lot of Americans can dish out abuse and disrespect others but when tables turn they stick their heads in their asses and act like their on pedestall.

Who do we abuse?

Who do we abuse?

THEM.

The undefined downtrodden.

The best part is I have yet to see an American burn another country's flag for giggles, but THEM sure do enjoy doing the trick to us.

You'll seldom go wrong in the Chomskyist's eyes if you blame America first.

Yeah how come it's ok for HBK to do all this shit to the Canadian flag but people go crazy when they do something to the American flag? Jeez.....it's just a piece of cloth......

And by that standard of thinking the Bible and Koran are just a bunch of paper. Why doesn't Batista burn a bible in front of Rev. D-Von to show his displeasure????

Because there are some lines you do not cross. Also, do you really think McMahon is going to piss off TNN, the good ole boy network, by burning a flag????

Guest Smell the ratings!!!

There is no way in the name of fuck they would really do it.

Besides the riot which would most likely ensue, the total burial of all 3 guys, and the fact that it's so close to "Fear the rest of the world, the're out to get you" Day, the media backlash would most likely sink ratings to extreme lows. People are very weird about wrestling, and no one would say "hey, it's just TV, big deal". People would say WWE is sick fucking communist drivel, they would lose all sponsors and get blackballed out of TV.

Maybe people get all up in arms because it's preformed live? Live theater stays away from this risky shit too, while movies do it in droves.

I find nothing wrong with burning the American flag.

If you think about it, doing it is all for show, entertainment. For example, in the movie American History X, Edward Norton's character(Derek Vinyard) has a swa-sticka on his chest. Were some people offended by it? Yes, I am sure some were. And if your offended, don't watch it.

Now, did Edward get shit for doing that? No, because it was a movie, for entertainment purposes. Wrestling is the same way, it is a form of entertainment. If Test burns the flag, it is Test burning the flag, not Andrew Martin.

So it is fine by me.

No, Edward Norton didn't get criticized for it because it was a movie that was pointing out something about our society. If a movie, starring Edward Norton, were to endorse the Nazi doctrine, then I'm sure he would get loads of shit.

Personally I think that it should be legal to burn the flag. It's a piece of cloth that Americans tend to idolize. But what I object to is someone remove any symbolism or meaning of their flag burning. In other words, I'm not offended by flag burnings, but I'm offended by WWE's haphazard use othe statement. I was fine with the UnAmericans flying the flag upside down, but burning the flag brings in a whole other load of shit.

I was not offended by American History X because the anti social and violent behavoir was used to prove a point and depict a problem, but Vince has no such intentions, therefore I will be offended. Now that doesn't mean that I'll be in Conecticut on Friday to protest, it just means that I will have grown tired of Vince McMahon and an incident like this may cause me to cease viewing WWE programing.

Actually you do have a very good point. I do think however that the Bible or the Koeran have a bit more value as they are the beliefs and principles of a deity as opposed to a symbol of a nation. Obviously the flag stands for the principles of a nation, but one of the principles of the US is freedom of speech, which facilitates flag burning if you ask me.

There should be a certain amount of respect paid to the symbol of this country by anyone who lives here. I don't think its such an imposition to ask the flag not be burned. I'd never do such a think to any countries flag. I don't see why it would be necessary for someone to burn mine.

Well, one might say that the Bible is just a tool to be used in order to channel your faith through, as people who truly have faith will believe in that faith whether they have the Bible in hand or not. The flag is a tool for those who love this country as it is a symbol for which Americans can channel their pride, patriotism and such. I agree with you that it is a form of free speech, and I dont really mind when someone burns a flag due to their beliefs, good or bad, about this country, but as a prop in a wrestling angle, then I think it shouldn't be used. If in real life, Test, Christian, Storm, Benoit, Edge, Val Venis and even Rey Misterio went to the center of the ring and truly felt upset over American values and burned a flag in protest to their true life beliefs, then hey, more power to them. If its used in order to get cheap heat for their heel characters, then its crossing the line.

Both of you made really good points. Although the ideas are different, I kind of agree with you both.

Guess i'm on the fence here......

But I still wouldn't see much harm in flag burning. Maybe the timing would be a little off considering 9-11 is only a week away.

I don't really want to see the flag be burned, but even if it does, I highly doubt that all of these riots, beatings, etc... from the fans would actually occure. Seriously, there is no way in hell that the fans in the crowd would react like that to the angle, in this current age of Pro. Wrestling.

Sure it was somewhat bad back in the early 80's and early 90's, but back then Pro. Wrestling was looked upon by many as true sport, and real. Now, everyone understands that it is simply entertainment, period. I've seen films in which flags have been destroyed, and I never once saw anyone go mad ass crazy over it, attacking the actor, or destroying the movie screen.

Hey, I dont mean it as an insult

Go ask random Americans, and I'll guarantee you that 95+% of them think that Canada is a joke. Americans ARE very arrogant, and we NEVER think of the other guy first.

I guess I'm in the other 5% of Americans that actually likes Canada.

I get pissed everytime JR spouts his "Love it or Leave it" bullshit. I hate the fact that the US thinks it can go around and police the entire world into "our" frame of thought.

After 9/11 when most people were showing their "pride" I was getting very sick. Amongst the flag waving were Arab students, at the college I go to, getting beat up and harassed. However that's ok because it was in national interest and for our security, right????? There's a fine line between pride in one's country and Nationalism (that's not a good thing, folks). I think "we" cross that line too much.

Burning the flag isn't illegal; in fact you are traditionally required to burn it if it touches the ground.

It boggles my mind to try to understand how people could condone the burning of the American Flag. It disgusts me to listen to Canadians on this board saying how they have no problem with the burning and that it is needed for this angle. What the hell does that mean ?! You don't burn another country's flag on television - period. I bet that if Kane and Bradshaw walked into the ring and lit the Canadian flag on fire, we'd have people on this board whining and bitching about how it is disrespectful to their country. Well, I would like to think that any American would feel the same way about this angle. At this time, especially so close to 9/11, the flag is a symbol of America's freedom and patriotism. And for Vince and the writers to send Storm, Christian, and Test out to torch the highest symbol in America would make me sick to my stomach. I'm not exaggerating here. It really would.

There are some kinds of intense heat you can try to get. There are some kinds of heat that you don't want to EVER get because you would be crossing that fateful line between what is entertaining and what is just deeply offensive. And, in my opinion, burning the American flag on live television and doing an interview at Ground Zero are both way too offensive for my tastes.

People bring up the idea that actors could do these in movies and nobody really cares. Are you for real ? There is a huge difference between what is done in the movies and what is done in the world of wrestling. The movies generally have a point they are trying to stretch across and, if a flag is burned, it is a sign of symbolism. What is the symbolism in Test burning the flag in the middle of the ring ? America Sucks ? We've heard that opinion for 2 months now. There is no damn reason for the flag being burned in the ring. It's not entertaining and it does nothing more than piss off the fans who bought tickets to the show and who are watching at home.

----And anyone who doesn't think that the American flag could have such an effect on people, research the story on the 9/11 flag disappearing and discover just how many people are upset over it. I'm all for freedom of speech but when you start trampling over people's beliefs and people's symbols, it's time to realize that perhaps, this is just a god damn stupid idea !

Burning it is too timid in my view. Every fan knows what the Unamericans are doing - you can smell the cheap heat from a mile away. It is not so much offensive as it is insulting. They need to go balls out on this, they need riot-level heat, they need to piss off every single fan in the fuckin audience - anything less is being a fn pussy.

Who said it was ok for Arab students to get beat up. Most normal people think that it's ok that Arabs are looked at more closely at airports.

You sound like so many arrogant whiney college students I know. What jackass professor told you the U.S. is terrible.

And college is not a good place to get your beliefs from. Those "professors" don't know shit because they are too tied up in their cushy jobs unlike the rest of us that do the grunt work.

All my comments were based on JR and the King's comments that sound really conservative in the fact that they basically are saying "Fuck you if you aren't American." I guess it was an off-the-topic mini rant.

I was just saying that I find it disgusting that Arab students were getting beat up because they are Arab. Most Americans seemed to be on some sort of pride kick and some of them felt that they could show their pride by injuring an Arab person. Wait, does that sound familiar???? Oh yeah, Neo Nazi's showing their "white pride" by beating up a Black person. Real Cool B-)

Did I say the US was terrible? I wouldn't still be living here if the US was terrible. I just think that this country does some stuff that is fucked up. It's not as simple as "Love it or Leave it." What it all comes down to for me is that I can speak my opinion. This country is basically as good as it gets.

I don't see the point in arguing (but I did it anyway) when I know that most people are too stubborn to accept a different view point (including myself, since I did this whole rebuttle), so I'll try to get back on the subject.

------------------------------back on topic----------------------------------

Do I think the Un Americans should burn the flag? No. If it's done in entertainment, that is one thing (in a movie or TV show), but not too many people can distinguish that difference since its looked at as almost a sport. I don't think any nations flag should be burned, its just wrong.
