Best Year for Wrestling

Recommended Posts

Guest BionicRedneck

I would say 1994 is the best year in wrestling.

The best mens singles match ever took place in AJPW between Toshiaki Kawada and Mitsuharu Misawa. Arguably the two best WWF matches ever happened at WrestleMania X. AAA put on possibly the best PPV ever-When Worlds Collide. NJPW presented the greatest one night tournament in wrestling history with the first Super J Cup, which included probably the best Jr. heavyweight match ever (Benoit/Sasuke) and AJW had the 10+ hour Big Egg Universe show.

1994 rules. :headbang:

I've always said that the best year any one company has ever had was the NWA in 1989.

You had the Flair vs. Steamboat feud, followed by Flair vs. Funk. Sting vs. Muta. Luger and Windham were at their best ever. Just about every big show had at least one match way over ****.

Bionic, I SO totally agree with you...and let's not forget NA, right?

WWF: Um...two ***** matches at WM 10, followed by the greatest 4-minute match in history at KOR 94 between Owen/123 Kid, followed by yet ANOTHER ***** between Hart bros...

WCW: Flair/Steamboat V: Flair barely escapes by the skin of his teeth. HELL YEAH! Oh, but when Hogan came in, it went to shits. At least he and Flair had good matches (for Hogan).

I have to go with '94. On top of all the events Bionic Redneck listed, '94 was also the year of the amazing New Japan Junior Tag League (which they haven't done since) that featured two amazing Benoit/Ohtani vs. Sasuke/Guererro matches, which still hold up as some of the best tags of the '90's, which says a whole lot.

I think '96 should be mentioned, mainly for the Junior heavy-weights. The NJ Junior division was at it's peak, with an incredibe roster of El Samurai, Jushin Liger, Shinjiro Ohtani, Ultimo Dragon, the Great Sasuke, Sabu, Scorpio, and the Holy Trinity of Wild Pegasus (Chris Benoit), Dean Malenko, and Black Tiger (Eddy Guererro), all hitting their peak and producing some awesome, awesome matches, some of the best cruiser matches ever. Rey Misterio, and Juvintude Guererra also had a fantastic match in Tijuana that can hold it's ground against almost any other North American match I've seen. The Holy Trinity, as well as the Luchadores ended up in WCW, which had an amazing Cruiserweigh division that year, too. Then there was Michinoku Pro, which had phenominal year, with everyone hitting their peak and taking the entire lucharesu style beyond anything thought possible. 10/10/96 and 12/16/96 are two of the most thought-out, well-planned spot fests ever, and I've yet see another clustefuck tag do what they did in those matches.

1985???

Why do you consider that the best year. While it did have Tully v. Magnum and the first Wrestlemania- I don't see how its better then 92 or 94

Going by N.A. since thats what I mostly watch I will say: 1987, 1988, 1992, 1994, and 2000 are all good years....but 1989 wins it. Too much good from both feds to name why.

There was other wrestling besides WWF and Jim Crockett crap back in 1985. World Class and Mid South were on the top of their games back then.

1989 gets the nod in my book. Of course you had the red hot NWA at a workrate standpoint. Then you also got the incredible feud of Liger and Sano in The New Japan Rings. You also finally saw Hogan w/o the WWF belt. Randy Savage became a mega star. UWF in Japan with Maeda was doing incredible business. Also you saw the soviets in the New Japan rings. You also got to remember Hogans 1st starring role in a movie. He was in NO Holds Barred.(LOL) But to me 89 will always be remebered by Flair and Steamboat. What a pair of cometitors.
