Guest AlwaysPissedOff Posted September 12, 2002 Report Posted September 12, 2002 Apparently, ex-Husker QB, Eric Crouch will be retiring from the NFL after a blistering career of a few months. Not mocking him or anything, but damn... did he get injured or just find a new high-paying profession? Maybe the Rams told him something he didn't like. I know it's not exactly earth-shattering news, but it kinda intrigues me.

Guest ant_7000 Posted September 12, 2002 Report Posted September 12, 2002 He just quit, I guess he had his sights on being a QB, but the scouts think he wasn't good enough to be one. So I guess he wasn't happy with his role on the team, but he shouldn't just quit like that.

I don't understand the reasoning behind making players play out of position like that. There are enough guys who are established WRs, why take a QB and make him play a different position?
Guest El Satanico Posted September 12, 2002 Report Posted September 12, 2002 I'm pretty sure that Crouch said that he had no problem being WR and that he would play whatever position that it takes to play in the NFL. Well the ESPN article did mention that he's been struggling with injuries thoughout camp and that's one of the things that was bothering him. They also mentioned something about him not being comfortable with the switch to WR, but the coaches said that he was doing fine. Maybe he got a good degree while in college and was just comfortable with giving football up.

Crouch could never of been a QB. He's can't throw the ball. I do agree about changing positions. Except for Randle-El who played some Receiver at Indiana.

Probably not, as he probably won't want the money that they'll offer him - CFL salaries are so low that players have (potentially higher paying) jobs in the off season...

The only person that I can think of that ran the option in college and still throw the ball is McNabb other than that they are no option QB's in the league.

I mean the guy did run all over everyone while at Nebraska, who's opponents train their teams to watch the run and only the run. Yet the Rams and everyone else want to put him at receiver and safety? Why?
Guest Leena Posted September 13, 2002 Report Posted September 13, 2002 Crouch is too small, and not fast enough to last as a RB in the NFL. Apparently, he didn't have the hands to play WR, and couldn't cut it as a safety. It wasn't a stupid pick by the Rams, because Crouch does have talent, and many other QB's have played at other positions. Scott Frost, Kordell for a while, Bert Emanuel, the rookie from Indiana this year who's name is escaping me..

I'm sure none of the teams ignored the rb possibilty when looking at him. He would've never made it as a rb with his running style. He was clumsy looking until he got to open field and could take off. WR would'e been has best chance to make the NFL. He wouldn't have been the first qb drafted for athletic ability and then switched positions.

Staley is quite a bit bigger Crouch is 6 foot 205 pounds Staley is 6 foot 2 230 pounds And Crouch isn't a trained rb. I'm not talking from personal experience but WR has to be easier to learn then rb.

I'd say RB might be easier. Either you block or run. WR have o learn many routes and still catch the ball with a defender on their ass. Some cases make being RB look hard. Case in point Woody Dantzler on Hard Knocks. Speaking of Hard Knocks, I don't know why some team hasn't picked up Richmond Flowers. This guy is a complete package. He can produce on the field and could be great PR. Have your B-days with a Cowboy, full with Richmond and his Karaoke machine.

RB and WR are probably both equally hard to learn. But i think you can be trained to be a WR easier then RB. I'd think being a RB involves more natural ability then WR does. I'd think that it's easier to learn to catch and run routes then it would be to learn to hit the holes and get through them cleanly. But i never played Football so take this with a grain of salt.
Guest phoenixrising Posted September 13, 2002 Report Posted September 13, 2002 Remember, running backs also have to know when to stay in to block as well as when to go out for a pass. I think that was one of the areas Dantzler was struggling with. I heard somewhere (on the radio I think) that part of Crouch's decision to retire was because of how the NFL game was different from college...in HS and college he played as a part of the team...in the NFL it is more every player for himself and he didn't really like that...also he had injuries piling up and probably decided he didn't want to risk his body if it wasn't fun for him anymore.
