the year in movies

Recommended Posts

Guest godthedog

we're past the 2/3 mark for 2002, and i'd just like to get everybody's thoughts on the movies so far this year. best movie so far, worst movie so far, how the year is in general, random rantings...all that good shit.

2002 doesn't seem to be an interesting year so far. The summer blockbusters fizzled, and the only "mainstream indies" (since I'm not "in the know" enough to get to see a lot of "true" indie films because there aren't any foreign/art house theatres in my area) that I've heard about that seems REALLY worth it are One Hour Photo and The Good Girl. Maybe Swimming... but I haven't read much about that one.

The Movies I've liked so far from 2002: (I am not saying these are the best, it's just ones I liked)

Signs

Episode 2

Reign of Fire

Mr. Deeds

Panic Room

Spiderman

We Were Soldiers (was this 2002? It's all running together for me)

I never saw MIB2 so I don't know about that one.

My movie going has slacked off considerably as compared to past years. Still. the best movie I did see this year is Y Tu Mama Tambien, and the worst is...well, I've managed to avoid any truly awful flicks, so the lame--but not terrible--Orange County gets the duke.

It's been a good year for movies. The only movie I can think of that I didn't like was Minority Report. The plot was great, but Spielberg deemed it necessary to stray away from plot development at some points and concentrate more on style and SHOCK!. I thought Spielberg was above that, but I guess not. I DID, on the other hand, recommend people to see this movie because it was one of those movies where I knew people would have extremely differing opinions.

Also agreed. The movie could have ended about 15-20 minutes before at it would have been a good finish IMO. Other than that, the S/FX, the moral issues were pretty good. I'd still recommend it.

Insomnia was merely ok with me. Didn't live up to the hype.

Other than those, my favs this year are Episode II and Spider-Man, but I'll go watch Road to Perdition and Signs next week.

I think this year has been terrible.

In fact...the only movie that I really liked was Count of Monte Cristo.

And that was nothing to write home about.

I think 2002 has been a decent year for movies, about on par with last year. I can't really judge until the end of the year, and it seems most of the really good films come out in the last 3 months of the year.

As for the movies that I have enjoyed the most this year, I would pick Brotherhood of the Wolf, Blade II, Panic Room, Frailty, The Salton Sea, Eight Legged Freaks and One Hour Photo. Hell, I'll even throw in Jason X as a guilty pleasure.

Hopefully more good stuff will get released in the next few months.

XXX was kind of a disappointment, great stunts but very bad acting by the man Vin Diesil, while Samuel Jackson as usual was the best actor on the movie.

this was supposed to be a really good, with new stuff from speilberg, mendes, nolan & the like, but it all turned out to be very disappointing & only mildly entertaining. no memorable american movies so far this year, not a one. this could end up being the worst year in movies for a long time, even worse than 2000.

only thing truly memorable about this year so far has been 'y tu mama tambien'. very memorable movie, but not great enough to pull the weight of all this other crap.

OMG, you guys are forgetting Changing Lanes. That was the best movie of the year, IMO. I also thought that Bourne Identity was very good.

Changing Lanes is the best movie that I have seen this year, but I also really liked We Were Soldiers and Minority Report.

Haven't seen "Changing Lanes", so that's not on my list right now...

It's really weird - the setup, from what I've seen in the previews, looks incredibly... dumb... but it got quite a few great reviews... I thinks I may hafta rent it.

Lilo and Stitch anyone? I know it might be not cool to look animated Disney features, but it was real written with a great score (Elvis!) and very fun movie.

I enjoyed Spiderman, Scooby Doo (Kill me I grew up on it), Scorpion King, Bend it Like Beckham (British Indy film), Signs, xXx was alright for what it was.

Movies I disliked include The Bourne Identity and The Sum of All Fears.

Here are the ones I remember liking when I saw them:

The Count of Monte Cristo

Spider-Man

The Bourne Identity

Road to Perdition

Signs

In the "Pretty good, but it's really more of a guilty pleasure than anything" category would be Undercover Brother. Solid!

A couple of movies that could have been very good, but were full of wasted potential and directorial posing were Attack of the Clones and Minority Report.

and the worst is...well, I've managed to avoid any truly awful flicks, so the lame--but not terrible--Orange County gets the duke.

Hell yeah.

I didn't dislike Spider-Man, but I had high expectations considering it was directed by Sam Raimi. Unfortunately, it has no Raimiesque style to it at all. That film could have been directed by anyone. It was a generic, mildly entertaining action film with no real style or direction. If Raimi hadn't directed it, my expectations would have been less and I probably would have enjoyed it more.

I'll reserve judgement on this year in film until the usually higher quality fall films come out. The highpoints this year for me so far have been a kick ass summer flick (Spiderman) and a good low budget thriller (One Hour Photo).

I really didn't do the summer movie thing at all.

What I liked that saw:

Ice Age

The Rookie

Resident Evil (technically, it wasnt playing here so I watched the copy my cousin downloaded)

Jason X (Same story as Res Evil)

What I hated

Big Trouble - thought it was funny but the end sucked.

Death to Smoochy - worst movie I ever went to see ever.

I usually avoid summer movies, and I would have gone to see Signs but our theatre ditched it 2 weeks after it started, and I decided that I'd wait for the DVD's of a couple other movies (Spiderman and Mr. Deeds)

It completely escaped my mind when I wrote that, but Austin Powers: Goldmember was faaaaar worse. So forget what I said about Orange County.
