Guest BaldFish Posted September 14, 2002 Report Posted September 14, 2002 Crossposted from "What if... Vince decided to screw Billy and Chuck?" How Vince can do damage control on this angle: Have a different, totally unexpected wrestler come out. A face. Edge if you can spare him, or even Crash, or someone without a defining characteristic. Turn them into Loss4Words. "Hey, I'm kind of sick of people using my sexual orientation as a publicity stunt. So just bring it, Rico, you pseudo-homo." Or something along those lines. Make them openly gay, but don't have them flaunt it. Don't give them a feather boa, make them compete in evening gown matches, just let them come out and then move on. Let heels rip on them, but only if you want the heels to job. The audience would hate it at first, but then start to respect the fact that they aren't flaunting their sexual orientation, and grow to respect them. At the same time, it'd change the way most of the marks view homosexuality. "If all them gay people were like him, maybe I wouldn't mind it so much." But, that'd require more planning than Vince believes necessary, and so it won't happen. ::grumble::
Guest Anglesault Posted September 14, 2002 Report Posted September 14, 2002 Yeah, turn Edge gay! Edge: That color scheme just totally clashes with your auburn highlites, DORK! ::Edge tries to spear someone, but he trips over his dress.::

Edge: That color scheme just totally clashes with your auburn highlites, DORK! ::Edge tries to spear someone, but he trips over his dress.:: Congratulations, you've just dramatically leaped past the point. The idea is that you have a character who is perfectly normal, and a moderate fan favorite, who happens to love the cock. NOT a mincing transvestite with fashion sense.
Guest Choken One Posted September 14, 2002 Report Posted September 14, 2002 Isn't that the gimmick Mike Sanders was in line for awhile back? If you want...Mike Awesome would best suited for the whole...Nobody would believe he was gay because he is so huge (Remember Archie and the Gay Football player). Right...The gimmick would be great but why do that when you can have "Hilarious Nefarious Comedy"?
Guest Jobber of the Week Posted September 14, 2002 Report Posted September 14, 2002 How about they just leave the subject alone and don't bring it up ever again? It's not like this deep of a political subject is really meant to be expressed, pro or con, in a wrestling ring. How about instead of turning MORE people gay, they just say "Hey look, we screwed up. No more same-sex angles." I'm suprised that Vince has wanted to do this angle for four years and his big ending is "nobody was really gay and the whole thing was a trap."
Guest BaldFish Posted September 15, 2002 Report Posted September 15, 2002 I'm not talking about starting a new angle. I'm talking about damage control, sticking a nice little morality tale on there as the puncher, and totally ignoring the wrestler's homosexuality for storyline purposes. One vignette. Effective spin control.
Guest deadbeater Posted September 15, 2002 Report Posted September 15, 2002 Why is "This is PC" a substitute for giving out a real reason why one disagrees with what somebody else says? Could it be because there is no real counter?

Heheh..."Never judge a book by its cover, Arch." Although I think most people's Gaydar would have went off around Roger.
Guest Anglesault Posted September 15, 2002 Report Posted September 15, 2002 The idea is that you have a character who is perfectly normal, Oh yeah, Edge is normal. He's a Canadian who thinks he's a California surfer dude, wears a bizarre trench coat, and humps the mat. Freud would have a field day. The closest thing you would have in wrestling to a "normal" person is Molly Holly.
Guest J*ingus Posted September 15, 2002 Report Posted September 15, 2002 You know the one, single statement the GLAAD reps made which proved to me that they didn't have a fucking clue about these characters, this angle, or wrestling in general? "Billy and Chuck were a welcomed departure from the stereotypical, often-victimized gay wrestlers of the past," said GLAAD spokesman Scott Seomin. "Scott Seomin never watched a WW(F)E show in his damn life before the wedding announcement caught everyone's attention for a week and a half," said SmartMarks spokesman Jingus.
Guest Muzz Posted September 15, 2002 Report Posted September 15, 2002 The idea is that you have a character who is perfectly normal I guess that would rule out a possible Johnny B. Badd return then. I wonder if WCW got in hot water over his character.
Guest Ram Posted September 15, 2002 Report Posted September 15, 2002 Must be where we live...However, I have a Gay Uncle and him and his Husband are very Willish...You woulden't even know they were married if you didn't see the rings..but just Roomates...That was what we tell the kids until they understand the idea. Same here. Well, that's what my parents told me. I thought they were just "roomates" for the longest time. They never showed any affection or anything. I'm in a similar situation. My uncle lives with another guy in California, and both of them are really, uh, femininish. Both teach ballet. But my parents insist they aren't gay. Maybe they aren't.
Guest the 1inch punch Posted September 15, 2002 Report Posted September 15, 2002 Scott Seomin Is that pronounced Semen???
Guest Mad Dog Posted September 15, 2002 Report Posted September 15, 2002 They couldn't even get the guys names right. Hmm.... how can you mix up Chuck Palumbo since he uses his real name. Idiots. And you see their ignorance of wrestling. He talks about victimized gay wrestlers. Then he doesn't recall Adrian Adonis very well. Adonis was considered an extremely dangerous guy in the ring even after the gimmick change. If anything he was the only gay wrestler to never be a steriotype.
Guest The Czech Republic Posted September 15, 2002 Report Posted September 15, 2002 Adonis was considered an extremely dangerous guy in the ring even after the gimmick change. If anything he was the only gay wrestler to never be a steriotype. Now wait, didn't Adonis cross-dress? And wasn't Exotic Adrian Street basically the same character?
Guest Mad Dog Posted September 15, 2002 Report Posted September 15, 2002 He was a cross dresser but if you read between the lines the character was gay as well. But he was still considered a very dangerous wrestler.
Guest nikowwf Posted September 16, 2002 Report Posted September 16, 2002 Is there anyone else who thinks its funny that Vince contacted GLAAD and told them about a gay wedding, got lots of mainstream press, and responded by giving us H.L.A. on monday and an angle which turned his characters babyface's by stating they were not gay in part. I thought its funny, but it does show something's not all there in the mind of Vince McMahon. Niko
