Disgusting piece of art

I didn't know what the woman was supposed to be doing at first. The comical side of me actually suggested it was a woman who fell down, hence the outrage at the placement next to a skating rink.

Just because something is still topical and in people's minds does not eliminate it from some kind of representation in print or art form. Do you see Greeks getting worked up about seeing The Death of Socrates? No. It's another case of oversensitivity. Yes, bad things happened, but ignoring them doesn't help. Using a defense like "the children see it" or whatnot creates a terrible double standard for when programs or exhibitions that children are encouraged to take in come along. Parents are encouraged to tell their children about it, so why would we want to cover it up elsewhere? At the National Museum of American History, from the 11th to sometime in January, they are running a 9/11 exhibit where they're showing just about everything that was awful about the event, and even encouraging people to write their feelings to be posted on the walls of the exhibit. I saw LOTS of kids in there.

Anyways, off the child part. Everything in this world is open to artistic interpretation, no matter how terrible or grisly or brutal. If a man made a sculpture of a contorted woman in her moment of death, he felt strongly enough about it to show his impression of it, which is that the woman has been stripped of her life and is now suffering from the strains of outside forces that she cannot control. Not even the placement is questionable. If it was put somewhere obscure, there would either be complaints that it can be seen by rats or that it blocks pedestrian traffic or something. On the other end, people might have a problem with what they think is a tribute of sorts being placed where few can see.

They tell us not to forget, but then they do their damndest to keep it out of the public eye.

As for the actual subject of people jumping to their deaths, I didn't actually see any of these suicides until I viewed the DVD that came with the What We Saw CBS News book. That's the extent to which it was edited even on the day itself.

Fo sheez,

Yes, you did just fine. In context with most of the board, "mark" usually means "jumped around and screamed 'that's so cool' when I saw The Rock blah blah blah Kurt Angle," but you had some perfectly acceptable usage right there.

I read the CNN story. Poor Fischl. I wonder if he expected this sort of reaction, or thought it might resonate more deeply than "please take it away."

You used it correctly.

You're coming around. We'll have you watching wrestling before too long ;)

Perhaps maybe it will turn you liberal as well... then, instead of arguing against you, I'll be arguing with you...

Nah.

:)

Actually, a liberal would say it's guarded under the first amendment.

It's guarded under the first amendment.

I meant I sounded like I was whining like a girl who didn't get a pony for Sweet 16.

But they do have HLA now and we know you like HLA. :P

BTW, I "mark" for real HLA.

Fair enough.

so much for being respectful to fellow posters and their beliefs

I tend to be a bit cynical and spiteful when issues are run into the ground by overexposure.

Anyway, the statue's gone so that's that.

Marney, I'm just curious how you found the board if you're not a wrestling fan since it's associated with a wrestling site. Just wondering? Long time lurker at the CE board.

I don't think she's on so I'll answer to the best of my ability. She's friends with Dr. Tom.

Simply because of the subject matter, CRD?

In this case, you can't ignore the subject matter IMO. Sept. 11th is still fresh in our minds and Fischl is capitalizing on that from the way I see it.

Is September 11th a sacred cow then, one which artists shouldn't be allowed to use to express feelings or memorials? Is September 11th a sacred cow then, one which artists shouldn't be allowed to use to express feelings or memorials?

It certainly could be as you see it--Fischl hasn't had much exposure lately, good or bad, except for a series of recurring shows in London--but this hardly seems exploitative.  Exploitative would have the woman not at the moment of impact, but after, with blood and brains on the pavement.

I'm all for the freedom of expression, don't get me wrong. I wouldn't take the right away from Fishchl for anything. Do I think he knew what he was doing? Yes, I do. Emotion is a very powerful thing and those who toy with it more often than not have a reason for doing so.

Art, however, is one of the most subjective things in the world, and you're certainly entitled to your own feelings.

As is anyone else. Living in the U.S., I've had to accept that I have to recognize alternative viewpoints. Furthermore, I respect most of those viewpoints just as I'd like to think my own would be respected. I've never been one to go around saying, "No, you're wrong!" to everyone who disagrees with me.

Bottom line, I was just expressing my opinion. You made some good points though.

Marney, you need to find a tape of some Joshi.

Japanese women's wrestling. They're quite dainty and lithe (most of them, anyway, then you've got Aja Kong and Bull Nakano...well, are you a chubby-chaser by chance? :P)

Anyways, back to the topic, yeah, that.

It's a shame they took that down, but if enough people bitched about it, I suppose it's the company's decision whether to put it there or not, like I said earlier... Hopefully it finds a place in the museum exhibit someone mentioned earlier.

God no. I loathe and despise fat people.
