Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted October 7, 2002 Report Posted October 7, 2002 Bret/Benoit is ***** IMO. The match wasn't for a title, or to settle a hot blood feud or anything, it was two wrestlers trained by the same man, both considered greats, wrestling in Owen's honor, for pride, to the best of their abilities, and it got the time and place to do it, all without trying to sell PPVs. Every move in the match was done flawlessly, and although we all knew who was going to win, and how, I think the ending is still emotional, and connected with the fans very well.
Guest RickyChosyu Posted October 8, 2002 Report Posted October 8, 2002 The execution of the match is great - it's the structure that's lacking. The moves don't tell a very good story, and the match doesn't connect as well as it should. It's overrated due to Benoit and Hart being internet favorites, the obvious "emotion" of honoring Owen, and the fact that it went long, and that they didn't screw anything up. That doesn't make it a classic, though.
Guest Dmann2000 Posted October 8, 2002 Report Posted October 8, 2002 I take it back, this week's match already appears to be 10/4/99, so keep those discussions going. (It's just I really, really, really, like the 92 Rumble, and I'll pimp it anytime I can)
Guest Tim Cooke Posted October 8, 2002 Report Posted October 8, 2002 I have yet to see a Royal Rumble that comes close to being a "must see" match. Tim
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted October 9, 2002 Report Posted October 9, 2002 I love the 92 rumble. I can see how people think otherwise, though. It's definitely something a person wouldn't like if they weren't into the WWF around that time period.
