Blowouts in Football History

Recommended Posts

Some of my favorites are the KSU blowouts of pissant teams. 76-0 over Ball State, 68-0 over LA-Monroe. You don't get that in the NFL

let me put up some historical blowouts that I've discovered

HOUSTON COUGARS 1968

Tulane W 54-7

Cincinnati W 71-33

Idaho W 77-3

Tulsa W 100-6

HOUSTON 1988 (The Klinger era, right?)

Louisiana Tech W 60-0

Tulsa W 82-28

Texas W 66-15

1989

Nevada-Las Vegas W 69-0

Temple W 65-7

Baylor W 66-10

Southern Methodist W 95-21

Texas Christian W 55-10

Rice W 64-0

Let me just note this..

MICHIGAN-FOOTBALL.COM RULES

this is the gateway into the NCAA part of Michigan-Football, browse if you must. :)

from the site, Classic Spurrier.

Florida over Central Michigan, 82-6

tis the reason to hate college football, padding the schedule with AA or division 2 teams and running up the score.

What about the old NFL Championship game (years before the AFL or the Super Bowl), wherein the Chicago Bears kicked the shit out of the Washington Redskins to the tune of 73-0? I'm pretty sure that remains the biggest blowout in NFL history.

Is that the one where the refs asked the Bears to stop kicking extra points because they were running out of footballs? (This was before there was a net to catch the extra point.)

I am SHOCKED, Tom, that you would bring that one up. My favorite blowout was Super Bowl XXII. That was the game that made me a Redskins fan.

SHOCKED!

Any game where Dallas or Miami loses big will always be a favorite of mine.

Also add any game where the Michael Vick led Falcons lose big will also be a fav.

HOUSTON 1988 (The Klinger era, right?)

Louisiana Tech W 60-0

Tulsa W 82-28

Texas W 66-15

Yep, that should be the Klingler era. I especially liked it when they went to Miami to play the Hurricanes, and Miami just KILLED them.

Actually, I'm surprised no one else did. It happened a long time ago, but it's a fairly famous trouncing in the annals of sports, not just the NFL.

As for my admitted Redskins hate, I'm in a quandary this year. I still hate the 'Skins, but I've always liked Steve Spurrier. I want to root for the Ball Coach, but I don't want to root for the team he commands. It's very frustrating every weekend.

after some research, 88-89 was Andre Ware

1990 was Klingler, which resulted in this..

Nevada-Las Vegas W 37-9

Texas Tech W 51-35

Rice W 24-22

Baylor W 31-15

Texas A&M W 36-31

Southern Methodist W 44-17

Arkansas W 62-28

Texas Christian W 56-35

Texas L 24-45

Eastern Washington W 84-21

Arizona State W 62-45

1991 was also David, this is where the crap hit the fan

Louisiana Tech W 73-3

Miami (FL) L 10-40

Illinois L 10-51

Baylor L 21-38

Arkansas L 17-29

Southern Methodist W 49-20

Texas A&M L 18-27

Texas W 23-14

Rice W 41-21

Texas Christian L 45-49

Texas Tech L 46-52

Both Ware and Klingler bombed in the NFL, but Ware was able to score over 90 points on the post-suspension SMU

I was going to mention the Cumberland game, but I was beat to it. That's the wildest score I've seen from that era, but it wasn't uncommon to find to find wins of 100 points or more.

2001

Division II's #1 Delta State 12, Valdosta State 70

Delta lost 42-0 in the rematch last night...

If you ever want to go into favorite basketball blowouts, I've got a high school gem. In a girls game complete with the old system of rovers, my high school came up with a score of 113-6 against their opponents.

Trust me, it's not easy being on the other side of that fence. I wanted to throw my TV out the window today, watching them pass all over the place. Stephen Davis has more rushing yards than anybody in the last three years, so only giving him 17 touches - 13 on the ground - will NOT do. And the 'Skins had a chance to win today, so there's no "we had to pass to catch up" excuse.

I'm also LOVING the fact that Marty Schottenhemier's 3-0 in San Diego.

Awesome game to be at live, as the crowd got more pumped up with every point the Als put on the board.

Some other KC favorites..

Kansas City 44

San Francisco 9

KC beating Denver 42-20 in 1992 may not be a blowout, but that did avenge that horsefaced motherfucker Elway screwing us over and over at Mile High.

and in my search for blowouts, I found one of the worst defenses ever. Southwest Louisana from 1997

Pittsburgh L 13-45

Oklahoma State L 7-31

Texas Tech L 14-59

Texas A&M L 0-66

Alabama-Birmingham L 7-42

Arkansas State W 41-38

orth Alabama L 42-48

Louisiana-Monroe L 21-28

Tulane L 0-56

Washington State L 7-77

Louisiana Tech L 24-63

It says alot about your team when the least # of points you allow in a game is 28. That's worse, they bothered to go back to Tulane in 1998 (72-20) during Tulane's "National title" 12-0 season. :)

Note to self: don't go to Louisana-Lafayette. :)

I think I remember that SW Louisiana game against WSU...due to a scheduling quirk they got the non-conference opponent in midseason. Ryan Leaf had 300 yards and 5 touchdowns in a quarter and a half of play.

My personal favorite is from the same year, when a 1-2 UCLA team rolled into Texas to face the defending Big 12 champs. Texas's starting QB went down, and their coach decided to throw rather than use Ricky Williams. UCLA blew out Texas 66-3 and I loved every minute of it. Texas went 5-6 and fired John Mackovic at the end of the season. UCLA went on to go 9-2, juuuuust missed out on the Rose Bowl (one of the losses was to WSU), beat Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl and finished #5 in the nation. Another blowout along the way was Houston, who UCLA beat 66-10. So UCLA was 2-0 against Texas schools, winning by a combined score of 132-13.

I remember the 44-9 loss KC hung on SF...SF had jumped out to a 10 and 0 start, mostly against sorry NFC West teams (this was when SF dominated the division) afterwards people were calling them the "44-9ers".

Edit: I meant 2-0 against Texas schools in the regular season...The Texas A&M score was much closer...less than a touchdown if I remember correctly.

Houston cheated so I don't know if any of those records count or not.

Nebraska 83 Minnestoa 10

Back in '83. It was at Minnesota, and Nebraska had one of the best teams never to win a National Championship.

I got one to add that does come from the NFL...

Jacksonville 64 - Miami 7 (Playoff game from several years ago)

That's my favorite blowout EVER because I'm a Jags fan and to see us destroy the Phins in Marino's last game was just glorious.

If memory serves me correct, the Redskins beat the Bears earlier that year and were favored to win that game, too...

Another blowout I just remembered..

1993 Kickoff Classic

Florida State 42

Kansas 0

Why did Kansas take that game? :D

and some classic BYU.. how about the BYU-UTEP rivalry? 14 straight wins for BYU from 1971 to 1984. Including 68-19 (1978), 83-7 (1980) and 63-0 (1973). Have I mentioned that michigan-football.com rules?

72-45, Hawaii over BYU
