Smallville Season Premiere

Recommended Posts

I could have sworn in all the previews of the season finally last season that they said "Clark will lose someone close to him and his secret will be exposed"

BUT (spoilers ahead)

Neither happened. Lana and Clark's dad are both alright and the reporter guy was killed by Lex. Did the writers change their minds or were they just trying to keep us tuned in?

I don't remember that line in the ads for the series premiere. Whatever they did, I thought tonight's episode was a good show. Smallville is the only show I watch on network TV with any kind of regularity. Lex Luthor is the best character on there, but I'm starting to like Clark's father more as the series goes on.

Maybe losing Chloe as a potential girlfriend?

I know it's reaching... but who knows.

As far as the secret being exposed... does Lana count? She knows something's up

I honestly don't remember that line from the previews

BTW - I expect this season to kick ass. I bet Clark tells Lana his secret, and Lex finally turns heel for good

And Clark will discover his flying power hopefully!

You guys think they will make the series go all away to the time when Clark goes to the fortress of solitude?

Nah, the series probably won't get that far, IMO. Back when the first season was still new, I kept reading that the writers said they would not let Clark fly on the show. I can see how him flying could be cool, but it could also look really cheesy if they didn't spend a lot of money to make it look right. So who knows. If I had to bet on it, I'd say they let him fly, but not this season

Yeah... it will probably take him a long time to learn how to fly assuming they let him fly at all

I hope this season his X-Ray vision gets more advanced...

I'm not sure about the comics... but in the movie, the first time you see him fly is in the fortress, but it's not clear whether that's where he learned how to fly. In the Superman animated series from about 2 or 3 years ago, he learns to fly as a kid in Smallville... so who knows

Personally, I'd love to see the series evolve into a new adventures of Superman show... keeping the same cast. But I know that won't happen.

Supposedly the show was supposed to be training the cast in their parts so that they could eventually play those parts in a new Superman movie. But the creators of the new movie didn't want that cast. That and if you've read the rough draft script it sounds horrible.

I'd rather see them spin Smallville off into a new Superman TV series and keep this cast on there rather than put them in a movie. I can't see this cast in a Superman movie for some reason. I don't bother reading movie scripts online. I'd rather see the movie when it comes out.

"Just this afternoon we were also told of another WB producing company that is upset over their "second son" treatment. Tollin/Robbins, the producing company led by Brian Robbins and Michael Tollin, have made a smash success with their WB TV series Smallville, which chronicles the life of a teenage Clark Kent. According to our source, Tollin/Robbins is upset that Peters/Abrams Superman movie screenplay violates the continuity established in their TV show. What Tollin/Robbins might not know is that there's even been a high level discussion about the possibility of ending Smallville prematurely so the new Superman film can have a clear playing field for its interpretation of the Superman characters. While that might sound insane, our source says that the only reason this discussion took place is because Columbia's Spider-Man made $400 million dollars domestically and nearly a billion dollars worldwide; if a Superman movie stands to make similar dough, a Smallville TV series could impact its chances at the box office. As crazy at that sounds we have to insist that we don't make this stuff up; we merely report it."

That's rediculous. If anything, having Smallville, being as good as it is, on TV will encourage people so go see a new Superman movie.

The S-5 script pisses all over continuity (you don't wanna know how badly) and the Warners brain-trust apparently feel that this show which - more or less - sticks to basics would "contradict their vision" (studio speak).

Remeber these are the people who've let Jon "Polar bears in the Fortrace of Solitude; Let's give Braniac a gay robot assistant" Peters handle the property for 6 years in spite of doing NOTHING with it for that time. In other words, these people are fucking morons.

They only see dollar signs after SpiderMan's $400 mil, and they'll destroy anything they think they have to in order to get there.

As much as I hate Smallville, I'd rather have them stick with the TV show than scrap it in favor of a new Superman movie. There's always the chance that the show could improve over time(plus it gives me something to complain about on Tuesdays), but it sounds like that movie would be pretty shitty.

I haven't watched the show since last season, so it's hard for me to summon the proper amount of hatred needed to rant on it.

So, I'll just point you to this thread, where I pretty much explain it.

I don't think Lex will turn full-blown heel this season. I read an interview somewhere (maybe on televisionwithoutpity.com) where one of the writers said that Lex may never become fully evil on the show, or that they'll save it for the very end. IMO, showing Lex as a generally decent guy whose amoral side is slowly emerging is probably more interesting than having him as a straight villain anyway.

EDIT: here's a line from jumptheshark.com that I liked:

The writers should have Chloe and Lex get together. It'd be more interesting to see characters who actually have life interact more with each other. Seeing Clark and Lana talk is like seeing two androids rehearsing for the movie A.I. God, even the supposed sexual tension can't break these two robots out of their shell.

Ah, I see your point AC. This episode, and last year's season finale didn't follow that formula at all however.

Also, that old thread has made me think of a new topic, thanks.

I get the feeling that if I read the script for the new Superman movie that I *might* not be feeling so good afterwards...

"No flights, no tights"

- Smallville creators Mike Millar & Alfred Gough motto

Millar and Gough have also revealed in the latest issue of (ugh) Wizard that a possible encounter with a young Bruce Wayne might be on the horizon for Smallville. No word on whom the actor to portray Bruce Wayne would be.

"I thought that in the comics and the Christopher Reeve movies that he doesn't learn to fly until he gets to the Fortress of Solitude?"

- LaParkaYourCar

In the Pre-Crisis version of Superman, he does not learn to fly until Superman (1st series) #10 (1941) which was exactly three years after he had made his debut in Action Comics #1 (1938). For the three years that Superman was not flying, he would either use his super speed to get around or else he would leap through the air to where it was that he needed to be.

In the Post-Crisis version of Superman, was exactly like the WB cartoon version where Supes and his family discovered that he had powers when he hit the age of puberty. He tested out his powers during this time as he learned how to control them and hone them if/when he ever needed them.

As an addendum, in John Byrne's excellent Man of Steel miniseries that revamped the character of Superman (thus finishing the work that Crisis started), Clark learned to fly quite by accident, and it was shortly before he left Smallville. I'd presume him to be 18-19 when that happened, and I guess him to be 17 on the "Smallville" series.

I'd say that Clark in Smallville is 17. He just had the big dance at school, which would mean he must be a junior if I had to make a guess as to what grade he is in. Otherwise if he was a senior in high school, he'd be graduating soon and I doubt that the show will have him move onto college this season or any other season anytime soon.

There was some confusion over this a while ago. Apparently, press kits that the WB was giving out made Clark and friends out to be around 16 -- and in one episode, Pete and Clark are worried about being picked as the Freshman scarecrow. It seems that they're older than that though.

16???

I have a bridge to sell Gough and Millar if they think that they can get away with telling fans that Clark and Co. are only 16 and are Freshmen in high school.

Seriously, that's a crock of shit. My kid brother thought that Clark and Co. were seniors in high school when he first saw the show. The cast is too old looking to pass off as 16 year olds in high school.
