ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli has confirmed it is a 12-year deal worth $115 million, giving the 25-year-old McNabb the biggest contract in NFL history. The deal also includes a $20 million signing bonus.

ahem..

It's good to see that they're giving him a deal that'll keep him there for years to come, but, why the overly-high price? That now makes McNabb the most overpaid player in the NFL. Granted, he is very talented and is a damn good football player, but, he's overpaid as are all these guys making millions of dollars. That's just what I think, I'm sure everyone else thinks differently.

I'd agree that he is way overpaid and they could have had him much cheaper, but I guess if they had the cap room to do so it was a good move to secure a guy who is clearly a QB for the future. I don't think a player with potential to become the star of the league would have signed a 10 year deal unless the price on it was huge.

Well, I'm sure the $115M isn't guaranteed, like in baseball. Looking at ESPN.com again, the most likely amount of the contract is 9 years and $72M. He'll probably restructure his contract in the final three years (if he's still playing at that point), since those are the big money years ($43 - 45 million total).

The Eagles' cap hit won't be that bad, only about $5.9M per season over the next three.

Baseball could take a hint from the NFL's system. That way, a guy like Manny Ramirez can't sleepwalk through half the season and collect $20 million at the end, no matter how many ground balls he doen't run out.

Rule #1 of football contracts:

The only guaranteed money that exists is the signing bonus.

I dont really think they overpaid for McNabb. They gave him the biggest contract in the league because Joe Banner,Eagles VP, in an interview said they feel he is the best player in the league.

This is a great deal for the Eagles as well. They have a ton of cap room over the next couple of years so use it to get 20 million of his contract out of the way now when the cap hit wont hurt them so they can afford to keep other players.

Also I am happy to see him get this because he is a decent human being. You see all of these people getting in trouble for smoking crack, being with hookers, having guns, running down traffic people that it is good to see a decent person rewarded.

They aren't really over paying him. Even if he plays out the entire 12 year contract without renogiating(won't happen) they will only be paying alittle over 9 mill a year. Yeah that's a shit load of money but he's not being grossly over paid.
