Guest RickyChosyu Report post Posted September 28, 2002 After watching this at friends house who taped the pay per view, I'm pretty sure this is the best match I'll see all year (still haven't seen those ROH tapes, Brian). I'm glad Kurt didn't overreach on the matwork this time and they did lots of cool worked-shoot spots that were very neat. The transition between shoot segments and pro-style spots was a little choppy at times, but overall, very well-done, and both guys sold like champs here. Finishing sequence is one of the coolest things I've seen in a while, too. Do you guys see anything topping this? Unless they have a signicantly better re-match, (unfortunately, that's rather unlikely), this pretty much stands as the one we've been waiting for. Reminded me why I like Benoit so much. Guest BlackRainbow1025 Report post Posted September 28, 2002 I downloaded it and even in the shitty quality, it was an incredible match. The roll-up at the end was a little weird-looking, but Angle holding the rope out with his foot was very cool. The locomotion Germans was great. The condition those two are in is unreal. I don't see anyone else topping it either, as much as I liked Angle/Mysterio from SS.
Guest RickyChosyu Report post Posted September 28, 2002 To be honest, I hate the Rolling Germans now. It kind of worked in this match to establish polarity, but opon seeing it, it's obvious how little that move actually means now. These days, that move should at least be credible enough to draw a near fall if someone bridges with it, and yet they hit some tem between the two of them before either would really sell the move. Overall, very good match, though.
Chunk 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2002 Thats certainly the best match ive seen this year! I think the finish was short of brilliant though. I mean, the submission reversals kicked ass of course, but the pin with Benoit on the ropes, just looked a little rushed and sloppy. Im not complaining though, becasue that match just showed how much the WWE are missing outon by not having angle and benoit in main events of ppv's! It was all i could do to watch taker vs brock. Big Boot, Big Boot, crappy blade job, Big Boot, DQ, HUH? Brocks through the set, im asleep! ChUnK! p.s. 200 posts baby!
Guest Muzz Report post Posted September 28, 2002 Was there anyone you know who didn't like it? I ask because, whenever there is a really good match which I love, a friend of mine usually says it was crap, and usually prefers something like Taker/Brock. Ugh, I hate it when I say I like Angle, and my friend replies, "Why do you like all the crap guys?"
Guest BAR Report post Posted September 28, 2002 Definately MOTY for me, I'd give it ****1/2.
Guest ISportsFan Report post Posted September 28, 2002 My signature says it all on my feelings for this match. Jason
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted September 28, 2002 I actually missed most of the match the first time around. (I refused to miss the The Sopranos to watch them do nothing with Angle and Benoit) but from what I saw, and when I saw the full thing later, I loved it. Guest FeArHaVoC Report post Posted September 28, 2002 It should be MOTY, but it won't when it comes time to vote on WWE.com at the end of the year. HHH/HBK will probably end up being MOTY.
Guest ftwdevils2469 Report post Posted September 28, 2002 The match is the Match of The Year but for some reason after watching The Wrestlemania Match yesterday I seem to like that one better.
Guest Tim Cooke Report post Posted September 28, 2002 Benoit/Angle is the shit. Easily the best Weeeeeeeeeeee match of the year. I agree the transitions in between the mat stuff and the pro stuff were choppy, but it worked in a WWE sense. The Rolling Germans can piss off..but at least they trieed to effectivly do something different by countering them. The selling of holds was better in the WM match, but this match was overall a lot better. And Ricky, those ROH tapes won't make you go gaga. Closest thing to excellence that I have seen is when I was at the Sept 21st show with some of the tag matches. Lo Ki was really exposed against Xavier on that card and the best workers, Dragon, Morgan, and Modest were reduced to tag matches which worked but didn't really engage the audience. Give me Spanky, Samoa Joe, Am Drag, Daniels, Modest, Morgan, and maybe Super Dragon and I could run a ***** monthly show each month. Tim
Guest Brian Report post Posted September 28, 2002 I have small problems with it like the minor brawling segment to the outside for no reason (Angle), and the Germans spot because to pull it off it takes total no selling on both guys parts pretty much. I don't know. I've certainly thought Eddie looked brilliant with Edge and I think he's going to get a chance to top it later this year. Still three months left. I liked both Edge matches this week as much, though I think the PPV one wasn't quite as good. Tim, what did you think of the debut three-way?
Guest RickyChosyu Report post Posted September 28, 2002 Haven't seen the Edge/Eddy match from Unforgiven, but from what I've heard Eddy put in quite a good performance. I suppose it's possible that he could build something really good if given time with Benoit, Angle, or Misterio, but otherwise I'm pretty sold on Angle/Benoit. I agree, there was some stuff that didn't fit, but as far as the WWE goes, this match had more cool things going on than most of the year's matches combined. And I'll agree that the opening portion wasn't as good as that of the X7 match, but overall, this match was better. Not sure what I'd rate it, though. Guest Tim Cooke Report post Posted September 28, 2002 I liked the 3 way but I can not stand any of Lo Ki's work. So that drags the match down. I think Daniels was very good (considering that I think most of his work is spotty at best) and Dragon was good but not yet to the point of greatness. Probably around ***1/2. Structurally, I liked the Smackdown 3 way with Benoit/Angle/Rey Jr better....if they gave it 18:30 like the ROH match, I see it totally beating the ROH match. Tim
Guest Brian Report post Posted September 28, 2002 I gave it ****1/4. Structurally, I thought it was great because they really cured the three-way problem which is that you end up with two guys working against each other and one guy outside, and just generally the monotony of having falls broken up. Daniels was just getting the shit kicked out of him, and Dragon seemed to be carrying the flow. It's just such a different three-way compared to alot of stuff you see. The smackDown, maybe, but the problem is it might degenrate into that one-on-one like it was earlier and a bunch of that pinfall-break-up shit I get tired of. I just thought alot of the spots were just really innovative and the way they got into them was just great.
Guest TheyCallMeMark Report post Posted September 28, 2002 I'm hoping the WWE picks up on Eddie getting over via awesome matwork and then give us either Eddie/Angle or Eddie/Benoit later this year, but barring either of those matchups happening I don't see Angle/Benoit being beaten. Best thing since the Brian Pillman memorial show.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted September 28, 2002 I'm hoping the WWE picks up on Eddie getting over via awesome matwork and then give us either Eddie/Angle or Eddie/Benoit later this year, I hope not. Give them something useful and productive to do, don't just have them face eash other because you refuse to use them. Can you imagine what would happen if something happened to TUW? There is No heel anywhere near main event cred level on Smackdown right now.
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted September 28, 2002 I'll also give it MOTY as well. It was better then RVD v. Eddy ladder match from MSG and that was my pick until then.
Chunk 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2002 Could you imagine angle/benoit in the mian event at WMXIX? What else can benoit do to make Vince wake up and push him to the main event? I feel for the guy! On the plus side, Hurri-tag champ! ChUnK!
Guest Brian Report post Posted September 28, 2002 Maybe Eddie will get Chavo to spark a face turn, even though I disagree with it because Eddie is such a fucking good heel.

Give them something useful and productive to do, don't just have them face eash other because you refuse to use them. cause god forbid the company try to entertain us with great matches. as great as angle/benoit was, i can definitely see them topping it next month if they just build on it. all they would need is five more minutes (and i think vince would be more than willing to give them at least five more minutes after unforgiven, especially since he's given them over half an hour before) and a proper ending. somebody actually getting a PIN from doing those ungodly amounts of german suplexes would be a great way to blow it all off. of course, they could do the ending where both have their shoulders down on it & it's declared a draw, but...let's just not think about that. Have them fight each other in the main event of a PPV in a world title match. Don't waste them in the upper midcard because Vince feels small isn't good. I mean, I know they are both lousy faces (I hate Face Benoit, leave it at that) but this is just stupid.
Guest godthedog Report post Posted September 29, 2002 hasn't really done anything for either guy? you don't think the unforgiven match did anything for either guy? they both walked out of that match looking like a million bucks, and the fans knew it. and weren't they both wrestling in the main even on smackdown on thursday, without any brock or taker crap? wouldn't you call that some kind of reward? after the shitty ending to their unforgiven match, do you expect them to drop the feud altogether to put one of them in a title push? it would make no sense at all, and every single fan except you would be pissed. stop wanting everything now. savor the matches while the feud lasts. Guest Anglesault Report post Posted September 29, 2002 hasn't really done anything for either guy? Both still heels? Check Both still midcarders? Check. Still feuding in a pointless feud for no reason? Check. and weren't they both wrestling in the main even on smackdown on thursday And Spike Dudley has main evented Raw before. Whoopdi Fucking Doo. after the shitty ending to their unforgiven match, do you expect them to drop the feud It's not like they were actually feuding for you know, a reason or anything. This is like WM X-Seven "I don't have a match, and neither do you" What the hell incentive do these guys have to go out here and put on a good match if they just go right back into the midcard after that? It's stupid.
Guest godthedog Report post Posted September 29, 2002 And Spike Dudley has main evented Raw before. Whoopdi Fucking Doo. no, that was a steve austin main event that spike dudley happened to be in. last thursday was an angle/benoit match that mysterio happened to be in. Both still heels? Check Both still midcarders? Check. Still feuding in a pointless feud for no reason? Check. fan reaction was bigger at unforgiven with both of them heels than almost anything they did in 2001, and the wwf knows neither guy can really hold his own as a face. if it ain't broke, why fix it? the fans obviously care without either having to be a face, so why change the dynamic? i think it's just a LITTLE too early to tell if they're still midcarders 2 days after the big match. in 2 months when they're done feuding with each other and move on to other opponents, then we can make a proper judgment as to where they stand. the tv buildup wasn't too great, but at unforgiven they made it obvious that they absolutely hate each other. that hate was continued and built upon beautifully at smackdown. jericho and rock feuded because they just hated each other, why can't angle and benoit? It's not like they were actually feuding for you know, a reason or anything. This is like WM X-Seven "I don't have a match, and neither do you" so you DO expect them to just drop the feud with each other without a proper blowoff and drop the brock/taker feud without a proper blowoff just so angle or benoit can be fed to lesnar. Guest PlatypusFool Report post Posted September 29, 2002 Yeah, Benoit / Angle is the best match I've seen so far this year. But I've got a lot of things that have been touted as MOTYC in the mail, so I'll get back to you in the end of the year MOTY threads.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted September 29, 2002 no, that was a steve austin main event that spike dudley happened to be in. last thursday was an angle/benoit match that mysterio happened to be in. Still the same thing. Everyone and their mothers have main evented a TV show. fan reaction was bigger at unforgiven with both of them heels than almost anything they did in 2001 So, personally, I would push them, but you know, they're small and stuff. i think it's just a LITTLE too early to tell if they're still midcarders 2 days after the big match The two of them combined couldn't beat a cruiserweight. Page me when that happens to HHH. in 2 months when they're done feuding with each other and move on to other opponents, then we can make a proper judgment as to where they stand. And I think that match should earn them a main event push sometime before Christmas. the tv buildup wasn't too great, but at unforgiven they made it obvious that they absolutely hate each other. that hate was continued and built upon beautifully at smackdown. jericho and rock feuded because they just hated each other, why can't angle and benoit? There was actually a reason for them to hate eachother. Two actually. Rock was champion, and Jericho needed to win a big match, which Rock said he couldn't. Why exactly do Angle and Benoit hate each other? you DO expect them to just drop the feud with each other without a proper blowoff and drop the brock/taker feud without a proper blowoff just so angle or benoit can be fed to lesnar. Have one of them beat Brock, continue the feud in the main events, and have Taker and Brock continue their feud (Which is also a main event feud)

Guest godthedog Report post Posted September 29, 2002 mysterio won because it was his hometown. i guarantee if it was any other city, angle would've won.
