I get pissed off when someone says that Prodigy is the best techno group/person ever, does that count? I also get mad when someone says they listen to dance music yet only know of stuff on the radio, which is good too, but if someone is going to claim that they love a genre, they need to know a bit about it. The thing I don't like about the "poser" argument is that it confines people to liking certain genres. I like bands, not genres. For example, I like several early punk bands, but the genre of punk? Yeah, but the first four Metallica CD's went in a progression of Suck->Suck with Gusto. I can't get past the vocals, which, ironically enough is 99% of the reason why people hate death bands. Kirk Hammet's pure unadulterated cheese solos are reason #2. Lars' bullshit and the whole napster scene combined with lack of talent is reason #3. Jason Newstead's COMPLETE lack of skill is #4. I'm capable of playing anything I've ever heard him do with my eyes shut after a few shots, and I'm not very good. Cliff was good, so there's that at least, so was Mustaine, but neither one is involved now, so that's a non-issue. Every one of their songs is twice as long as it needs to be, since they recycle every riff 5 times per song, add cheesy solo, add pseudo-classical breakdown with lame effects, grunt, say "Go!" once or twice, since they need to tell the audience what to do and all. Add cheese 80's solo part two. Make obvious metaphor, attempting to be subtle. Fade out. So, IMO, there's plenty of reasons to not like Metallica. They're the Akira Taue of bands. Sure, some death bands suck, and a lot of the ones that suck, suck BAD. Most of the meaningless gore bands with no remarkable talent are material that gets a big "pass" from me, since it doesn't really do anything useful, and it's just simplistic "Blast, grunt, Blast, chug riff, growl." About eating babies and raping people's mothers while gargling the discharge. That's just bad representation, though. Listen to Nile's new album, no one should be allowed to be that sick and that evil at the same time, all while being one of the most talented bands on earth, IMO. THAT is a pretty damn good example.
