Guest C.H.U.D. Report post Posted October 8, 2002 Some pretty good stuff this week, which is fine cuz the rest of October is looking slow. Alive The disturbing, yet entertaining true life plane crash/cannabalism movie arrives on DVD in a bargain priced, widescreen release. It also includes a documentary. American Ninja 2 & 3 Barebones, 2 movies on 1 disc release of the sequels to the Michael Dudikoff "classics". Billy Bathgate Entertaining gangster pic featuring Dustin Hoffman get's a budget priced DVD release in widescreen. Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Excellent children's adventure film arrives on DVD, unfortunately it's fullscreen. Groan. Jason Goes To Hell One of the crappier Friday the 13th sequels due to the lack of onscreen Jason, arrives in a fully loaded SE including both the theatrical and unrated versions of the film. Jason X My #1 guilty pleasure of the year get's a decent SE release, including a commentary and a couple of generic docu's. Missing in Action II & III Same deal as the American Ninja 2 movies on 1 disc deal. Except Chuck Norris owns. Muppet Christmas Carol I love the Muppet films, and this is one of my favourites. Too bad it's in fullframe. Saturday Night Fever The ultimate disco era film arrives totally remastered on DVD in a nice looking SE including a commentary and more. Spontaneous Combustion Low budget horror schlock film directed by Tobe Hooper and starring Brad Dourif get's a barebones release from Anchor Bay, including a trailer and a widescreen transfer. 'Till next week.

Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted October 8, 2002 Jason X was a guilty pleasure of mine as well. I was very suprised at how much I liked it. Jason Goes to Hell is even a consideration because they have the UNRATED version which is much more graphic....hmmm, decisions, decisions.
Guest Kingpk Report post Posted October 8, 2002 You forgot the biggest release this week: Yes folks, now YOU can own Kazaam on DVD.

Guest Dmann2000 Report post Posted October 9, 2002 Alive is out on DVD? *Runs off to Best Buy*
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted October 9, 2002 Jason X was sort of crappy, but I watched a downloaded version because our great theatre here in town wouldnt run it. So techinically I wasn't stealing! The quality wasnt that great, so imagine the DVD quality would give it a good boost. I might give it a rent, not worth buying though.. Guest Lethargic Report post Posted October 9, 2002 I got both Jason X and Goes to Hell. Wanted to get Brotherhood of the Wolf but they didn't have it. I don't see why Jason X is a "guilty pleasure" or whatever. It's one kick ass movie. Why should anybody feel guilty for liking it just because somebody else doesn't get it? Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted October 9, 2002 Yea I might get Jason X as well. I wouldn't call it a "guilty pleasure" movie either since the Friday the 13th series is well established and still has more fans than detractors. I'd call Kazaam a guilty pleasure though... but that would imply I liked it! Sounds like "An Exercise in Poor Taste" material to me... if I'd ever get off my ass and write more columns that is

Hey, I'm a huge F13 mark, but in all honesty I couldn't call Jason X a "good movie" considering the lack of story, characters or logic. Still, it's an F13 fans dream come true, it follows the formula to a tee and if I were to rate it out of 5, I would give it a 5. And it sure as hell was 100x better than Halloween: Resurrection. Guest J*ingus Report post Posted October 9, 2002 Jason X was what I'd call "good for an F13 flick", which translates as "piss-poor compared to real cinema". A pleasure, but definitely a guilty one.

Still, it's an F13 fans dream come true, it follows the formula to a tee and if I were to rate it out of 5, I would give it a 5. Which makes it a good movie. People always act like, well so and so is good for what it is. A horror movie can only be "so good". Why? Just because it's a different genre? People act like if it's not a highbrow arty drama like American Beauty or something that it can't be considered "good". I say if a movie sets out to reach a certain goal and it does that and at the same time entertains you...THAT makes it a good movie. If a movie is so bad that I watch it and laugh my ass off at it, watch it again and again and it entertains me non-stop....that, to me, is a GOOD movie. Movies are entertainment to me. So if they entertain me, what else do I want? It's like when people say "well, it wasn't very good but it was fun!" Huh? If it was fun to watch then it entertained you and that's all it's supposed to do. I can take a handful of movies like Citizen Kane, Jason X, Requiem for a Dream, Charlies Angels, L.A. Confidential and Revenge of the Zombies and label them ALL as good. Good in the same way? Not at all. But good is good. Enterainment is entertainment. To me anyway. And that's my rant for today. Not trying to rock the boat or anything but that old line of "I like it but it wasn't a good movie" and all it's variations is one of my pet peeves. If you like something like it, don't bow down to the pressure of the nitwits who might think you're stupid for liking it. It's their loss. Screw em. I've seen Pearl Harbor a dozen times. Do I care that other people didn't see what I saw in it and like to put me down for liking it just because it wasn't good according to their lofty standards? Not in the least. Guest Dmann2000 Report post Posted October 9, 2002 I know that most everyone here probably hates Disney but I thought I'd mention that everyone forgot (intentional or not) That Beauty and the Beast 2 disc Platinum Collection came out yesterday as well
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted October 9, 2002 I'm probably going to hold off buying some DVD's for a few weeks until I get the Friday the 13th Box Set Dames When was the box set released and what movies are in it? I'm actually going to try and hold out on DVDs until Something Weird's Hercules Against the Moon Men/The Witches Curse drops later this month. I'd also love to get Image's new Coffin Joe boxset, but I'm not deluding myself... I can conceivably save up enough for one DVD in a month, but boxsets can get expensive. The Dames 0 Report post Posted October 9, 2002 When was the box set released and what movies are in it? On ColumbiaHouse.com, if you look up F13th, they've got a Paramount Box Set with the first 8 movies for only 120. GREAT deal, especially from a company that is notorious for overpricing. However, there is no picture listed, so I'm afraid that its not so much a box set, but a package deal. Even so, its a steal. Dames

Guest J*ingus Report post Posted October 10, 2002 Depends on which classic movie. If it's, say, Inherit The Wind or 30 Seconds Over Tokyo, I'd have no arguments. But if it's, say, Touch Of Evil or Gaslight, then you got a fight on your hands.
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Report post Posted October 10, 2002 Scooby Doo! Where are you? lol.. Scooby Doo: The Movie comes out tomorrow. Dunno why the Friday release and I didnt see the movie although I heard it sucked, but I do like the cartoon..
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted October 10, 2002 I don't know what's with the Friday release of Rooby Roo either. But Cartoon Network is running Scaretoon Scaretoon Fridays this month and will be showing Scooby Doo movies so maybe the Friday release is because of that. I'm going to watch Scooby Doo just because of Matthew Lillard seemingly being possesed by the spirit of Shaggy. I probably wont buy it, but i definately want to see it,
