I saw this on a CNN crawl earlier this morning, but Universal will include the 1982 version of the film on the two disc set and not only the 3 disc collector's set that everyone was complaining about because it was retailed at 70 dollars.

Yeah, Spielberg found out last minute that they were doing the 3-disc scam, and changed it so both versions have it.

For that, Spielberg get's a

It's only for region 1, the rest of the world is still geting screwed. Universal is also sending out promotional material to retailers getting customers to believe the 70$ box is the only way to get the original version.

Ooooh i was wondering what the hell this was about.

Originally they were only giving you the new edited version unless you step up to the $70 boxset? That's a terrible thing to do to customers. I'm not too thrilled with having to purchase the edited movie to get the original.

Just wait until Star Wars comes out, since the rumors are we'll most likely be getting the SE and not the originals

There's no rumors. The original trilogy will be released on DVD as special editions only, with additional changes to boot.

Lucas himself has verified this. He considers the original cuts of the films to be "works-in-progress".

The digitally altered Star Wars doesn't bother me as much as the digitally edited E.T.

The whole editing guns out of ET stuff just pisses me off. I'd rather not have to buy Spielberg's political views that he forced into a old movie.

I'm just glad I have the original Star Wars trilogy on DVD already.............

The guns were the best part of the movie. I loved it how the FBI needs shotguns to take down a group of kids on bikes.

Wasn't it actually Drew Barrymore who wanted those changes? She apparently wasn't content with trying to ruin Donnie Darko...

Well, i've never heard anything about her wanting it. Spielberg himself was talking about wanting to take the guns out in inteviews.

Besides Spielberg wouldn't have done it if he didn't want to do it.

How is the quality of those bootlegs? I was tempted to get them myself.

They're OK. Some of the dialogue on ESB & ROTJ is off-sync from the picture, but I can deal w/ it. There's a "5 star" edition available (~$34.99), but I don't know how it compares to the versions I got.

I look at it this way: we probably won't ever get an official release of the original versions, and for $10 or $12 per movie, you can't beat the price. If you love Star Wars, I'd strongly suggest getting it. You're not getting it for the quality, you're getting it because it's the only chance to get the originals in DVD format.

And I'll most likely get the official releases, also.

Back to ET

The 3-disc version of E.T. doesn't have the DTS track on the 1982 version of the film which is available on the 2-disc set 1982 version. That really doesn't make sense to me. You spend 70 bucks for the super special edition and don't even get the basic features off the regular Special Edition.

I was in Tower Records today after picking up ET at a local Wiz. There was this guy holding the $70 case and I asked him what was on it. He said he was getting it because he wanted the original release not the version he said was "hacked up". I informed him that in came on the 2 discer too. He refused to believe me until he read the packaging on the 2 discer AND had a staff member tell him that. He bought the 70 dollar package anyway.
