Guest Black Tiger Report post Posted October 21, 2002 Sorry if this has come up before, Has anyone seen the NWA Title match between Ricky Steamboat and Tiger Mask II? One would have to figure that these two guys would be able to pull out a *** match without many problems. I also thought that about Tiger Mask II vs. Bret Hart in 1990 and look how that turned out. Guest J*ingus Report post Posted October 21, 2002 It wasn't as bad as TMII-Hart, but still wasn't as great as it could've been. Misawa never really hit his stride until he took off the mask. (Of course, the only copy I have is JIP, so I haven't seen the full version.)
Guest wolverine Report post Posted October 21, 2002 "Misawa never really hit his stride until he took off the mask." Then how do you explain his MOTYC with Jumbo in 3/88?
Guest J*ingus Report post Posted October 21, 2002 One MOTYC before he unmasked, about five billion afterwards, you tell me.
Guest wolverine Report post Posted October 21, 2002 5 billion? HA. You must be one of those HEADDROP~! fans.
EL DANDY~! 0 Report post Posted October 21, 2002 Well, I know of two matches he did WITH Jumbo after he took off the mask that was a MOTYC, one being a MOTD candidate...so there.
Guest wolverine Report post Posted October 21, 2002 Yeah and.........? I was just contesting the myth that he's had dozens of singles MOTYC's, when I've only seen about 12, maybe less. And over the course of the decade, that averages to a little over 1 per year.
Guest DragonflyKid Report post Posted October 22, 2002 wolverine Posted on Oct 21 2002, 02:37 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5 billion? HA. You must be one of those HEADDROP~! fans. Did I sense negativity towards headdrop fans in that comment? I actually went back and watched some '93 AJ tv* after concentrating my puroresu watching efforts elsewhere for a while and I do admit my appreciation of the style and quality of that period has increased. I still believe the '98 MM/KK match to be 5stars but the Carny matches from '93 and the like are more psychologically rich. I don't find '98 and '99 MM/KK to be devoid of storytelling but can notice their flaws more readily now. I still love the headdrops though and will "overrate" matches for every headdrop delivered, I guess I'm hopeless in that way. BTW Rob Van Dam mad me laugh in the 2/93 match, he looked absurd in there trying to be mr. karate guy with his weak arsenal of barefooted kicks and karate chops post-pose. Kawada killed him with a wicked spinning heel kick while looking annoyed at having to be in there with RVD. I also thought the crowd reaction to RVD's summersault followed by a splash was funny. *AJ TV 2/15/93 - 4/26/93 Akiyama vs. Smith 2/15/93(JIP) Misawa/Kawada vs. Williams/Gordy 2/15/93 Misawa/Kikuchi/Asako vs. Akiyama/Taue/Ogawa 2/22/93 Patriot/Eagle vs. Williams/Gordy 2/22/93(JIP) Kawada/Kobashi vs. Hansen/Rob Van Dam 2/22/93 Patriot/Eagle vs. Kobashi/Kikuchi 3/1/93(JIP) Williams/Gordy vs. Dory Funk/Akiyama 3/1/93(JIP) Hansen/Spivey vs. The Blackhearts 3/1/93(JIP) Misawa/Kawada vs. Taue/Fuchi 3/1/93 Kobashi vs. Spivey 3/8/93(JIP) Misawa vs. Taue 3/8/93 Akiyama vs. Gordy 3/15/93(JIP) Kikuchi vs. Fuchi 3/15/93 Kawada vs. Hansen 3/15/93 Taue vs. Ace 4/12/93(JIP) Misawa vs. Hansen 2/12/93(CL) Williams vs. Gordy 4/12/93(JIP) Kawada vs. Taue 4/12/93 (JIP) Misawa vs. Kobashi 4/12/93(JIP) Kobashi vs. Kawada 4/26/93 (JIP) Hansen vs. Taue 4/26/93(JIP) Misawa vs. Gordy 4/26/93(JIP) Furnas vs. Patriot 4/26/93 (CL) Williams vs. Kroffat 4/26/93(JIP) AJ TV 8/2/93 – 9/6/93 Hansen vs. Akiyama 7/26/93 (JIP) Kawada/Taue vs. Williams/Gordy 7/26/93 Destroyer/Beyer/Baba vs. Fuch/Eigen/Inoue 7/29/93 (CL) Misawa vs. Kawada 7/29/93 Dynamite Kid/J. Guest wolverine Report post Posted October 22, 2002 Those two tapes only scratch the surface of AJ's 1993 year. I went back and tried to fill in some of the gaps (like the Misawa-Kawada Carny, 7/93 6-man, 10/93 Kobashi-Kawada) I love that stuff.
Guest XdojimeX Report post Posted October 22, 2002 About Steamer in Japan, he never seemed to be able to catch on to the style over there or with the audiences for that matter. The Muta match in particular was pretty bad, although not all his fault. I actually remember him getting booed a bit in a mediocre match with Hiro Hase which surprised the hell out of me. Fish out of water. "I was just contesting the myth that he's had dozens of singles MOTYC's, when I've only seen about 12, maybe less. And over the course of the decade, that averages to a little over 1 per year." Don't forget the Kobayashi match in '85. And almost averaging a MOTY per year for the better part of a decade ain't too bad. Pretty select company actually.
