Before they played it on the radio, they said it was recorded sometime in 1994, while I feel the song has the sound of most of the stuff on Bleach. Kinda weird..

Guest Kinetic Posted October 28, 2002 Report Posted October 28, 2002 I had a radio rock overload this weekend and I have to say that the new Nirvana is almost indistinguishable from much of that stuff. The only things that stand out about the song are Cobain's vocals (which are light years better than most people give him credit for) and Grohl's drumming. The rest of it could just as easily be Puddle of Mudd or something like that. Sometimes songs are unreleased for a reason.

Layne Staley sounds just like that Wes guy, or vice-versa... Puddle of Mudd is the main offender, but there's a definite Nirvana influence in The Vines and a few others that I can't list. A lot of the more unsavory elements of the grunge sound are thriving in the current mainstream rock environment--sludgy production values, off-key screaming, incoherent anger and depression, etc.-- and from where I sit beneath this black Resistol 2X10 hat, the new Nirvana song suffers from being ahead of its time in terms of its mediocrity.

You presumptuous ni...nevermind. You're wrong on this one, my Favre-loving friend, because "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is a completely different sort of beast. It's catchy, it's anthemic, and it sounds like a single. "You Know You're Right" sounds like the barrel-scraping of a long-dead but once great artist, which coincidentally sounds pretty similar to a lot of first-run stuff from today's most popular modern rock bands.

Basically what I said at first, was that Nirvana would get lumped with all the garbage today, because most people can't tell the difference. It doesn't matter how good it is or would be, people would still put it in the same category as something like Puddle of Mudd or any of that crap. In other words, they have a vague opinion because they can't tell subtle differences. I know it sounds weird, but I used Radiohead as an example, showing that just because someone likes Radiohead, doesn't mean they aren't a dumbass. I always go back to Steve Austin: I'm sure his biggest fan is some loser piece of white trash, who doesn't appreciate why he's as great as he is. Hope you got the point now, I don't know if I explained it well. People can't tell the difference. Basically it.

There are a group of bands who have been somewhat unfairly lumped together, due not even to a similar style or presentation but because the media wanted to create something that really wasn't there. In that group, there are a handful of good bands and a handful of bad ones. It's up to the discerning listener to tell which is which. And, really, Puddle of Mudd probably wouldn't exist had Nirvana not broken that ground a decade ago. Hypothetically, I'd say Nirvana would still stand out due to Cobain being a superior songwriter. There's nothing circulating in the mainstream right now that's as good as what he wrote.

I just can't stand how everyone puts a suicide crybaby like Kurt on the level he's on, Nirvana is very overrated and other then Nevermind they don't have another great album.

Seeing as most people have these song's already, the album seems like a waste.

I never thought I'd see the day a commercial like that is put out for a CD like that for Nirvana. Damn you, damn you all. I'm old now.

Had Cobain done more in the 2nd half of it than screamed the title of the song it would have been cooler. And who the FUCK said that Nirvana only had one good album in Nevermind? There's something called In Utero, I suggest checking it out. It's the greatest CD I own. In every Nirvana argument there's always some poser who says Bleach is their best album, probably to seem like an indie hipster. If you're a Nirvana fan by all means pick up the CD....it has some interesting things on it aside from the new song. About a Girl sounds SHOCKINGLY great here, about 10x better than it does on my Bleach CD. They restored it or something. There's a Sub Pop version of Been a Son, Pennyroyal Tea was remixed and sounds a bit different too. And oddly enough I thought In Bloom sounded better here than on Nevermind. These are token differences I guess but for a Nirvana mark it is still good stuff. Now, what about that rarities CD next year?
