I enjoy the Music Folder here because I love finding out about new obscure bands to listen to...

I am kinda like Rob Gordon from 'High Fidelity'

Cunny shouldn't even be consitered, he barely posts here.

Yea, where's Cunny been lately? I haven't seen him around in ages.

Is that modern country? If so, allow me to say that "Work In Progress" is one of the worst songs I've ever had the displeasure of hearing six times every night when I'm trying to work.

Isn't it Rob Fleming? Or is it different in the movie? You should really read the book, if you haven't. It's pretty much the same thing but with more obscure music references and a lot of British slang.

to me, the fun thing about folders is the arguing. there's no real value in just a bunch of threads that list "who is your favorite _______" and "who is the worst _______" (which pervade both the music and the movies/tv folder), the challenge lies in saying WHY ___ is best or worst and showing that you're right.

Not to me. Why? Because most don't have a reason for liking a specific band other than the old stand by "I like their fucking music". I always got hated on because back at antiMUSIC for not listing about 10 or so reasons why I liked a particular artist. Who the fuck cares? I'm not voting for Governor here folks. Moral sensibility, genre, credibility and attitude mean nothing to me if your music is shit to my ears.

This is like trying to explain to a workrate fanatic why I mark for Sid (it's true). No reason really. I just do.

Gotta say the man's got a good point. I mean look at my taste in movies... I can't really explain why I love the stuff, I just do.

Although there are ways, kinda. For example, you can not like a band because they're just ripping off The Ramones, or something. Not easy to do it the other way, but I guess it can be done too (I like the Beatles, since Oasis is just a rip-off of the Beatles, hence I like Oasis since the Beatles long since broke up ;)).

I once wrote a column explaining why I liked Andrew W.K. Even the most idiotic music can be defended reasonably and logically if you at least tried.

i know it's all ultimately subjective, but i just never saw the point in having a music discussion if all that's said is "i like ___", "oh, well i like ___". there's nothing particularly interesting about a discussion like that. which is i guess one of the reasons you stay away from the folder.

i think i could give a pretty valid argument for film academia about how 'jackass' is the first truly great piece of cinema of the 21st century.

The only country I dont like much is the ooooold stuff. I agree 100% about that Alan Jackson song, just brutal. Most of his stuff is bad.

I feel the same way about the music folder as I do puro. I lurk but don't want to post and be made to feel like:

A. A moron

B. Feel like I am below someone else

C. Get blasted because I don't have any reasons for my likings.

But don't you ever wonder why you like the things you do? Analyzing things like that is healthy and natural, I assure you. For instance, I like bukkake because there's an element of degredation involved, yet the women seem to really enjoy it. That submission to something incredibly disgusting is then made arousing. Throw in the fact that the girls are hot young Asians and it's all good, man.

it's Rob Gordon in the movie....and I haven't gotten around to reading the book...though I will soon....

I will soon...

right now I'm reading "Powder"...the fictional story of a british urchin rock band called The Grams climbing to the top and falling into oblivion...

i've often found that the like or dislike of something is either based on something completely insignificant or is just arbitrary, and the reasoning comes afterwards when you try in vain to figure out why.

Rob--I meant everything I've said about Andrew W.K.

godthedog--You could.

Rant--Unlike the puro folder, we don't attack people with particular tastes in Music. Unless your name is DJ Jeff.

When your CD collection consists of nothing but WWF Music, Weird Al, a few soundtracks, and Barenaked (a birthday gift, it's not all that bad, actually), you tend to avoid the music folder like the Plague.

The fact that I hate pretty much all music on the radio nowadays doesn't help.

may I suggest The Shins or the Green Pajamas (though The GPs are more psychadelia oriented)
