Guest Powerplay Report post Posted October 30, 2002 Note: <> Denotes speech in Japanese *Click* The number was 545-6904, wasn’t it? William Hearford waits at the Northwestern Airlines Terminal at Detroit Metro Airport, holding a cell phone in front of him and dialing a number. He goes back to his wallet, stuck in the back pocket of his grey suit and hat combo, and pulls it out, taking a small card with a phone number on it. 545-6094. Damn, I always mix those two numbers up. He quickly presses the ‘Back’ button on his cell phone, and redials the numbers. He looks around as he presses send, looking at the shuffling crowd and wondering how many people actually realize who he is. Probably none. I look like a business man in this outfit. Hearford pulls on his suit jacket, straightening out a little bit as he listens to the dial tone. “Saichiru Gym? Hello? Is Yoshihiro Saichiru there?............ Okay, I’ll wait……… Yoshihiro! <How are you>?............ <Well, I need to see you>…. <Tonight, if possible>…… <Excellent>!” Hearford gives a jovial laugh at this, very out of the normal stereotype of Judge Mental. “<I will see you, then. Bye, Yoshihiro.>” With that, he shuts off the cell phone and begins to walk out, passing the imitation English pub that he was recruited in, and gives a small smile as he thinks back to how far he has come in such a short while. He walks out to the pickup area outside, and calls over a yellow cab. * * * * The cab pulls up onto a decent looking stone building, parking on the side of a major thoroughfare. “$20.33, pops.” The cab driver points to the metal slot at the divider, and Mental gives him $25 bucks. “Have a nice one.” He says as the old veteran steps out of the cab with his bags and onto the sidewalk. The cab drives off into the thick traffic of Woodward Boulevard, and Mental is left alone on the concrete staring at the sign: “Saichiru Gym”. Grabbing his baggage, he steps into through the doors and into the building. …… Hearford watches on as the challenger comes down the aisle and the crowd gives him a few cheers, thought nothing like Will had gotten when he had entered as the man. He’s a decent sized Japanese man, maybe 6 foot, and his skin tanned and his face scrunched up. His hair is black, cut and cropped well, matching his professional look and demeanor. He walks down the aisle, slapping a few of the fans hands along the way as the announcer gives his name. “Approaching the ring…… weighing in at 216 pounds and hailing from Yokohama, Japan…… The Rising Son of Victory…… Yoshihiro Saichiru!” The man enters the ring to another minor pop, and acknowledges the crowd with a raised hand, and Will and he meet in the middle of the ring for a simple handshake… “William-san!” yells an older Japanese man, coming over quickly to Hearford and bows. Hearford returns the bow and gives a nostalgic smile. “Yoshihiro-san! It has certainly been a long time hasn’t it? You own your own gym now!” The taller American says, scratching his neatly-trimmed gray beard as he surveys some of the grapplers in training. Yoshihiro nods, pointing out one in particular. “Yes, yes. I have a real talent over here. He’s the most naturally skilled wrestler since I met you.” …Yoshihiro and Hearford hear the bell ring, and begin circling each other in the traditional grappler stance. They circle round the ring once, keeping a careful eye on each other as they try to pick the perfect moment to strike. As if on cue, Will and Saichiru both dash forward and Will tries to get into a tie up. In a lightning swift move, Yoshihiro grabs one of the younger man’s arms and sidesteps the grapple, and begins to pull Will’s arm back in a Hammerlock… The old Judge smiles, remembering back to better times, and Yoshihiro brings him over to the young man. He looks like he is no older than 19, but Yoshihiro proudly informs his former compatriot that the young man is 24. “A pleasure to meet you, sir.” Says the young man, giving a small bow to the former champion, and Mental returns the favor. “Well,” says Yoshihiro, patting the young Asian American on the back, “This is man is William Hearford III, if that name means anything to you, <student>. He and I really had some great matches back when you were just a kid.” Yoshihiro motions an open hand to Mr. Hearford, and Hearford gives a nice smile… …Will turns around in an instant, stopping Saichiru from locking in the Hammerlock. He holds onto Yoshihiro’s wrist and wrenches the arm, forcing Saichiru to bend forward to stop the Hearford from torquing the arm any more. The crowd gives a few cheers as Will gives them a wave and plays to them a bit, but his manager begins yelling at him. “WILL! PAY ATTENTION! PUT HIM ON THE GROUND BEFORE-” But Alley can’t complete his warning as Yoshihiro rolls on the ground and does a hand stand flip, wrenching Hearford’s arm and taking control of the hold. The crowd cheers even more for the excellent reversal, and Yoshihiro pivots on his left foot, knocking Will to the ground with a roundhouse kick to the back of the head. Alley screams at Will for showboating as Hearford pushes off the ground and shakes his head a little: This is going to be much harder than he originally thought… “Well, William-san, would you like to see him in action?” Ask the proud old wrestler, and Hearford nods. Immediately the young man shoots up and into the closest of the three rings in the gym, and Yoshihiro calls over one of the more advanced students to get in the ring as well. “The other one has been here for 3 years. A good student, but this boy has only been here a few months and he’s up to his level.” The two go to opposite corners, and Yoshihiro walks over to the bell and pulls a string, ringing it loudly three times. Both men begin to go out and immediately get in a tie up. The older one, having a couple inches and about 20 pounds on the rookie, takes the advantage and begins to push the prodigy back. He pushes harder, trying to assert his dominance, but the young man quickly lets go of the hold, dropping down and… …Scissoring his feet for a drop toe hold! Will clutches his face and he begins to get up, but Yoshihiro kips up quickly and begins running at the ropes. He bounces off the ropes and comes back as Will reaches his feet and leaps into the air kicking his foot out for Gamengiri… that Will catches! He begins to try and flip Yoshihiro over but Saichiru quickly brings his other foot around for an improvised Enzuigiri! Will falls back clutching his head, and Yoshihiro quickly kips up again, and immediately dashes at the downed rookie, trying to lock in a… … “Gokuraku-gatame. <Very nice, Yoshihiro. You’ve taught him well. That was one of your favorites…> Says Hearford, with a nice smile. The young man pulls back hard, and the older student tries to maneuver himself towards the ropes. He begins reaching for them, which are only inches away, and reaches hard…. … And Saichiru grabs the ropes, and the ref begins the five-count for Will to break off the Full Nelson STF! Will tries to torque the neck and the leg of the Japanese man, and the crowd watches in anticipation as Will struggles to end the match and Yoshihiro struggles to stay in it! ONE! Will pushes down hard on the neck of Yoshihiro, trying to get him to tap… TWO! Saichiru bits his lip as he keeps his hand on the top rope, trying to not submit to the pain of his neck and leg combined… THREE! The crowd watches, almost dead silent as the two men are locked on the ground… FOUR! The ref looks at Will, asking if he’ll break the hold… FIVE! “<Yuji! Break the hold!>” Shouts Yoshihiro as the young man instantly lets go and pulls the older student towards the middle of the ring, pulling him to his feet. “<He’s very talented, that for sure.>” Comments Hearford, watching as the learner does a lightning fast spinning heel kick to the back of the larger student’s neck. The student hits the ground and the prodigy follows, getting on all fours and giving him vicious knees that would make Yuji Nagata proud. The older student tries to defend himself, but the vicious knees still come and come, and the young man goes in for the kill. He quickly gets up and pulls the shell-shocked student to his back and pulls him to a sitting position and… …puts a single arm armbar on Hearford. Before Will can do anything Yoshihiro puts a dragon sleeper hold on with the other arm and puts his leg around the body and begins using it for leverage, twisting the head away from the arm in the armbar. Hearford bellows his pain, reaching for the ropes and trying to move, but the submission is locked on far too well. He looks at Alley with pleading eyes, but all Alley can do is shake his head and throw his towel on the ground. Saichiru torques the hold even more, trying to get him out when… TAP TAP TAP! “<You taught him the stretch plum already?” William-san asks, and Yoshihiro-san nods. “<Yes. Even I was amazed he was ready for it.”> He calls out for the boy to stop the hold, which he does, and the experienced student falls to the mat gasping for air and holding his neck and shoulder. “I haven’t used that move in a long time….” Says Hearford, cutting back into English, and Yoshihiro looks at him. “Well, old friend, what do you need?” Asks Saichiru as the young student helps…… …Will to his feet, draping one of the young man’s arms around his shoulder. He laughs and smiles a bit, and speaks to him in some broken English. “You fight well. Better one not had. Practice we maybe sometime?” Will looks at him, incredibly tired and totally beat from the match. “Yeah…” He pants out. “Sure. One of these days.” Alley comes over through the ropes and takes Will off his hands, and but Hearford goes to the turnbuckle and rests for a moment. Yoshihiro does a quick bow and walks off with his manager to the cheering crowd. Will looks over at Alley and says… “I need some help.” He says, still looking at the young student carry the other out. “I’m fighting a man who has using some martial arts techniques, and I was wondering if you had anyone on hand that I could spar with?” Hearford looks down at the Japanese man, who puts his hand to his chin and thinks for a moment. “I do have couple. No one that will give you a massive challenge, but they would definitely get you used to the style.” Hearford nods at him. “Whatever you have on hand will be fine. If they trained under you, I’m sure I’ll get a work out.” Saichiru gives a smile as they each give a small hug. “Come over to my house. I have some tapes of the man during a few of his most recent work outs. Meet me at my house tonight. We can do some catching up.” He says patting one of his oldest friends on the back. “That would be excellent, William-san.” He gives a bow, and Hearford returns it quickly. With that, William Hearford picks up his bags and goes to find a cab to take him back home. ____________________________________________________________ Also, please look at my profile in the stats page.
