Guest Danny Posted November 2, 2002 Report Posted November 2, 2002 What band do you think is/was better, Nirvana or Pearl Jam. I say Nirvana cause they did their own thing and created grunge.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted November 2, 2002 Report Posted November 2, 2002 Nirvana. Eddie Vedder's voice irritates me greatly.
Guest red_file Posted November 2, 2002 Report Posted November 2, 2002 Did they create grunge or did they merely popularize it? Or we could even ponder whether grunge is/was a style, a period, an aesthetic, a mood, or even a fashion. Depending on how you desire to define it, you could stretch grunge back to Neil Young or merely have it limited to a few albums. As for the question, I like isolated songs from both bands and feel that as a whole they produced weak albums. Pearl Jam seemed to have a better grasp of melody and how to put a song together to make it sound appealing (read: mainstream, if you like), while Nirvana seemed to have a better unifying aesthetic to their work that made it appear as though they were always true to their sound. Hard to judge which is better. Outside of "Drain You," I can't think of a single Nirvana song that I would want to listen to no; there are maybe three or four Peral Jam songs have a faint desire to listen to, and a few more that I wouldn't turn the dial if I heard them on the radio. So, I guess, Pearl Jam.
Guest Anorak Posted November 2, 2002 Report Posted November 2, 2002 I always preferred Soundgarden myself. I would go with Nirvana otherwise.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted November 2, 2002 Report Posted November 2, 2002 Oh, if we're bringing other bands into this, then Alice in Chains owns them both.
Guest Respect The 'Taker Posted November 2, 2002 Report Posted November 2, 2002 What's wrong with some of you people? The question was WHICH BAND DO YOU PREFER - NIRVANA OR PEARL JAM not "Please give us your opinion on who YOU think is better than both of them". I've had my say... Pearlers rules Nirvana, Ten blows anything released by Nirvana away Guns N' Illusions
Guest DrainYou42 Posted November 2, 2002 Report Posted November 2, 2002 Nirvana (who didn't create Grunge by the way)
Guest Banky Posted November 2, 2002 Report Posted November 2, 2002 Nirvana Its over, this shouldn't even be a contest.
Guest HollywoodSpikeJenkins Posted November 2, 2002 Report Posted November 2, 2002 Pearl Jam...pfft. Nirvana.
Guest Lord of The Curry Posted November 2, 2002 Report Posted November 2, 2002 Nirvana by a motherfuckin country mile......
Guest godthedog Posted November 2, 2002 Report Posted November 2, 2002 Nirvana. Eddie Vedder's voice irritates me greatly. how the hell does that work? you prefer guttural screaming & out of tune mumbling to vocals that have, you know, melody? i personally prefer pearl jam. the vocals are better, all the instruments are better, & the songs are better-written.
Guest Insanityman Posted November 2, 2002 Report Posted November 2, 2002 Pearl Jam did have better music, that said... Nirvana.
Guest redbaron51 Posted November 2, 2002 Report Posted November 2, 2002 Plus Pearl Jam had talent, unlike Nirvana.
Guest kkktookmybabyaway Posted November 2, 2002 Report Posted November 2, 2002 Nirvana Current total: Nir: 8 PJ: 8
Guest cabbageboy Posted November 2, 2002 Report Posted November 2, 2002 I'll break it: Nirvana and it's not close. Pearl Jam basically has one album full of decent material (first half of Ten, first half of Vs.). Once you get to utter garbage like Vitalogy, they had lost it totally. I notice that Pearl Jam hasn't had any sort of major hit album since Vitalogy, that's how shitty that CD was....I know it turned me off them for life. And yes, Vedder's vocals date badly....what used to sound intense 10 years ago now sounds kinda campy and brings on unintended laughs. Meanwhile, Cobain's vocals which no one liked much at the time hold up shockingly well with time. He could scream, mumble, sing if he HAD to, even affect a British accent. Think of it this way. Nirvana just had a greatest hits CD released and it didn't remotely touch all of their good songs. If Pearl Jam had a greatest hits what would be on it? From Ten: Jeremy, Evenflow, Alive. Vs. might have a couple of things like Daughter and Animal (neither of which are really anything special), and maybe from Vitalogy you could have Better Man and Corduroy (the only listenable songs on that piece of shit CD). From there I can't think of much else for Pearl Jam that I like.
Guest MillenniumMan831 Posted November 3, 2002 Report Posted November 3, 2002 Sorry, but I gotta tie it back up: Pearl Jam. Other than Come as You Are, I can't get into anything Nirvana does. I really like Jeremy plus PJ's music tends to create moods rather than noise.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted November 3, 2002 Report Posted November 3, 2002 Nirvana. Eddie Vedder's voice irritates me greatly. how the hell does that work? you prefer guttural screaming & out of tune mumbling to vocals that have, you know, melody? Guttural growling, and it is in fact in tune with the music. Besides, there's no way a melodic singer could do that style of music, and still have it sound right. To answer your question: Exactly, I prefer screams and growls to melodic vocals, which is why I prefer Nirvana (who I enjoy marginally) to Pearl Jam (who I utterly detest).
Guest Spaceman Spiff Posted November 3, 2002 Report Posted November 3, 2002 I love Nirvana. But I love Pearl Jam even more.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted November 3, 2002 Report Posted November 3, 2002 Eddie Vedder reminds me of a white Hootie.
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Posted November 3, 2002 Report Posted November 3, 2002 Nirvana. Nirvana has a palpable tension in the music that Pearl Jam lacks. A sort of earnestness and raw emotion, I suppose, that I don't pick up in Pearl Jam's work. To distill it down even further: if my copy of Ten got snapped in half, I'd say "Oh well." If that happened to In Utero, I'd have a lousy day. Now if you any of you come around and start breaking my CDs, you die.
Guest godthedog Posted November 3, 2002 Report Posted November 3, 2002 emotion seeps through pearl jam's work. there's real raw energy to spare in tracks like 'betterman', 'hail hail', 'alive' (which was based on vedder's life), 'black', 'indifference', etc.
Guest Respect The 'Taker Posted November 3, 2002 Report Posted November 3, 2002 Plus Pearl Jam had talent, unlike Nirvana. We have ourselves a naive, uneducated moron, kids! And lucky us, he's here all week. Sarcastic Illusions
Guest redbaron51 Posted November 3, 2002 Report Posted November 3, 2002 Cobain couldn't sing a note if he sold his soul to satan, and his guitar playing wasn't much better. His lyrics aren't special, and if you look at it, its just teen angst 13 years ago, just different times. And besides Vitalogy is a tremendous album, next behind Ten, but since it wasn't popular, because it was actually a great album, not a trendy rock-pop album like most Nirvana's albums, it was good. So Pearl Jam isn't "mainstream" does that make them a shitty band then? Yield is also a good album, and I can't wait for their new album to come out as well. A greatest hits album would be excellent.
Guest redbaron51 Posted November 3, 2002 Report Posted November 3, 2002 Plus Pearl Jam had talent, unlike Nirvana. We have ourselves a naive, uneducated moron, kids! And lucky us, he's here all week. Sarcastic Illusions moron? um no. you can actually tell what band has talent and what doesn't, and Pearl Jam is far a talented band then Nirvana, which couldn't save themselves from a good live show "not unplugged"
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted November 3, 2002 Report Posted November 3, 2002 Personally, I think Pearl Jam are better musicians, but Nirvana were the better songwriters. I like Cobain's vocals much more than Vedder's, though, as stated earlier. There just seems to be more energy in Nirvana's work.
